Because the film came out at the end of the year, it really got lost in the holiday shuffle of films and although universally praised, Val didn't even get a nomination. That year at the Oscars, Val's competition (for best supporting actor) would have been: 1. Tommy Lee Jones for The Fugitive (he won) 2. Leonardo DiCaprio for What's Eating Gilbert Grape 3. Ralph Fiennes for Schindler's List 4. John Malkovich for In the Line of Fire (excellent film btw) 5. Pete Postlethwaite for In the Name of the Father While that is some tough competition, I believe had he been nominated, Val Kilmer would have won.
@@JohnnyBNerdy thats some really tough competition tho, hell, as much as I love Tommy Lee Jones in the fugitive I don't think he shoudlve won, even with Val Kilmer in the list, I wouldve given it to Peter Postlehwaite. But Val Kilmer's Doc Holliday performance is definitely above Tommy Lee Jones in the fugitive
I know this scene gets overlooked compared to the many other scenes in this movie but this scene establishes all we need to know about Wyatt Earp for this movie. He's a man of action who prefers to get shit done himself when something needs doing with enough experience to know when he's dealing with cowardly bullshitters like Johnny Tyler. Not only that but this scene establishes that Wyatt has a reputation and that reputation carries weight as we are reminded of throughout the rest of the movie. When Doc Holiday says Wyatt's name in front of Tyler he looks surprised and a little in awe about the man he was about to shoot. Like he couldn't believe he was in this man's presence. Then when Wyatt tells him to leave the shotgun he does so without a complaint and is never seen again. So his word carries weight too and should be heeded. It's a hell of a introduction and small glimpse into Wyatt's character.
I don't know if this scene really happened, but it could have. Before this, the real Wiatt Earp worked in Kansas as a bar bouncer, so he could definitely handle himself physically.
"I'm your huckleberry." - This quote represents my unwavering confidence and willingness to take on any challenge or confrontation. I see myself as the perfect match for anyone who dares to oppose me. "Why, Johnny Ringo, you look like somebody just walked over your grave." - With this statement, I am taunting Johnny Ringo, implying that he appears fearful and defeated. I revel in the psychological warfare of the moment, using my words to undermine and intimidate my opponent. "I have not yet begun to defile myself." - This quote showcases my rebellious and unapologetic nature. I refuse to conform to societal norms or expectations. I believe that true freedom comes from embracing one's own desires and indulging in life's pleasures. "You're a daisy if you do." - This remark is delivered with a mix of sarcasm and superiority. It suggests that the other person's actions or choices will ultimately lead to their downfall or demise. I find amusement in pointing out their potential mistakes or missteps. "I'm in my prime." - With this statement, I assert my self-assuredness and belief in my own abilities. I see myself as being at the height of my power and influence, ready to face any challenge or obstacle that comes my way. "I'll be damned." - This phrase reflects a sense of resignation or acceptance in the face of difficult circumstances. It conveys a recognition that sometimes life deals us unfavorable cards, but I am determined to face adversity head-on. "It seems poker's not your game, Ike. I know, let's have a spelling contest." - This quote reveals my sharp wit and enjoyment of banter. I use it to mock Ike, suggesting that his incompetence in poker renders him unfit for any intellectual challenge, offering a spelling contest as a sarcastic alternative. "It appears my hypocrisy knows no bounds." - This statement reflects my self-awareness of my own contradictions and inconsistencies. It acknowledges that I may preach one thing but act in a way that contradicts those principles, indicating a certain level of moral ambiguity. "You know, Ed, if I thought you weren't my friend, I just don't think I could bear it." - This quote reveals a vulnerable side to my character. Despite my rough exterior, I value friendship and loyalty. It expresses the significance of companionship and the emotional impact it has on me. "There's no normal life, Wyatt, it's just life. Get on with it." - This quote embodies my philosophy of embracing life as it comes, without seeking or expecting a conventional sense of normalcy. It encourages living in the present moment and embracing the unpredictability of existence
I had a hard time telling that was billy Bob Thornton when I first saw it too, since he's not usually that chubby. But he has that distinctive voice that you can't miss. And I KNOW that was a humiliating scene to play being Johnny Tyler, but he played it to PERFECTION!
Yep, Billy Bob was pretty chubby when he was first starting out in Hollywood in the late 80s and early 90s. He slimmed down a bit for his breakout movie Sling Blade in 1996 and lost more weight since then.

Yea. But in real life they didn't like each other. Wyatt Earp's relative in real life like his great grandson is one of the cowboys. The one doc shoots last between the eyes in the OK gunfight
"He cannot stand up for himself" ... well, ya. When it's Wyatt ... it's not just the name. It's the ... presence ... confidence ... eyes ... Wyatt did more pistol whipping than shooting. Like when Josie Wales confronted 4 armed soldiers and they instantly feared Josie.
*"First of all, you don't slap a man. Ok. I mean, even when slapping was fashionable, ya know, they did it in Paris, some guy would come up, ""I challenge you to a duel."" They would have a gunfight after that, somebody had to go!"* ~Charlie Murphy on Rick James slapping him
guy was just bitch slapped at a poker table, his pistol taken away, thrown out by his ear, then leaves his rifle on the ground and says thank you as he walks away.
Rewatching this, realizing on my kazillioneth viewing, something extraordinary just popped out at me. Two things: Wyatt had the might of all his brothers in the town street so he rollin' like five deep with his crew yet this MF living legend walks into the bar by himself to access the situation. Once he gets the immediate particulars and reads the room instantly, Earp doesn't even consider going out getting backup, but instead, without hesitation, and cool as a cucumber, makes a beeline right for the threat, total lone wolf, one man wrecking crew. He goes into the hornet's nest one against four, I count. Yet he already deduced once he neutralizes the Queen Bee leader, the other three will vaporize and disappear like the followers they are. And he makes quick work of the so-called, pysdo-Alpha dog in under 60 seconds lickidy-split, throwing him out onto the street like trash litter where his brothers be still loitering without a glimmer of worry in any of their Woolymanath impressive sized mustached faces. This wasn't any pre-conceived notion on their part, but, in their minds, foregone conclusion. This scene establishes our main man Wyatt as a natural born leader, take charge, do it himself kind of guy and just general all around certified bad-ass. Kurt Russell freakin' owns this scene. This is his hero establishing time to shine and Kurt is incapable of a false moment. He's The Goat. So, what actor in their right mind would be crazy enough to want to follow that tour de force flex by a master class performer who just threw down an instant sizzle reel career highlight execution of character and full on peacock display of his sheer indomitable majesty of self to the world and cinema time capsule? What insane actor of misguided bravado would want to try and follow THAT? What lunatic screenwriter tried to introduce an even greater bad ass protagonist immediately after in the very following continuous scene? That's two craftsmen surely living in a fool's paradise. Then Val Kilmer officially enters the Tombstone verse and without breaking a sweat or looking in any way ruffled, effortlessly establishes his screen presence dominance in one of cinema's most charismatic, awe-inspiring, hypnotic big screen performances ever put to celluloid. Christ. Russell just gangsta slapped Billy Bob once, twice, three times not a lady, but like a lil' bitch bringing down the thunder and here comes Val as smooth as butter and just as seductive as Doc to effortlessly up the ante from Kurt who just turned in a greatest hits highlight reel of his own just two minutes of screen time earlier. That should have been Mission Inconceivable to the Nth Degree, a thespian suicide mission kamikaze run, a fool's errand to attempt to outshine that and yet, Kilmer is The Goat in a movie of only just top to bottom, head to toe, soup to nuts nothing, but a MF stable full of Goats. That tells you the level of talent on display in this film and everybody on their A game at the absolute peak of their powers. Great actors seem to inspire even greater heights of goosebump inducing performance from their already impressive loaded for bare arsenal of endless acting bells and whistles they have at their disposal. Yeah. This is my love letter to a brilliant piece of cinema that when it achieves this kinda level of illumination and true greatness, really transcends its medium and just becomes a minor miracle in the realm of escapist entertainment and the arts. Thanks Wyatt, thanks Earp boys and thanks Doc, for being our huckleberry....

Well one day weeks later I was with my girlfriend inside her dads house and I looked out the window and he was out there talking to her brother who lived next door. I never said anything I just walked outside and walked right up to him and open handed pimp slapped him as hard as I could. He fell back against a tree in the yard and I said. ok, here I am so say something to me now punk boy!! Funny thing is he said he didn't have any problem with me and I never heard him say another word to me ever as I rode by.
