As a Costarican, I got to experience the volcano 🌋 when it was very active and not yet a National Park. Some friends and I thought it would be cool to climb a bit on the side of it. When we had climbed maybe a third of the way; we heard a huge explosion. I remember seeing a smoking boulder flying way over our heads and quite a few more boulders rolling down, close to the top. We scrambled to cover ourselves from the rolling rocks, as we heard them coming down. Thankfully, they didn't reach us. We were very quick in getting back down to the base of the volcano.
The other interesting thing was the lava fields at the base, you could hear rocks being pushed out of the ground, it sounded like porcelain falling on rocks.

I see, good to know. The water wasn't that hot and it was crowded so I wasn't compelled to stick around for long, plus it was getting a bit late. Next time I'll have to explore a bit further. By the way you get a mention in one of my videos, not the next one but the one after that, when I go to Brasilito beach.

Hi Gabrial, around 2002 myself and two friends turned uo la Fortuna. my friends wanted to stay at the bar, but i pursueded them to go and see the Volcano in the evening. As we a rrived in the dark moulton laava was runniing down around the volcano. People had been camping for 6 weeks to see this specticle. We also went in the cheap hot springs, complete with frogs. We were on a budget. great memories.

A volcano is a spooky place to live near. Before I moved to the Philippines I read about the big Taal Volcano destruction ,it was insane what it destroyed. It was the same volcano that erupted a year or so ago. That would take a long time for that shock to subside for the locals.

If you haven't, I also would consider visiting the Poás and Irazú volcanoes. Contrary to Arenal, there is a good climb to them and you get to see their craters, weather allowing.
Can't speak for Turrialba Volcano as I've never been there; or to the Miravalles one (which is nearby-ish to Arenal) as I've only been to its skirts back in 2000, and it was getting dark (we got close to the geothermal plant, though).
