  • Hi everyone! Today I'm sharing a non-spoiler review / 'should you read' video for standalone historical fantasy novel Tigana by Guy Gavriel Kay. GGK has been one of my favourite and auto-buy authors since I was a young teen and I had the chance to reread Tigana recently. This literary historical fantasy is a deep emotional dive into memory, of holding onto the past, of pride in your home, and the pitfalls of all these things. More thematic than character or plot heavy, this book will still have you weeping for the deaths of minor characters and hanging on to every word of the quieter moments. Have you read Tigana or another book by GGK? Let me know in the comments.

Do you have an "ask me anything" question for when I hit 500subs? Put it here :)

Congratulations on passing 500+ subs Kristen! What a lovely and well balanced review. I'm listening to Tigana (...narrated by Simon Vance) as we speak. Usually I can go out and exercise while I listen to books, but this one is definitely a book I have to pay attention to while listening. I need to sit down and focus other wise I won't know who's talking to who and lose the crux of the scene. But that's good because I really love Kay's writing style. The words seems to flow like water in a stream. Keep up the great work!

Kay has that way of snatching up your emotions and running with them. Sometimes there are tears. What an author!

It's one of my favorite stand-alone fantasy novels. Heartbreaking and beautiful.

Thanks for the very good, very well thought-out review. I read Tigana many years ago when it first came out, and loved it immediately. I think it may be my favorite Kay book . . . admittedly I haven't read any of his since the first Sarantium novel. But I agree with your assessment of this book completely. It is thematic. The sex scenes are awkward. The payoff is astonishingly good. The characters sneak up on you and you end up caring deeply about them. The biggest challenge (I won't call it a criticism because I think it is intentional and artful) to Kay's work is that he doesn't write from one perspective and he doesn't write easy, happy endings. He almost always breaks your heart. And as you mentioned, the hopping from character to character means that it takes a serious commitment to pay attention in order to get over the hump . . . to the place where the story grabs you. I think the reason I stopped reading Kay's novels a while back (although I've recently started catching up) is that I couldn't really handle having my emotions ripped out and muddled about with so much. I think having children made me more sensitive to these bittersweet stories. Now that my kids are largely grown, I seem better able to get back into Kay and his wrenching take on historical fantasy.
Thank you again for the review, and know that it has encouraged me to continue my GGK exploration. (I'm re-reading Sailing to Sarantium and will finally read Lord of Emperors. Then, I think, the Croatian series.)

I have stared this book 3x already on audio and even though Simon Vance is one of my all-time favourite narrators, I haven't been able to continue on past the 10% mark yet. Nothing to do with the book, my mood has just never been 'right' yet. Hearing your thoughts has made me excited for it again though! I will try to get to it sooner rather than later and share my thoughts with you ;)
    Thanks for your great review!!

That's fair, it's a pretty slow set-up. Interested to see what you think?

This review has been really helpful and I think it's given me a much better shot at actually finishing the book this time. (This is my third time starting Tigana)

Not my favourite from GGK, but very good. I think The Lions of Al-Rassan is his best, but have more than a few on my TBR to get to. Maybe one of those will take top spot some day. Be well, stay safe!

Same! A Song for Arbonne and Lions of Al-Rassan are my favourites and I've read them both a bunch of times. This was my first reread of Tigana since I first read it as a teen.

The Sarantine Mosaic is his magnum opus.

I love it! Tigana isn't my favourite GGK by far. I'm filming a where to start with Kay video and the Sarantine Mosaic will definitely be on there

Congrats on reaching over 500 subs! This sounds like a very interesting historical fantasy. It sounds well-researched, and like the politics of the historical era affect the actual fantasy elements. (I guess that would make sense in a book that has themes that mainly revolve around memory)

Kay is the master of swirling a little fantasy into his insanely well-developed historical settings, no one does it quite like him

This was a great video. It’s beneficial for me to know if there is a book I’m interested in that has a slower plot before I go into it. It will def mentally prepare me to be patient when I try it out.

Always love a review that knows that there are different audiences with different tastes! Could not agree more about Brandin, even the horrors done by Alberico are given such depth in knowing his almost "banality of evil" motivation. Tigana is easily GGK's best World Building, and I have just started a video series about the historic connections of the mythology of “Tigana”, with the first video being about the Triad of the Palm! ua-cam.com/video/hgwv78lBAzo/v-deo.html Hope to put up part 2 and 3 soon, as well as versions with audio in the near future.
