There is absolutely no one else than Sills for this role.
You may be overlooking it, but Norman Trigle, who played Giulio Cesare, is also an excellent singer.
In her memoirs, Sills said that she loved the Colon and the Argentine public. She did NOT care for Richter at all, and lost the opportunity to record with Deutsche Grammophon because of her refusal to work with him again. The voices and orchestra here sound marvelous, whatever the backstage disagreements.
What a wonderful singer Sills was at this point in her career. Also Forrester is superb. Treigle very fine.
Bravo. This was Norman Treigle’s only appearances in Buenos Aires, and was the first time the masterpiece was produced in Argentina.

Yes.....I was familiar with that as well!! How blessed I am to be from Boston, and to have heard Sills' performances in person (though not of this opera, unfortunately).

This is an incredible performance. I have had for many years a CD, only one, with mainly Beverly Sills`arias, I did not know there was a complete recording. Sills is even better that in her commercial recording. Just listen her rendition of "Per pieta ...". The Argentiean Tito Capobianco, who worked with Sills in New York encouraged her to perform in the Colón. In 1970 she returned for Manon, with Gedda, and in 1972 for Lucia, with Kraus. Golden years ...
I had in Italia a CD of the complete Sills/Kraus Lucia at the Colon!
