Ultralight Fishing With The SHIMANO SENSILITE [First Impressions]

  • The Shimano Sensilite only costs $50 so it is yet another budget-friendly ultralight rod option. But how does it perform? Well, I took this rod out to do some testing, and overall, I am very impressed. That said, it has specific things it does really well, so it may or may not be good for your style of fishing.
    This rod is very fast action so I found that it is a great option for ultralight jig anglers (especially if you like Sunfish & Bass). Due to how fast it is, I probably wouldn't pick it up if you plan to fish a lot of treble-hooked baits or pursue fish with softer mouths. Anyway, I loved this rod personally because I always enjoy a fast ultralight rod. I also really like the way it is designed aesthetically. It is very comfortable to fish with and it balanced well with my Daiwa Revros LT 1000. I have also picked up the 6' Light action rod and that feels equally as comfortable. I would be very curious how the 6'6 feels - I bet that is a stellar rod.

    I started to buy the Sensilite before I bought my defy silver. I wanted the 6 1/2 ft version and they were sold out. That's one of the reasons why I got the defy silver. That and your review on ithe silver sold me. I bought it in ultra light and light action in 6 1/2 ft. Both versions of those rods are great. 👊👍

      Honestly I think I might actually prefer the Defy Silver a little bit. It is just a bit more versatile with the way the blank loads up. Both are awesome options so I don't think you can go wrong with either.

    I have the 6’ Light and the 6’6” Ultralight in this rod and they are both awesome. Had them for over a year and have lost count on how panfish I have caught on both of them. Super light, very sensitive and a workhorse rod. Caught numerous 2lbs+ bass as well on both rods and even a couple eater walleyes on the 6’ Light. You won’t be disappointed in purchasing one of these

    Miller Lite. Wow. I am old enough to remember their original "Tastes great, less filing" ad campaigns from back in the day. Some true laugh-out-loud commercials, especially the ones with Bob Uecker. "I must be in the front rowwww.." So funny watching you switch hands with that spinner. Still loving my Defy Silver, but it sounds like the Sensilite is a great rod for the money. Thanks Ethan!

      How do you reel? For spinning rods I reel with my right, for fly fishing I cast with my right ,and strip with my left

    • @oldeschoolbob1022
      @oldeschoolbob1022 2 роки тому +2

      @@JohnJames. I cast with my right and reel with my left - for fly, spinning and baitcasting. This is the "normal" way for a right-hander to use spin and fly, but actually backwards from what most right-handers do for baitcasting. They cast with their right hand, then switch the rod to their left hand and reel with their right hand. I mainly spin-fish, so the left-hand reel is more natural for me. Ethan is one of the few that I recall seeing who casts a spinner with their right hand, and then switches the rod to their left hand, and reels with their right. I have also seen him do it the more conventional way. I think the bottom line is: do what's comfortable and works for you. Good luck!

    • @tasuk3ru
      @tasuk3ru 2 роки тому +2

      @@awageam the sensilite is a Light and the 13 Defy is an Ultra Light so I can say much to compare them thoroughly, but the Sensilite seems more like a Medium. I got a Phenix Feather 6’9 and it’s more of a Light. With that being said I like em both if it came down to it though I’d say the 13 Defy would be my overall go to rod.

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything  2 роки тому +2

      The Sensilite is definitely a stouter feeling rod. It is still an ultralight however much more beefy than you'd expect (still lightweight). The 13 Fishing Defy Silver is also a nice fast action just not as stout. I think I like the 13 just a little more overall but they are both fantastic options for $50. Both are great UL jig rods. I think the 13 just gives anglers a bit more versatility.

    The industry term is call rod torque, when you say balancing. it closely related to how you feel the weight of the rod. You probably can't feel the difference between a 80g rod and 120g rod, but the balancing spells it out. You should try the 13fishing defy sliver 7ft UL. It is amazing for moving lure.

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything  2 роки тому

      I have loved my Defy Silver 5'6 but I may need to try a longer model! Thanks Sherman - I am not always familiar with all the terminology.
      And I agree I can't notice differences in slight weight changes. That is why having the right balance with a reel is more important to me than the lightest weight rod I can find.

    The lake I normally go to is like that, just tons of fish and they're pretty easy to catch. It's turned into a problem though, the bass are really stunted, they max out at about 15 inches and they're all skinny. Same goes for some of the other fish. A lot of the sunfish are fine though, 7-9 inch bluegill are normal, and 14 inch redear sunfish are in there. Really fat too. Bullhead catfish get pretty large there.

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything  2 роки тому +1

      I personally like all Daiwa and Shimano size 1000 reels. If you want something that will hold up to some abuse and some dunks in the water, I would suggest some of the higher priced models which have higher quality components that shouldn't get ruined from a little water. Typically, the cheaper reels have a hard time getting dunked because of the low quality parts. Additionally, after taking a dunk, make sure to clean the reel and add grease/oil to ensure it works right.

    What 50$ish rod would you say is good for those mini crank baits with the treble hooks like you used in the video? I have a small crank bait that I got like the snap bean, but only have a Ugly Stik GX2 6'6'' medium power moderate fast action with 10lbs mono line. I can't cast the crankbait very far and I'm also interested in a lighter rod.

      I would look into the Fenwick Eagle if you can get a decent deal. Otherwise an Okuma Celilo should work fine - the shorter models are a bit better in my opinion. The 6'6 and above get a bit too whippy.

    I have been debating buying the sensilite rods for a while. Thanks for the video. Do you find a type of line to cast better for ultralight lures in windy conditions? Do you prefer Mono,fluoro,braid? I seem to have issues with light braid in wind

    I’m looking at building a lightweight spinning combo specifically for creek hopping and wanted your input. I saw 13 fishing has a 4’6” medium light, which isn’t as finesse as I want for small fish, but it’s short enough to cast in thick cover. I’m worried about going full on ultralight because I’ve caught 3-5lb bass and catfish out of some of these creeks. I don’t want to miss my opportunity at fish that size by carrying too small of a set up

    • @FishAnything
      @FishAnything  2 роки тому

      If you’re consistently catching 3-5lb bass I think a ML is a better option than an ultralight. You don’t want to wear down the bass so much that you exhaust them. The ML will allow you to keep them coming in a bit better.

      It’ll still work but I’d probably recommend some mono to use with it. It’s a very fast rod so that stout blank may not be a perfect fit for the softer mouths they have. The mono should help cushion that with the stretch. You’ll be fine!

      I would probably avoid this rod for rooster tails due to the super fast action. I think the Temple Fork or maybe an Okuma Celilo (for a lower price) would be better suited for that style of fishing.
