Dear God!!! What a bass - a REAL bass...not woofy...not trying to force some dark, fat, woof up into the top of his voice...just free and easy and rich and... GORGEOUS!!! Thanks for uploading!!!

Che bellissima voce! I am amazed at how VERY little known this great basso is in the USA.Most of the opera fans I know here don't know him at all.Maybe he rarelyleftt Italy to perform.Whatever the case,he should be afforded more recognition. And I agree with sospello, its great to see him finally without a beard ! Bravo Clabassi e mille grazie for sharing this with us.

A wonderful Basso voice which the 6ft 4 inch Plinio Clabassi controlled and delivered with such majestic ease. We are proud of this Friulano, born in my town of Sedegliano. He toured Australia in 1948. Bravissimo !

How exquisite! the music, the moment, Clabassi's acting. This is 'total opera'. The villagers too are just superb---specific, authentic, individual.
What a fabulous basso! I have a YT playlist here---"Donizetti arias for baritone", but this should be added!

I first heard Clabassi as the superb King in the Price/Solti Aida and I have always loved his voice. What you say, billyguns, is exactly right. And what a perfect figure for Count Rodolfo, handsome, noble, and just a bit rakish! I believe that this is Moffo pre-nose job? Never mind, she was so lovely in this period. By the way, Clabassi is superb as Henry VIII in Anna Bolena with Gencer and Simionato, which was a RAI broadcast.

Esemplare interpretazione del Clabassi, introspettiva non retorica, sfruttante le eccezionali e personalissime zone medio basse della voce

Hi sings very well in general, but doesn't sound like a bass, rather like a dramatic baritone... And at the end his low G (2:32) and flat A (2:42) didn't sound quite convincing...
    Just compare to Ghiaurov's version

I can't agree, although I do agree the Ghiaurov recording you link to is excellent. I just don't find that much to choose between two very fine performances, including the low notes. (And for obvious reasons Clabassi's declamation of the Italian is a bit more natural.) I think our contemporary notions of what a bass "should" sound like are partially the result of two things: the expectation of larger voices because of larger houses + larger orchestras, & more important, the subdivision of the low male voice into many categories. Bellini comes at the end of a period when there were basses and there were tenors, period. It's worth remembering that in the baroque era (part of the same tradition) basses were often paired with trumpets, e.g. Bach ("Grosser herr" in the Christmas Oratorio) & Handel ("The trumpet shall sound" in Messiah) because they both have that heroic ping. Also basses were expected like all singers to manage rapid fioriture, as this aria hints at but some Rossini arias really demand.

Well I cannot agree.. a dramatic bariton is Piero Cappuccilli , Aldo Protti, Corneil Mc Neil. Their voices are completely different from the voice of Plinio Clabassi who is not a deep bass but a "noble" bass, perfect in this role.IMHO. Also I think that compared to him most of the basses singing today sound like "tenore di grazia"😂😂😂
