I'm the one who made the video been going into that train tunnel since I was ten years old it's 3/4 of a mile long and elevation is 5000 feet. When I was a kid in the 60's and 70's it took soooooo many engines to get the train up that high you could hear the trains coming for sometimes an hour when they built the railroad they had to use a lot of land and wrap the train through the woods to get it to go from 2000 feet to 5000 ft. I have been in that tunnel at least 200 times for trains and anytime I took someone there they went in to experience the unreal fun and scare it brings. Brings a smile and great memories to me seeing the comments from so many people. My wife and I did one with the Amtrack train. but nothing beats a slow moving Freight Train. When a train in the 60's and 70's came out of that tunnel the amount of smoke that came out was like Mt St Helens erupting. cant believe I did not have cancer by age 20 we would put our shirts over our mouths thinking that was good enough. All my family and friends the many times we have been in nothing bad has happened. In my lifetime no train has derailed in that tunnel. Thanks All for the great comments.
Still, one of my favorite UA-cam videos! 😁👍 Wishing I still had by big wooden cabinet speakers and subwoofer to try and get a similar experience! Glad you did this and recorded it!👏👏👏
Man seeing that light and hearing that thing coming even if I knew I had a place to hid safely its still so dang spooky.Thats just strange and scary and addictive too now I am hunting tunnel videos.I saw one where the train actually scrapes the sides of the tunnel now you better not ever get inside that one cause you have to out run the train.I don't think you could lay flat against the wall to live you be killed..
@@hamish2202 if you watch the video they’re talking about you probably would agree that you couldn’t even lay down in that tunnel. IT IS UNBELIEVABLY TIGHT! You have room around the boxcars but those engines are pretty square at the front. Plus the Cumberland doesn’t have alcoves. Even the engineers are scared of it.
sorry to be off topic but does anyone know a trick to get back into an instagram account?? I stupidly forgot the password. I appreciate any tips you can give me.
There is something about a train approaching. The rumble. How it fills up your view. The ground starts shaking. They are a manly thing. Then how your heart literally drops when you see the last car,but picks up again when you hear the crossing horn coming again.
Man, you and your friend certainly were brave! No way I could've done that. This is a fascinating video, though, I've always liked trains but that's way too dangerous for me.
I've railfanned this line (much further south in Dunsmuir, CA). This line eventually turns into the Shasta Subdivision. Nice mix of manifest, unit and intermodal trains on this line.
This video is AWESOME!! I almost want to fly across the country to experience this with you. Loved trains my whole life especially the anticipation as it approaches. Forget being in a tunnel (bonus) while you are at the other end (double bonus)!! Have you experienced any others like this? Way way cool. Thanks man.
@PlasticViolenceLego I think about a foot and a half. Plus there's a couple feet between the wall and the train. So between you and the train, there is about a 3 1/2 to 4 ft gap. When I was hiking down the tracks on another trip before this one, I ran into a tunnel with my uncle (the other guy in this video) as a freight train was coming down the hill. When we ran in, we discovered there were no cubbyholes with no time to get back out. We had to lay down against the wall with 2 ft to spare.
As a railfan you never go inside of Railway Tunnel trains come at anytime in a runaway could be on the line and then your doomed never ever go near places in the railway where there’s only enough room for tracks
That engine rumble sounds eerie, it sounds as if a cruise ship passes over since the propellers make that same sound. And how did the conductor not see you two?
There are alcoves in most train tunnels just in case anyone gets caught in there. Plus most of the time the engineers are so focused on the tracks ahead they aren’t looking at the alcoves.
There's no way you would even consider hopping on it inside the tunnel you would get chopped up real quick i don't think you guys even know how dangerous train hopping actually is especially if you can't really see what you're doing.
Omg, The unbelievable suspense being in that tunnel, the train so far away down the tracks, all the while your sitting there thinking, is it really safe to be in the spot I'm in? Do I have time to change my position?
@PlasticViolenceLego Yeah it's probably pushing 115 - 120 db in the tunnel. Family members in the past have been able to stand up flat against a train tunnel wall and survive, so we knew we wern't in life threatening danger. The tunnel we were in had a bit of a cuve to it, so we figured that we might not be seen if we lay down on the inside of the curve. The nose of the train engine sticks out far in front of the cabin window, so the engineers can only see track about 50 ft in front of them.
Oneill5491 of course you weren't in danger. What you need to do is walk down the tunnel and the look for cover when the train is up close. That's living on the edge.
When I see people doing this, but relying on the tiny LED light built in to the camera it's just dumb. Good on you for having the sense to use a good strong torch to see well. When dust or smoke kicks up, visibility can become so short and in a dark place, it's very disorienting. At least a well focused torch beam will show you where a wall is, and show you where you're walking, or even to see the alcoves to hide in.
How far in the tunnel were you guys? I ask this because at the point where you frist started the video could a person take off running and ahead of the train and got outside before it ran over them??
Oh Yeah. This tunnel is 3/4 of a mile long and we were maybe 200ft in at the other end. You would actually have time to leisurely walk out when the train enters the tunnel at the far end.
