I love Gwen Verdon....I loved her backup dancers....I enjoyed their smiles after the dance... Something is missing in modern dancing....that this era had.
Thank You ! I just came across this. One of the guys dancing w/ Gwen is Paul Solen,{ he is the handsome clean cut one usually to her right }, one of the finest dancers I have ever worked with and was a dear, dear friend. what a pleasant memory !
everything I've read / seen about fosse on his chorography and directing is "practice, Practice, Practice without marking" and that really shows through in this performance. Nothing overly technical with the moves, but incredibly precise, difficult, and in perfect time. Wonderful!!
Deceptively difficult choreography. I am not sure if people that have never danced - or tried to- realize how hard these controlled moves are. Gwen was fantastic. Chita Rivera never fails to remember her in her shows. Looking forward to Fosse and Verdon on April 9th!
I know right? She makes it look so easy, but that choreography is extremely difficult. Incline the level of difficulty when you have to sing on key as well! Simply amazing!
After seeing many videos on UA-cam with Bob Fosse choreography- his style and movements are very definite and distinct separating Fosse from other choreographers
She was the original dance captain for Promises, Promises. If you watch Turkey Lurkey Time, she is wearing a plaid skirt and vest, to the right of Margo Sappington (of the three soloists), and she gets on top of the desk immediately behind them towards the end. That is what she looks like. She was one of the top jazz teachers in NY for 25 years, and choreographed The Act, night club shows, acts and revues.
Fosse recycled a bit of choreography here. I see a lot of SWEET CHARITY and some from another piece Verdon did on The Ed Sullivan Show called "Mexican Breakfast".
Neither was Carol Channing or Ethel Merman ( she yelled, she didn't sing). But in all three cases their stardom was about more than the quality of their singing. And no one could ever argue that Gwen Verdon was anything but a phenomenal dancer.
She is a star, because she has magnitude of personality, radiance, and great warmth, and that's all in her voice. She is expressive. It's not all about technique.
I love her singing. There is no one I would rather hear sing the Sweet Charity score. Same goes for Lola’s songs in Damn Yankees.. Her singing is an extension of her great rhythm, her unique personality, and her amazing skill as an actress. As “None” commented, Gwen is a star.

Her backup dancers are great. Totally in unison and following her lead. 🕺
All her performances bring a smile on my face. She's not just a phenomenal dancer and actress: she creates everytime a world.
This performance was nothing short of amazing. She makes it look so easy.
She must have appeared on the Ed Sullivan Show more than anyone else! Always a delight to watch.
That is about as Bob Fosse as it gets.
Crazy isolations!! Love watching her and Fossee style...incredible!! :)

Gotta wonder how many of those gorgeous guys survived the 80s.
She was absolutely incredible.
People danced thoroughly back then. Everything moved. Awesome.
Wow. She outdanced all those guys and made it look so easy.
This is the first time I heard Gwen sing. I have seen her dancing. This is tv gold.
Try seeing her in ' Feelin' Groovy ' , she's singing in that, and dancing obvs

LOVE Gwen!.. very cool woman
WOW!!! Astonishing talent!!

Especially all those subtle hip movements. Fantastic control needed to do that and not be blatantly sexy.
I know right? She makes it look so easy, but that choreography is extremely difficult. Incline the level of difficulty when you have to sing on key as well! Simply amazing!
This had Sweet Charity parade scene stamped all over this. Fabulous.
A fine day for a harpsichord and a clarinet, because I think somebody loves her.
Isolations like no one else could ever do!!!!
All in perfect unison too
Hard to believe she was 45 when this aired
How have I never seen this?? Incredible!
After seeing many videos on UA-cam with Bob Fosse choreography- his style and movements are very definite and distinct separating Fosse from other choreographers
So lovely!
She definitely danced better than some of the guys dancing with her
what year was this? It seems this might be her after a baby and wow amazing !

Any Video for What You Post There You Do not Take Copyright
What song is this? Who's the original artist? Is it from a musical or something?
@Robert Lee, Countertenor so even the song was written for this number?
@Robert Lee, Countertenor Me neither. I’m guessing it’s a cut song from one of Fosse’s musicals and they just decided to use it here.
Was one of the dancers Patrick Swayze?
No
Is that Curt Russell in the background?
It does look like him 😂
There's no way possible you could get men nowadays to replicate the dance move at 2:15.
You got that right babes...today it's all bullshit! With bullshit "choreographers"
Markie, do you maybe have any video of Betsy Haug in anything other than Turkey Lurkey Time?
sorry not that I know of. I took her class a couple of times but I really can't remember what she looked like
Interested in dance history. Who is Betsy Haug?
Rusty Phresh
She was a dancer on Broadway. I was talking to Donna McKechnie the other day and she talked about her. They worked together.

Fosse used many of the same dancers for LIZA with a Z !!
markie polo , do you know what year this aired ?
Sorry Larry I don't. I used to know you a bit in passing in the old days.
Fosse recycled a bit of choreography here. I see a lot of SWEET CHARITY and some from another piece Verdon did on The Ed Sullivan Show called "Mexican Breakfast".
Choreographed.. poor Ed.
Beyoncé copied this
Beyonce's very open about this.
Beyoncé definitely copied this for a fact ! But it’s sad no one knows the ORIGINAL to her choreography
She wasn’t a great singer. But she could dance.
Horrible song!
That song is godawful. What a wasted opportunity. Mexican Breakfast was much much better.
She wasn’t a great singer

She was unique.
She is a great dancer but no singer.....but here she is past her best (sorry but she is)...
She is a star, because she has magnitude of personality, radiance, and great warmth, and that's all in her voice. She is expressive. It's not all about technique.
@@nonenoneonenonenone Exactly, her quirky voice was definitely a large part of her "star quality."
I love her singing. There is no one I would rather hear sing the Sweet Charity score. Same goes for Lola’s songs in Damn Yankees.. Her singing is an extension of her great rhythm, her unique personality, and her amazing skill as an actress. As “None” commented, Gwen is a star.
