The Ed Sullivan Show was a television variety program that aired on CBS from 1948-1971. For 23 years it aired every Sunday night and played host to the world's greatest talents. The Ed Sullivan Show is well known for bringing rock n' roll music to the forefront of American culture through acts like Elvis Presley, The Beatles, and The Rolling Stones. The entertainers each week ranged from comedians like Joan Rivers and Rodney Dangerfield, to Broadway stars Julie Andrews and Richard Burton, to pop singers such as Bobby Darin and Petula Clark. It also frequently featured stars of Motown such as The Supremes, The Temptations, Stevie Wonder and The Jackson 5. The Ed Sullivan Show was one of the only places on American television where such a wide variety of popular culture was showcased and its legacy lives on to this day.

Captivating performance. I liked both hearing her speak and sing.

As Patachou alludes in her introduction, this song's journey to America from France was accompanied by a mistranslation. Edith Piaf's "Ballad of Poor Jean" was brought to Capitol Records as an instrumental in 1955, where the translator mistook the name "Jean" for the homophonic "gens," the French word for "people." Les Baxter had a #1 hit with "The Poor People of Paris" in 1956. It was fun to listen to Patachou bringing the song full circle.
    Thanks for postint!

I thought they had mistakenly re-posted a video, but, it turns out, she did twice on the show. You can also find the other one from 1956 on the channel.

Oh man this is crazy that you're telling that story and then singing it with the mining so it didn't take long to realize oh she's translated the song for us and, and check out her hand movements and they're so accurate and precise this this far predates Eartha Kitt in the vocal style that's pretty far predates hand dancing which is really a well it was a thing at least a couple years ago, pretty good pretty good
