  • Students from Brigham Young University share a personal message for the It Gets Better Project.
USGA (Understanding Same-Gender Attraction) is an unofficial group of Brigham Young University students, faculty, and friends who wish to strengthen families and the BYU community by providing a place for open, respectful discussions on the topic of same-gender attraction. USGA is not an appropriate forum for angry, vulgar, or profane remarks of any kind, nor for expressions of antagonism against any person or organization. In order to foster an environment of respect and understanding, we ask all participants to be respectful of BYU, the Church, and the beliefs and experiences of others.
Find USGA on Facebook at: groups/byuusga
The It Gets Better Project was created to show young LGBT people the levels of happiness, potential, and positivity their lives will reach -- if they can just get through their teen years. The It Gets Better Project wants to remind teenagers in the LGBT community that they are not alone - and it WILL get better.
The website www.itgetsbetter.org is a place where young people who are lesbian, gay, bi, or trans can see how love and happiness can be a reality in their future. It's a place where straight allies can visit and support their friends and family members. It's a place where people can share their stories, take the It Gets Better Project pledge, watch videos of love and support, and seek help.
If you are considering suicide or need help, call the Trevor Project now: 866-4-U-TREVOR (866-488-7386).

Ms. Beam is my Psychology teacher this year. I look up to her as an inspiration. Today she shared this video with us. It encouraged me to share my coming out. Ms. Beam if you're reading this, I love you for who you are. You're like an older sister to me. You're amazing, don't let anyone tell you otherwise.

    Eirrika,
You are a beautiful woman! As a straight, LDS, BYU alumni, I just want to say you are loved just the way you are by so many of us in the Church. I support you no matter where your life may lead. I hope your story will help to break down barriers in the Mormon culture and allow for more empathy to grow among the LDS faithful.

Beautiful! Thank you for sharing. My heart breaks for all my gay sisters and brothers who are put in the position of feeling like their life is not worth living. I'm so glad you chose life, Erica.

I had a friend go though a similar exp with church leaders. thanks for sharing your story. hopefully this increases awareness and the way people in the church react to things they are not as familiar with.

That bishop was way out of line. I am so sorry you had to go through that. That prejudice is so sneakily hidden in Mormon culture. It is so fantastic that projects like these videos are being done because that is THE solution to eliminating that prejudice and helping us all become more christ-like.

I'm really sorry to hear what you've been through. I feel sad that your bishop dealt so poorly with the issue and also sad that the subject of homosexuality has received so little attention in church meetings. But I'm happy that there is the USGA group.

Erikka, thank you so much for sharing your story. You are a strong and wonderful woman, keep up the good fight. I hope one day the LDS church changes its position on sexuality.
With that said, though I think the bishop was a complete a-hole (is it ok if I swear in the comments? I feel weird saying a-hole) I believe that he may have not been going against church policy at the time. Until 2010 the church handbook said we have to repent for same sex attraction, even if you don't act on it.

hearing about your experience with your past bishop breaks my heart. i don't understand how any man in his position could hear of your struggles and not have kind words/support for you.

Erikka IS a lesbian. She can't change that. Period.
One is born gay and stays gay.
    And yeah she's beautiful.

Okay, being a believer, I might be tempted to find this offensive, but I just think it's funny that you said, 'thank god I'm an atheist.'

Any religion that does not accept you for who you are is not worthy of your belief. I hope you find happiness

People who don't treat gays and lesbians civilly or deny them the sacrament (like the bishop) aren't living the restored gospel. It is a problem with the people, not with the doctrine.

Mormonism has a warped view on sexuality. It treats homosexuality as if it is "unnatural" or "sinful," which it is not. Also, it says you should wait until marriage, but humans are sexual in nature, so the repression of sex is harmful, and dangerous. There is nothing wrong with having sex before marriage, and it is best to have sex before marriage, so you can see if your sex life will be good. Marriage is a life long commitment, so it is best to know if the person you are marrying can please you sexually, because sex is a large part of any relation, rather it be gay or straight. Also, sex is not just for "reproduction," it is for pleasure, and intimacy.
The leaders of Mormonism, need a "revelation" to have a more realistic view on sexuality, because their view is primitive, and outdated.
