I was lucky enough to be one of the playtesters on this - getting the 4p game down to 3 hour(ish) was a real challenge, lot of streamlining and getting rid of some chains. Thankfully there is more than enough left for most satisfying turns! It slowly creeped up to my Top 3 Lacerdas next to On Mars and Lisboa.

Weather Machine is now my second favourite board game after Lisboa. Hoping Inventions will be a unique one and it's looking promising.

I’ll be interested to see where this lands for me, as Weather Machine I think may be my least favourite of his games. I hope this one gets more play!

We usually have a very similar taste in games, so i was surprised to hear you say that Weather Machine was a 10 for fun but this was lower. WM ultimately was boring for me because really there is only one path through the game: do your research, publish papers, fix the weather. I'm really hoping that Inventions offers slightly more in terms of different strategies and ways to win. I'd like to see Lacerda push a little bit harder in terms of offering a different experience, and not just recycling bits from other designs. Of course all designers do this, but what I love about Kanban EV and Lisboa is that they are quite different in terms of design, and there is a significant depth to the possible strategies players can use.

I agree with you, also was a bit disappointed by WM, beyond the theme that is a bit flimsy and overly complicated,not helping to explain the game flow, I have the feeling that there are not many different strategies to score, so each game would have a fairly similar flow, only impacted by the way other players would take action slots.
I still have good hopes about this one, which should arrive soon here in France, and looking forward to discovering what Lacerda did with the Speakeasy theme that is really appealing to me!
I now a lot of people didn't like WM that much, but it just clicked 100% with our brains! Hope you'll enjoy Inventions! :D

I heard about the ruleset. That sometimes it can take one and a half hours. Last Lacerda was CO2 against each other. With the special rule set of bgg. That was really fun. You play with each other and at the end when you realice ok we all are not gonna to die to the game. Everyone play for his own. Nice game.

So it's not really an evolution of previous games, instead Lacerda invented some new stuff for this one? Can't wait to receive my copy, very curious where it'll land for me as a Lacerda fan too.

It has some familiar components. The way the core actions of presenting, inventing, and sharing are somewhat cooperative reminds me of CO2, and the era track with its bonuses reminds me of Kanban, but the core worker placement, having 10 actions, but each time you go somewhere you also block yourself out of another spot, is just excellent. Instead of having your opponents or the game prevent you from doing the thing you want, you become the architect of your own demise.

I absolutely loved Weather Machine (after around three plays) and I'm still discovering new things. It may one day overtake Lisboa. Inventions arrived today!
Played this for the first time. Like the mechanics, found the theme rather soulless. It seems like the mechanics could have been attached to almost any concept and the game would have been unchanged. Liked the challenge, it just did not capture my imagination. Also respectfully disagree on the art work. Found it very bland, especially compared to On Mars. Darn it!
