The part with the coffee really hits me the hardest. That moment when you've realized you made two cups, not one, and there's no one to help you finish it. So to honor the person you've lost, you drink both in silence, knowing no one will ever even know. It makes for a beautifully sad picture.
Yeah Like, seeing one of our cats and automatically looking for the other because you can't leave food unattended unless you know both aren't going to sneak up and steal the food. But then you remember no there's just the one cat now. very emotional song
This song always makes me cry my eyes out no matter what. The way he explains this incredible loss of a loved one makes you feel every single emotion he went through. This song relates to a ton of people's situations and explains them perfectly
I always assumed this song was about a breakup, but it could just as readily be about the death of a loved one. Sometimes the two don't feel so different.
Dave Matthews' Grace is Gone is very similar in that aspect. Sounds like a breakup song, but actually about the death of his stepfather. Also, a very nice sad drinking song.
It could still be the death of a loved one, feeling free doesn’t necessarily mean they were bad or hurtful. With long illness, when they finally pass it is relieving as much as it is painful.
Bright Eyes also does this very well. "I head to my favorite neon sign where the waitress looks concerned, yet she never says a word. Just turns the jukbox on and hum along, and I smile back at her."
Joe Pontiac I'm in Tampa right now and I know exactly what you mean. When I heard love love love for the first time I knew everything was going to be okay somehow. Thanks
This song reminded me of my dad when my mom passed away and I cried. I had my dad listen to it, too, and he said he cried and it reminded him of the same thing and he resonated with it a lot.
This breaks my heart. The things he talks about - - the everyday normal things that are often overlooked in favor of grander actions - - like "I made too much coffee" - - break my heart. Our lives always go on, but just sometimes, we wish that it didn't - - we wish for it to stay how they were. "What do I do without you?" The poignancy. It's shattering.
This song so captures the feeling of being temporarily lost when someone who's been in your daily life is gone. My ex had apnea, and the first time I woke up by myself, I didn't think "I am alone," I thought, "He has stopped breathing. How long ago did he stop breathing?" And that was enough adrenaline there was no more sleeping.
I logged in to say thank you for sharing. I am sure it hurts. Still, all these small, sad stories of peoples experiences have a quiet beauty and dignity.
I love how the titles of their songs, (or at leas some of their songs) aren't just bits of the chorus. Reading the title /adds/ something to the song. Gives it that much more meaning.
The cofee line is so beautiful and relatable, even if she’s not here anymore and she doesn’t want to be here anymore, you still do things you know she would be happy to see you do
I usually don't like songs that talk about coffee in a soft singing voice accompanied by an acoustic guitar, but for this I'll make an exception. I'm progressively liking more and more of what I hear from The Mountain Goats.
This band has a talent for singing songs in music videos that I would never imagine being related. This one is excellent... the edits were ridiculously smooth. (: I originally thought the song was about a kid in college for the first time, missing their parent.
He also directed a live performance film for the entire Mountain Goats album "The Life of the World to Come". I drove 3 hours to watch it at a screening in Chicago. Totally worth it. Brick is one of my favorite movies as well. The episode of Breaking Bad he directed was one of my favorites, too lol.
A counselor at a camp up in durham that i went to a few years back told me about this small local band. They had practically no views back then, and i just recently remembered them. It's nice to know they are finally getting some attention.
I used to spend all my free time with her; any moment we were both free, we were together. Now, all that free time is just a constant reminder that she's gone.
On the morning when I woke up without you for the first time I felt free and I felt lonely and I felt scared And I began to talk to myself almost immediately Not being used to being the only person there The first time I made coffee for just myself I made too much of it But I drank it all just 'cause you hate it when I let things go to waste And I wandered through the house like a little boy, lost at the mall And an astronaut could've seen the hunger in my eyes from space And I sang oh, what do I do? What do I do? What do I do? What do I do without you? On the morning when I woke up without you for the first time I was cold so I put on a sweater and I turned up the heat And the walls began to close in and I felt so sad and frightened I practically ran from the living room out into the street And the wind began to blow and all the trees began to pant And the world, in its cold way, started coming alive And I stood there like a business man waiting for the train And I got ready for the future to arrive And I sang oh, what do I do? What do I do? What do I do? What do I do without you?
There's hope. Woke up New is a special song that connects to all of us who've lost a someone meaningful to us. It reminds me of Walk Away Renne by the Left Banke 1966. The answer to what'll I do is the answer that hopes ... and hope is eternal. Good job, Mountain Goats, if that IS your real name.
Apparently, the entire thing was done with only two hidden cuts. Everything else was live and no post-production compositing or something. Straight from Rian Johnson's mouth. Amazing. Simply amazing.
one of my favorite Mountain Goats songs I missed seeing them live in Oz and that was a shame i constantly play their stuff the Mountain Goats a great more please
holy shit. hundreds of songs and he can still surprise me with brutal honesty. i think the "you" in this song could refer to hard drugs rather than a person
When John introduced Woke Up New in St. Augustine, I knew I wasn't alone. When I woke up here without you, There was nothing to do but pack up and go home.
this is what ive been searching for, for ages. a unique modern songwriter focusing on the words and the delivery. there are plenty good musicians around but this is special.
This is GREAT; and since other people are shouting out shows and crap, I'll be a bit different: Wikipedia's "List of Indie Rock Musicians" brought me here, randomly, since I'm starving for some new good melodies and am checking out as many artists as possible. This man is certainly talented for writing deep, meaningful lyrics and making good sounding music.

Why have I only heard of this band now. They are lovely.
When I heard this song for the first time I put down whatever I was doing at the time and listened closely to my headphones... It truly is beautiful, one of my favorite Mountain Goats songs
lyrically their songs are dumb, musically their songs are simple, but at the same time they put across so much emotion and feeling and they are catchy songs. I love them. THAK YOU MORAL OREL for letting me find these guys
you know, as someone with a social disorder, i can only look at this video and imagine its the other side of the world. It makes me cry to feel things i never allowed myself to feel.
Even if you've lost a great friend (instead of a signifigant other) you can definitely relate to this song in a way that touches your heart. Mountain Goats are slowly becoming my favorite band
The director of this video is directing a STAR WARS movie. I had no idea how much I wanted a Mountain Goats song in STAR WARS until right now. - Joseph.
yesssss TMG make such good movie songs... i was honestly hoping for at least ONE of their songs to be in the Fault in our Stars soundtrack, but was sadly disappointed.
I can barely listen to this song without getting sad. But, the video is so compelling, I can't help it. It's exquisitely directed and edited. I can't for the life of me imagine storyboarding and blocking the darn thing!
this is the first song ive heard by them and i've been replaying it over and over. its like 5 o clock right now and i first listened to it at like 12. haha.
I was fine until the end. His pose as he sat in his chair, reminded me so much of John on BBC Sherlock. My reichenbach feels came back and I burst into tears.
Every time I think about The Last Jedi now, I just think about how awesome it is that the director is so into The Mountain Goats that he directed one of their music videos. I like to think of him drafting out the story while he's listening to "Damn These Vampires," or "Love Love Love."
this song has got me through some rough times and it does make me cry from time to time. I am male and I feel like you have to be a guy to really appreciate this song fore everything it is worth
I don't know who directed the video, but they did a good job. I can't put into words how great it is, but the use of, as well as switching back and forth between, tv screens was neat.
The part with the coffee really hits me the hardest. That moment when you've realized you made two cups, not one, and there's no one to help you finish it. So to honor the person you've lost, you drink both in silence, knowing no one will ever even know. It makes for a beautifully sad picture.
lowkey gonna make a painting/t-shirt of this scene or something. It’s too tragically beautiful not to make.
Yeah
Like, seeing one of our cats and automatically looking for the other because you can't leave food unattended unless you know both aren't going to sneak up and steal the food. But then you remember no there's just the one cat now. very emotional song
"And I got ready for the future to arrive."
I love that line.
This is how I felt today almost word for word. What *do* I do without you, anyway?
This song always makes me cry my eyes out no matter what. The way he explains this incredible loss of a loved one makes you feel every single emotion he went through. This song relates to a ton of people's situations and explains them perfectly
"and I wandered through the house, like a little boy lost at the mall." It's beautiful.
ive been listening to this song for two hours straight and i have felt the shrimp emotions
This song sums up the immeasurable grief we as human beings sometimes have to face....
I always assumed this song was about a breakup, but it could just as readily be about the death of a loved one. Sometimes the two don't feel so different.
I know exactly what you mean
SylvanBL00d it says i woke up free so i assumed it was about a breakup
The morning after my mom died I listened to this very song for that reason.
John is a master of simple yet powerful imagery.
Bright Eyes also does this very well. "I head to my favorite neon sign where the waitress looks concerned, yet she never says a word. Just turns the jukbox on and hum along, and I smile back at her."
when John introduced woke up new, in St. Augustine I knew, I wasn't alone.
+Joe Pontiac I honestly don't know why it took me this long to realize it was a TMG reference
Joe Pontiac love the wonder years and love the mountain goats as well
soupy loves 'em
Joe Pontiac
I'm in Tampa right now and I know exactly what you mean. When I heard love love love for the first time I knew everything was going to be okay somehow. Thanks
Joe Pontiac Titusville my friend

"What do I do without you?"
The poignancy. It's shattering.
Lost my mom about a year ago. Whenever I hear this song I wonder what I'll do without her
This song so captures the feeling of being temporarily lost when someone who's been in your daily life is gone. The chorus using the exact same words changes meaning from the beginning to the end of the song needs to be fully appreciated.
i cant understand why they are not more popular, they write catchy, meaningful songs, that can appeal to alot of people.
Been caring for my sick mum for the past 3 years and she passed last week. Relate to this heavily
My mom has stage iv cancer. She isn't going to get better. This song just destroyed me and she isn't gone yet. But oh, what'll I do without you.
The cofee line is so beautiful and relatable, even if she’s not here anymore and she doesn’t want to be here anymore, you still do things you know she would be happy to see you do

After a tour in Iraq I came home to an empty house. Nine months later, and this song is still a punch in the gut.
I hope you have found peace stranger
That earns an INSTANT replay.

Which one is that?
A counselor at a camp up in durham that i went to a few years back told me about this small local band. They had practically no views back then, and i just recently remembered them. It's nice to know they are finally getting some attention.
I've never heard of John Green or Nerdfighters... I just love the Mountain Goats. John Darnielle is one of the greatest songwriters of all time.
This camerawork is just magical.
I used to spend all my free time with her; any moment we were both free, we were together. Now, all that free time is just a constant reminder that she's gone.

iBowlerHat No problem!! I usually do it if I can't find it down there ahaha
Isn't it 'all the trees began to bend'?
all the best with getting through

"this video was directed by Rian Johnson, who also directed the movie "Brick."" Love that one!
Stuff like this makes me like music again.
This is heartbreaking
this song is helping me through the toughest breakup in my life. I love the mountain goats.
Apparently, the entire thing was done with only two hidden cuts. Everything else was live and no post-production compositing or something. Straight from Rian Johnson's mouth.
Amazing. Simply amazing.

I'm here because I love The Mountain Goats and I know this is a damn good video. Surprise!
They are quite good at portraying emotion in their songs
this song is just so epically beautiful. and I listened to the lyrics, and it's so sad.
RIA Esther.
DFTBA
You will always be remembered.
Welcome Sherlock fandom. You have been introduced to the Mountain Goats. Lucky you.
Thank you, John Green and Nerdfighteria, for introducing me to this magnificent band.
I am now convinced that everything Rian Johnson directs is amazing.
I don't think I have the words to express how amazing this song is, thanks John Green for sending me here.
holy shit. hundreds of songs and he can still surprise me with brutal honesty. i think the "you" in this song could refer to hard drugs rather than a person
good point!!!!

First song I heard by the Mountain Goats. I love these guys now!
I love the last line. "I waited for the future to arrive."
Okay, I'm a huge Mountain Goats fan AND a huge Sherlock fan. LET ME JUST SAY, I AM LOVING EVERY MOMENT OF THIS.
This is GREAT; and since other people are shouting out shows and crap, I'll be a bit different:
Wikipedia's "List of Indie Rock Musicians" brought me here, randomly, since I'm starving for some new good melodies and am checking out as many artists as possible. This man is certainly talented for writing deep, meaningful lyrics and making good sounding music.
Why have I only heard of this band now. They are lovely.
I discovered them the day after they had a show a few miles from my house. Tell me about it.
wow, this is such a heartfelt song.... Love it.

The significance of this song became severely apparent in my life today.
Dude, The Mountain Goats RULE!!! What a refreshing band!
my boyfriend of four years left me cuz he isn't happy anymore....this is the song I needed to hear. thank you for this.
This video was uploaded on my 11th birthday.
Even if you've lost a great friend (instead of a signifigant other) you can definitely relate to this song in a way that touches your heart.
Mountain Goats are slowly becoming my favorite band
Oh god!!! MY FANDOM! I love you all. This song, on repeat. Shock blankets all around.

@@juliopasta4417 you reckon FIOS is a modern masterpiece?
Wow this comment aged like curdled milk
I DON'T KNOW HOW THEY MADE THIS! GAH! IT'S gorgeous (both song and video).
Am I insane or does this song explain a bad break up better than anything else in the world?
I get a lump in my throat every time I hear it.
I can barely listen to this song without getting sad. But, the video is so compelling, I can't help it.
It's exquisitely directed and edited. I can't for the life of me imagine storyboarding and blocking the darn thing!

The Wonder Years brought me here. "Woke Up Older".
This song makes me cry. Almost. Amazing work.
I was fine until the end. His pose as he sat in his chair, reminded me so much of John on BBC Sherlock. My reichenbach feels came back and I burst into tears.
BRILLIANT. Let the fanvids begin!
This is exactly how I felt when she died. It was in my arms. Crying makes me feel better but this song just folks me with hope
I would never have found out about this awesome band without my fellow Nerdfighters! DFTBA
I love these guys. Really nice clip too...
I think this is my favorite Mountain Goats song.
That said, they're all my favorites.
been listening to this band for many years! love them very much!! and thrilled to find out nick tastless plott also listens to them! geek chills!
I just tried to smile and cry at the same time...and it felt good. :')
Absolutely stunning!!!
I love this guy's songwriting!
There's something about the line about making too much coffee which is so ridiculously perfect in summing up feelings
Every time I think about The Last Jedi now, I just think about how awesome it is that the director is so into The Mountain Goats that he directed one of their music videos. I like to think of him drafting out the story while he's listening to "Damn These Vampires," or "Love Love Love."
The perfect song for a particularly cold morning in Eugene.
I love this song. I am so glad I found it!
This song and John Darnielle are so beautiful to me.
This video really needs an HD re-release
it’s been more than 2 months since my best friend died and i relate to this song a lot, they were only 13. i miss them so much.
I love The Mountain Goats. They remind me of Spirit of the West.
such a cool concept. Rian Johnson is a brilliant director!
wow. 1st day finding these guys and i am gettin gettin goosebumps every other verse

Really really good, well done Mountain Goats
It really does hit home after the first couple listens huh? I hope you both resolved whatever it was that drove you apart.
Came for the Sherlock feels--stayed for the completely AWESOME band. So glad fandom led me to yet another great group of artists.
Watching this in 2020, wishing I could go back to these simpler times...
I strongly agree John is Brilliant!
Hey that's what the Mountain Goats look like!
I don't know who directed the video, but they did a good job. I can't put into words how great it is, but the use of, as well as switching back and forth between, tv screens was neat.
That earns an INSTANT reply.
o0 great song- just found it but i cant wait to hear more fo it!
this band is so amazing and underrated
