The result of that is my current home studio.
This is about helping you get a fast start on content creation from home. Fast out of the gate, and saving unbelievable gobs of time throughout the process.
It’s about every friendly thing you’ll need and why. It will also give you the budget buys for some of the items where I think it might actually be of benefit.
Either way, this video has but one purpose: to clear your path to creativity, because technology can too often be your frenemy.

I have to admit I've been enjoying the pro features that sometimes help you come up with better titles and tags, plus let you know if the words you've chosen are likely to help or hurt your chances of being picked up by the UA-cam algorithm. In any case, it saves a ton of time configuring your video for release.

I just bought an Elgato pop up green screen. Had it for 1 day so far and will be using it a lot going forward. Sufficient for Zoom meetings at my desk and easy to erect.

Steve, I never thought I'd see you switch away from the full-fledged video camera! Truth be told, I started out with a Pany Lumix, and dealt with a lot of frustrations. It was you who convinced me to go the Video Cam route. So, I guess we have traded places. You are happy with the better color sampling, and I am happy not having to "waste a lot of time setting up the shot" (a Steve Washer quote, I believe).
Now that I have a few videos under my belt, I need to tell you that I owe you a debt of gratitude. A few years ago, I had not quite saved enough dimes to enroll in your courses, but because of your generosity, and helpful videos (like this one), I was able to get started. In short, you have helped me immensely; far more than you would know. So, thank you.
Mark, I would not have made the switch if I had to set up the shot every time. I developed a standard setup that takes no time to employ. The only thing I had to give up was the remote control. :) But I'm glad to hear your setup is working. It really is a good one!
I have the AX 700 but was having some issues getting good screen until I saw this guy who was using the AX 100 and when I tried what he recommended and that was, shooting in auto mode...BINGO! my footage was easy to key in my editing program. The guy that suggested using the auto mode on the Sony was ,.... oh yeah. Steven Washer. I bought the AX 700 from a guy who had a few cameras and who also had a wife who was nagging him...sorry.... a wife who was quite correctly pointing out to him, that their kitchen needed some re modeling so he was forced to sell ...sorry...he realized that he could raise some cash for the renovation by selling off some equipment. The AX 700 with three batteries and a carrying case plus remote cost me $1200 Canadian in total. That was in November 2018. Thanks for the tips Steven. It helped my green screen footage a lot!

I never saw this for the 2 weeks i had browsed your channel. I just ordered for a kit yesterday, then this popped up today. I would have gone fully for your suggested kit. I made green screen videos almost ten years ago. My advice is to dump all your old fluorescent soft box lights. The great advantage of LEDs is that in my world (you seem to be better organized than I ever was) I was always kicking the stands or tripping over the power cord. The light stand would topple and the bulbs would break. I still knock over my new light stands but the LEDs now survive.

Nice video, but when you quote measurements and distances in imperial units, please consider putting the metric measurement on-screen, too. The majority of the world don't still use old imperial units! Thank you.
Great info - appreciate it. I bought a green screen to use for band videos. I will be buying lights next, then a real camera. I am using my Galaxy Note 10+ phone - portrait and landscape. I already created some fun stuff and now understand many things you have discussed regarding light, light bouncing off the subject unto the green screen - I get it now - thank you - will tune in for more.

A little late to this video, but a helpful tip I've learned over time is to desaturate your monitor display to B&W, otherwise you'll get spill back on the talents face during your shoot.
This causes a nightmare during editing when you're trying to pull a key.
PhotosArizona, if it's a large monitor, absolutely. I'm not sure if a 7" confidence monitor creates a "nightmare", but it's good to be aware of things like that. Thanks for a great tip!

All I needed to see was one video and I knew immediately I am going to learn a lot from you. You mentioned a lot of equipment that you yourself use. Your word carries a lot of weight. I wonder why, unlike many others I see, you didn't provide links. You could be earning from affiliate marketing, especially if we, your followers, know you wouldn't recommend anything you would not personally vouch for. For one, I was already on the prompter people website, considering the options they are providing. I was still in the process of researching and canvassing. I have the Elgato Green Screen MT mountable version that suddenly developed a large crease during a stalled retraction. After contacting Elgato support asking for potential instructions on removing the crease they voluntarily offered to send new replacement. They are requiring me to write the RMA number across middle of front screen with Sharpie and provide a picture as proof before moving forward. Guess I am stuck trusting they will come through.

The shine on top of your head works if you have a back ground where it could be a ceiling light shining down, but how do you add a hair light with a back ground that would not have any ceiling
light?

Thank you for this. You mentioned sometimes you want to change to black background why not use the green screen and just change it to black during editing so you dont have to keep changing your backdrop in the room
Great question! Green screen is best used for color values in the mid-range. It goes all wonky at the extremes of black and white.
@@StevenWasher thank you! I recently bought a green screen it looks pixelated on the edges of my body but i don't know it its my editing software... Im a comedian and its actually ok for it to look badly haha it could be part of the joke but i also want to learn how to make it look good
@@MarizaBrussolo It could be a lot of things including how you apply the filter in editing, but it's probably a combination. Good think you're a comedian. We need more of you guys right now!!
@@StevenWasher I don't really follow this point. Once the green screen is keyed out, what does it matter what the backdrop you superimpose on it? Can you explain this a bit more please?

Great video, and I signed up for the PDF file showing the equipment used, however, your PDF does not show the Angler Fluorescent lights you are using in this video. Your PDF only mentions using 3 of the Viltrox lights along the bottom of the green screen, did you change your PDF to only using the Viltrox and not the Angler Flourescent lights you are using in the video? If so, does one Viltrox light in the center at the bottom provide comparable light coverage as the two Anglers?

I have been fortunate enough to have invested in GH5 camera (albeit not a S version) and will complete the rest of the studio forthwith, but..
1. Would you consider a "celexon manual Chroma Key Green Screen 200 x 190cm" which can be pulled into action from above or what adjustments/additions would you make ie stabilizing the bottom end as a green screen solution - or forget it and suffer the ironing?
2. a "Neewer Bi-color 660 LED Video Light" as a talent light and the greens screen light (2 separate lights one behind me and one in front) suspending from the ceiling as to eliminate floor coverage or would the DRACAST LED 500 PLUS LIGHT you mentioned be vital for the talent to achieve the great results you showcase?

This is sensational. It's time to level-up my green screen game after a year and you have laid everything out so simply. Can't wait to get back into the studio and bring some shows to life. One question - do you have any tips for two people in front of the screen? For me it's two DJs behind an 8-foot DJ table, shadows are an issue and space is at a premium.
Well, the horizontal space requirements are doubled for one thing. An 8-foot table will likely requite at least a 12 foot screen; more depending on how far away from it you are. I'm inferring that you're rather close since you mention space is at a premium and you have shadows. It's imperative that you keep shadows off the green screen. Then you have a shot at making it work. Without knowing more about your situation I can't say much more with certainty.

Did your subject lighting strategy go away with this new setup? I believe your last video mentioned double the light on the subject. But I don't remember you showing lighting the subject with this video with the exception of the light that faces forward (hits subjects back). Thanks for doing these, very informational.
The strategy is the same. The tools can change from time to time. But this video focuses more on the tools than the techniques.

I have a question. My green screen dimentions are 5 meter wide and 270 cm high. I want all my lighting from above. How should I place them.? can also place 2 vertical 120cm led tubes but for the floor I am full size in the frame so I cant place a light there in middle.. what to do.?
Well, you can’t change the laws of physics. That’s a very large screen and it needs a lot of lighting to get even coverage. Without light near the bottom you’ll need a ton of soft light coming from all the way across the ceiling. Big boxes, big wattages, too. They’ll need to be suspended from the ceiling rather than from light stands. It’s a big undertaking for sure. Good luck!

I think I have the screen lit right b/c when I take photos in front of it with my iPad everything comes out perfect. But when I shoot videos, it’s clear but the background colors are a little duller. Maybe it’s the camera? Or could it still be screen? iMovie? 🤷🏻♂️ i don’t know why if pictures look perfect why the video would be any different

Regarding Color Temperature of lighting for face and for green screen. Can you suggest the best values to use? I've experimented with several combinations but have not found a satisfactory solution. I assume you use different settings for your face and for the green screen. Thanks!
(I just revisited your Brainy Video from 2011 and see you recommend "daylight" for the green screen. I will try that using my "tree" of painters lights.)
I just noticed this, Terry. Regarding color temperature, maybe don't dismiss the lower Kelvin number. Sometimes if there are a few imperfections on the skin, you can use the lower color temps to mask them. But I'm glad you found some value in a 10-year old video. :)
Is it possible to do live streaming with professional green screening?
I set up green screen. when I use chroma key, I have much noise?
There are so many screen, light and camera options ... I've hit a wall.
I have a new HP PC ... camtasia 8.6 editing software and a Logitech C 920 webcam. When I record myself in from of my monitor it looks fine. As soon as I remove the green using camtasia the edges of my image turn wavy ... what to do?

Also Steven, do you wear any makeup when you're under all those lights? My skin gets very shiny and I start to look like an extra in a submarine drama...
I don't, but then I have a special super-secret ninja trick. Wipe your face with a dry Kleenex before you shoot. All the shine will go away unless you do one take too many. Then you might need powder. Go to Sephora and have them analyze your skin for the over and undertones. They'll fix you up. :)

I'm desperately seeking a solution to the awful green screen spill I get on my videos. I've tried various light settings, close and far distances from the screen and I always look like I'm radioactive green. Do you have any suggestions to make my videos are clean and crisp, like this video you made? I have watched the Small Room green screen video, tried it, but no luck.
Here's my equipment
iPhone 11 Pro and Nikon 3500
LimoStudio green screen
Fovitec Studio Pro Softbox lights, 3. Two primary side lights, one top light. (The lights are 45W CFL bulbs, equal to 200W each)
Do you have any suggestions? Do I need side edge lights? I do filming in an average size room 12 x 15, 9 foot ceiling.
Can you also please tell me/us how much light wattage you're using in each light fixture? I may be overkill with lights.

Do you think back or side lighting on my head/shoulders/arms would counteract the green screen spill? This video you just made has such a crisp, clean edge. Not being able to get clean recordings is holding me back terribly.
Last two question, what video editing program do you use, and do you do any "special" editing to eliminate light spill or are the results crisp as-is?

@@gavinwells9989 The video I directed you to will answer many of those questions and even show you where the lights go. But adding more light to an improperly lit greenscreen will not help that much. It will probably hurt, actually.
I use Final Cut Pro with the keying software that comes with the program.
