    Everyone else: The bench sould be about this size
    Shelby: I engineered a design process, that calculates the optimal size of the bench by taking account of specific values in the universe

    12:35 That is literally my favorite scene in that movie - it kicks off such a triumphant emotional upswell following the disaster.
    And I was smiling at your spreadsheet - I did the exact same thing when I put about 130 feet of baseboards in my house. Really helped to manage materials and the cut list!

    I'm so impressed. I've only tinkered with Blender. Well done. And, yes, a miter saw would have speed things for you. I always love your videos.

    Here's a suggestion - make 4 diagonal cuts to knock the corners off that bottom shelf. Your shins will thank you!

    Considering the amount of cuts required it would have been a better use of your time to buy a circular saw and speed square or cheap mitre saw, or hell borrow one from someone! The T nuts are a neat addition though, threaded inserts could have been used too. I like it, sturdy af

    Look at Mr High Roller with a solid wood desk. How much all that wood caust you?

      @@mayshack He said $400 for both, which felt a bit high to me, but who knows RN with prices. Personally, I would've gone for white melamine LDF panel. Premade finish for about 2/3 cost as blank MDF, about the same after you add in heat edging; plus it's a touch lighter. But, it's usually an order in thing, not always in stock, and not always obvious if you're not aware it exists.

    nice design. have you considered mounting some power strips? obviously you have your bench supply but might be good to have a long harbor freight along the back side so you can leave everything plugged in when you swap them. great video series so far

    Great job on the work benches! I really like your design and they turned out fantastic! I like using plywood for the tops of mine, but it's really down to personal preference and how hard your going to be on the surface.
    I may take a few of your design ideas when i need to build benches again. I really like how you made yours all bolt together, it really makes them more practical in the long term.

    Shelby, dude, you REALLY need a lift table. The whole point of a lift table is so you can move things too heavy to lift by yourself. One will do for getting all those heavy Data General components in and out of the rack and on and off the workbench (just remember, moving things means putting the table to the lowest position so you don't have to worry about it tipping over) and you might even be able to use a few lighting mechanisms to move the components up the stairs on your own. Yes, it'll take forever, but that's why you build the lift table's drive mechanism so you can drive it with a cordless drill. (I'm not overly fond of cordless tools, but a cordless drill is one of those tools that even those of us who hate wireless anything see the huge advantages of.)

    I recommend covering the top of the MDF with a adhesive 1 foot by 1 foot vinyl tiles. Hardware stores carry a few styles. However, varieties of styles can be found online. They will provide padding for the equipment and the MDF, they can wiped clean, and you can replace them.

    For moving the Data General parts consider a small scissor lift on wheels to allow you to slide the part onto the desk. Or perhaps an engine hoist?

    Another fun part with the AT&T PC6300: If you have the keyboard too close to the front, you can accidentally knock it back and have the cord hit the reset button on the front of the case.

    Not bad! Good thought given to how they break down in the future. As a professional stagehand who deals in things that break apart for a living, I approve! Personally I would've just gone with carriage bolts and wing nuts with fender washers over those expensive t-nuts to save money for something so rarely disassembled (also leaves a nice smooth bolt on the table outside), but we use both methods in my line of work. 6 in one, 1/2 dozen in the other. Stay safe! Thanks for letting us in your head process! 〜(꒪꒳꒪)〜

    They are six tables 80x140cm (~31.5x55") and two 80x80cm (31.5x31.5"). Paid 230€ for all together. Steel frame, formicatopped with wooden trim.

    they make special little carts with raisable platforms designed for moving heavy rackmount units, but they're pretty expensive. might be worth looking into second hand or DIY though for dealing with the data generals.

  • @UpLateGeek

    Great job on the workbench! I did a similar thing with my desk, although I used FreeCAD instead of Blender. I'm glad I did because it was originally designed to use 4040 aluminium T-slot, and it worked out to almost $1,000 worth of the stuff before I added the mounting hardware. Needless to say I decided that was way out of my budget, so I kind-of gave up on the project. I should probably just switch to cheaper aluminium square tube.
    Anyway, I like the use of T nuts in your bench. There's nothing worse than going to reassemble it and realising there's a nut missing!

    Regarding storing the second workbench... Have you considered going multi-layer?
    consider how much wall space is taken up by the two bin racks that were behind you for much of this video.
    what if you stored the extra workbench behind those.
    Your bins would be out in front, still easily accessed, and since everything is wheeled, rearranging things should take no time at all.

    Goes together kind of like a bed frame. Nice!
    Definitely invest in some power tools and watch some episodes of New Yankee Workshop if you plan on building any more furniture, though. The long-term time savings is worth the upfront cost.

    • @needfuldoer4531
      @needfuldoer4531 2 роки тому

      It's about using the right tool for the job. I've used a hand saw when it was faster and easier than getting the power tools set up for just a few miter cuts. For a bunch of square cuts through 2x4s though? An inexpensive (or secondhand) circular saw is a small, worthwhile investment to save yourself a lot of time and effort.

    I'm kind of surprised you start new projects like other people change their underwear without getting the basics done first. Everything looks so dirty and unorganized in your office. After around 1-2 months of moving in I would expect you to have everything settled a little more. I feel somehow uncomfortable watching this rather messy looking office. Do you have any plans on tidying up your rooms in the foreseeable future?

      I've heard of these fabled beings that could move in without having boxes of "stuff" for months afterwards, but I don't know if I've ever met one.
      If you're a consumer, your life is probably fairly tidy. If you're a creator of any kind, your environment is probably chaos incarnate, because there's just not enough space or storage in the world to neatly classify every bit and bob you have lying around. Nor time to organize it.

    • @JessicaFEREM
      @JessicaFEREM 2 роки тому

      @@nickwallette6201 ADHD does that to ya, You can't have everything clean because you are never thinking about it and are always doing something new. plus cleaning it would require that you know where everything is and adjust yourself to that.

    • @Cherijo78
      @Cherijo78 2 роки тому +1

      You have to remember he's doing it all himself right now. That's a lot of stuff to move and set up alone.
      As someone who literally works in an industry where moving things into place and organizing it all is my job (pro stagehand 25+ years) sure, he's not very efficient at it. I've spotted several rookie moves that could've been done better/more efficiently/etc. That's ok with me. Everyone has their own learning curve. It's his channel, his gear, his background. It's ok that it doesn't match my experience or methods. He gets to do it his way. Relax. Enjoy the process!

  • @tarstarkusz

    • @nickwallette6201
      @nickwallette6201 2 роки тому +4

      That's the deal right now. He said as much before the move, that his time is going to be 100% occupied with moving from the old house to the new house, and everything from the storage units into the new office space. He's just posting the vlogs as a "behind the scenes" series while all that work happens anyway.
      Just be patient, he's almost there.

    • @Cherijo78
      @Cherijo78 2 роки тому

      I wouldn't consider a basic $50 circ saw expensive versus the time spent on a miter box. That said, if that's what you have... *Shrugs*. In particular, if you're not used to cutting clean lines with a circ saw, a miter box is safer.
