Some of your choices are not just music to soothe your soul: they are among the greatest albums of all time: "Odyessey and Oracle," "Village Green Preservation Society," "Days of Future Passed," "Groovin'," and "Pet Sounds."
Donovan was a super star! I still listen to his music just about everyday.
saw dononvan flower stage concert albert hall london 68..remember first concert i ever went to.
After the Indian retreat 1967 I can't remember if it was Paul or John that said maybe half of The White Album was Donovan. He was teaching them guitar tricks and still only 21.
I love Forever Changes by Love. It's a great album and I think it's on the same musical level than Pet Sounds and Sgt. Peppers.
A definite masterpiece!
I was going to say the same.
I "discovered" Love and Forever Changes about a year ago. Glad i did.
The only complaint I have with Caroline No is that it's too short. I love the live version from In Concert with the flute solo between verses.
It was listening to Sergio Mendes and Brazil 66 on the radio when I was a small child of maybe six or seven years old in the 60s that fueled my love for Brazilian bossa nova and jazz today -- some 55 years later. Thanks for adding the group to your list!
Thanks for adding Magic Garden by 5th Dimension. It truly is a classic album.
OUTSTANDING !!! Please make more videos like this one. You're turning people on to a bunch of great music!
The soft parade ♥ the doors that whole album puts you somewhere else. Just like the doors w/ out jim(other voices and full circle).
"Begin" by The Millennium from 1968. Definitely. Everytime. It's on par with "Revolver" and "Odessey and Oracle" :D
an unknown star album of the late 60's
I found The Millennium on CD by chance. It is One of my favorites.
I knew about the Zombies, mostly their singles, but never really dug into their albums.
What a blast the discovery of Odyssey and Oracle was for me. You're right, it holds up to Pet Sounds, which I love every seconds of.
Thanks for sharing it!
Oh, and The Butcher's Tale is amazing, what a song, really!
Pet Sounds in stereo is WAY more enjoyable to me than the mono.
I presume most people know that Brian was deaf in one ear, and that is why hw perceived music in mono.
O&o zombie hits the spot w Colin's vocals. Mmmmmmm.
Super fun. I am enough of a nerd to find the Searchers comment funny. I love all these records.
That got by most people. Thanks for watching!
Great list. I have some of those records and you turned me on to some that I was unaware of. I would love to have seen one of the first two Country Joe and the Fish records. They are amazing and easy to relax to.
What a string of albums this was, some famous, some very obscure. I played Wheatstraw Suite a lot in the autumn of '68 but never knew anyone else who had heard it. The Magic Garden was the 5th Dimensions greatest album and a Jim Webb extravaganza, with all those surprising micro bridges between the songs. Sunshine Superman was the new Donovan of 1966 and full of allusions to Tolkien, fairy tales and Cass Elliot. The zombies monster hit, Time of the Season was a callback to their original late '64 sound on an album that was pure 1967 and so Beatlesque. Everything here was great.
My mom liked Sergio Mendes which put him right into old peoples music for me.
Village Green is right up there with Ogden's Nut Gone Flake as one of my all time favorite albums. Odessey And Oracle is right up there as well. Hung Up On A Dream is one of the greatest records of all time.
Caroline No will always be my fav song Brain ever wrote
Absolutely love Celeste from Sunshine Superman and Animal Farm from Village Green.
Also love anything from the 1970s Philadelphia Soul sound
I like that you play snippets of music while you discuss, less boring than some other You Tubers just talking. I sometimes think some You Tubers can have an over inflated view of themselves!
Joni Mitchell's debut Song to a Seagull (1968) I would include.
Great selection of albums.
Love your sense of humor! "Second best band to come out of Liverpool. The first of course being Gerry & the Pacemakers." Your videos are great.
'Scuse me, please...what 'bout The Rutles, mate!!!
Another more subtle joke (I hope it's a joke) is how the video (01:01) shows "Caroline No" as being the first song on Pet Sounds, not the last, and "God Only Knows" as appearing in the middle of side one instead of at the beginning of side two.
Another excellent episode. Had never heard of the Stevie Wonder instrumental album before - need to check that out.
Enjoyable as ever Matt. Good selection. Some of my favourites feature inc Pet Sounds, Village Green, Odessey and Oracle and Rascals. The one other i'd mention is Forever Changes by Love. To me it's a classic full stop but could live in this category.
Yes, a couple people have mentioned Forever Changes. Thanks for the comment!
Thanks for sharing this. Donovan is perfect background music. Thanks for mentioning Village Green by The Kinks! I also love Muswell Hillbillies
What a coincidence, you've mentioned several of my all-time favorites here. I guess "soul soothing" music is my favorite genre!
I got the see the Rascals ii concert.
You're hitting me where I live. Great episode.
Excellent choices here. You’ve got another album behind you on the wall that would be great within this context too, The Left Banke Walk Away Renee/Pretty Ballerina. One of the most chill albums of the era!
The zombies album, every track is amazing! They had so many songs that should of been hits after hits. Do something on the band the lollipops, I would love to know more about them.
I stumbled upon the Dillard"s LP years back and was blown away. Still a favorite. Thanks for the suggestions!
Big fan of Jimmy Webb. Gonna check out that 5th Dimensions album.
Great list! The only band I'd have added would be The Free Design.
11:18 - 'Next band we have, The Searchers... The 2nd best band from Liverpool. First band obviously being... Gerry & The Pacemakers.' I nearly fell of my chair, laughing so hard on this remark. :-)
Wow, it seems we must be somehow related... my musical tastes seem to line up so much with yours. I'm enjoying all your videos! This list was great!
I remember seeing the Dillards album, and thinking it was too Country for me. Young & dumb. My ex introduced me to Donovan, I liked his non-Rock vibes. My ex's BFF introduced me to that Jefferson Airplane LP, but I never got it. Much later I was Very impressed by Lyle Lovett's version of Friend of the Devil.
Very interesting video. Know about half these LPs well but will consider the others for a listen.
Great choices, Matt. I'd also add the albums "I Can Make It With You" by the Pozo-Seco Singers; "Realization" by Johnny Rivers; "Claudine" by Claudine Longet; "The Voice of Scott McKenzie" by Scott McKenzie; "Ascending" by Orpheus; "Neon" by The Cyrkle; "Distant Shores" by Chad & Jeremy; and -- well, I could go on. If "soothing" music is the desire, there ya go. And I agree with the commenter below about Love's "Forever Changes." Some beautiful songs there. In fact, it's my favorite '60s album after "Rubber Soul" (US version).
Great show
I like these kinds of shows because even though I grew up during this time and heard some of this music, I never purchased most of the albums because I was too young and was mostly hooked on the Beatles.
Thanks for the comment, Lorne!
Love your choice. The 'London Festival Orchestra' may simply have been Decca's in-house stable of musicians given a nice name. Not sure but I think Justin Hayward said as much
By recording with the LFO, the Moody Blues got the clearance to make another album, and do it with the best recording equipment available to show off Decca's sound recordings possibilities.
LOVE Pet Sounds.. Great Stuff. A big fan of the Moody Blues - seeing Justin Hayward tonight. Love looking at all of the albums as I used to be a album collector. Brings back lots of memories... Over 1500 in the day.... Thanks for another good video...
Going through all your videos. The Beatles led me here. I've subscribed, and find your vids informative, they are well produced, and I love when you bring out a cocktail (like me), and find it like hanging around with my old (departed) buddy. You have a knack for being very friendly and I like that. Please continue doing this. I've watched around 30 of your vids, and have enjoyed every single one!!!!!
Thank you, Michael. I have more coming so stay tuned!
You can bet I will!
Love this stuff!
Really great recommendations there Matt, you are making it easy to discover some masterful music.
Matt is like my brother from another mother, with tastes so similar it's scary. Great job.
New Glarus Spotted Cow awesome!🍻
"You Better Run" was a leftover single that didn't quite fit on the "Groovin'" album. I prefer "A Girl Like You" to "How Can I Be Sure?" by a hair. I would have included Gene Cornish's "I Don't Love You Anymore."
Matt, Another thought provoking, memory stirring episode. My own preferences tend much more to the rock side rather than soothing. But two 60s albums that popped into my head are Joni Mitchell's first and Bert Jansch's "Birthday Blues" which sounds like a blend of his solo stuff and Pentangle. I entered college in the fall of '66 and brought along PET SOUNDS and soon acquired REVOLVER - two of the best albums ever released according to Mojo and other mags. The guy in the room next door thought PET SOUNDS was piffle and played me Paul Butterfield's "East-West." Throw in Donovan's "Sunshine Superman," and I could live, thrive actually, on four albums alone.
Thank you, Wylie!
lovely review, thanks.
I missed this video when it was first posted, you've made some great selections! I understand that every generation claims to have had the best music but I don't think that any decade's music represents its contemporary zeitgeist as well as the music from the mid to late 1960's.
In 1966, Pet Sounds, Blond On Blond, Revolver, Parsley, Sage, Rosemary & Thyme, Sunshine Superman, Fresh Cream, Fifth Dimension, etc. Followed up in 1967 by Sgt. Pepper, Days Of Future Past, Traffic, The Doors, Magical Mystery Tour, Are You Experienced, Axis: Bold As Love, Disraeli Gears, Forever Changes, Strange Days, Surrealistic Pillow, Their Satanic Majesties Request, etc. The impact of these albums can't be overstated.
To have been there and to have been young at that time, with those albums affecting your consciousness, along with the immense social changes was something that the following decades didn't have. All music feeds the soul and entertains but the music from the 1960's did more than that, it enlightened and brought people together in a way which may never be repeated.
Sounds great! Sergio Mendes Brasil '66... right on.
Nice list!! I would also suggest the Troggs "Love is all Around" and the Cowsills "I love the Flower Girl". The mighty mighty Velvet Underground had a soft side in songs such as "Pale Blue Eyes" and "I'll be Your Mirror." Lyrically and musically they rank up there near the top. If you have a chance listen to the unreleased gems "It's Alright the Way that you Live" and the majestic street breakup song, "Not that Sorry". Finally the Beatles had an amazing knack for soft rock with too many gems to name here. Let's just say that "Here There and Everywhere" is only tip of the Beatle iceberg of easy listening gems.
Nice!
Nice idea!
As always...an excellent job bringing out fantastic record reviews..I love to se the album configurations..it seems every episode the lps are in a different order..love it to death..great job
The Warner's 'Schlagers!' compilation. BTW, 'Caroline No's lyrics were originally 'Carol, I know...' Murry Wilson insisted that lyricist Tony Asher settle for 1/4 of the royalties he should have received.
2:55 My favorite 5th Dimension LP! If you have an album collection of the 5th Dimension, I'd sure love to see it...hint, hint.
In regards to The Magic Garden, anytime I can hear Marilyn McCoo’s voice is a happy time for me.
Lani Hall from Brasil '66 married Herb Alpert co-founder of A&M Records.
I read somewhere that the doors were trying to do their own sgt pepper with that album
A Gift From A Flower to a Garden and The Odysee and the Oracle and Odessa and Postcard ~ Mary Hopkin
The Beach Boys album that is really relaxing is Friends. But you can't go wrong with Pet Sounds.
Moby Grape always in the background Matt - let's have 'em! Donovan's Fat Angel done by Airplane.
Yes, I will be excited to do the Grape. Coming up, the Zombies, Byrds, and a Get Back Album That Never Was, so stay tuned!
Sugar and Spice by The Cryan' Shames is a great version.
Good choices, and, of course, the lettering on Grateful Dead's AMERICAN BEAUTY also can be read as AMERICAN REALITY, which is pretty neat.......man.
GREAT video. I have a similar concept for my radio show (THIS IS SKI LODGE) but I go towards a more Sunshine Pop and Soft Rock vibe but definitely incorporate some of this music into that show! Thanks for always keeping things interesting, Matt. Keeps us coming back for more!
I did this video in the early covid days and I may do more. I'll check out your show because I love sunshine pop. Thanks for watching!
My choice is the Moody Blues 'Knights in White Satin'.
I was going to comment donovan and the kinks but you ended up putting them on the list! I do love "Days of Future Past" too.
I could've added so many more! Thanks for the comment.
Please make a video about the 5th dimension's music from the late 60's.
They are on my short list so stay tuned!
Philwit and Pegasus was also an interest. By mark wirtz.
Glen Campbell - Wichita Lineman
What about The Who's TOMMY?
I love Days of future passed. What about Chad and Jeremy Clyde "Of cabbages and kings"
Spotted Cow. You’re either in WI or you smuggled some over the border. I’ve smuggled my share of New Glarus beers home.
You know your beer!
@@popgoesthe60s52 huge craft beer nut. My dad is also from WI, so I get over that way to visit family. Never ventured down to New Glarus yet to visit the brewery, but it is on my bucket list. Once all this pandemic stuff ends.
Really getting into your channel, the choice of music and the background info are great! and by the way wasn't the best band out of Liverpool the Beatles or am I mistaken.
Ah, you caught my little joke! Thanks for watching my videos - plenty more to come!
What music soothes your soul? Add your list here!
@Heather Knight Great choices too. Thanks for sharing your likes!
The Association, Free Design, Sagittarius, The Yellow Balloon and Love
Sergio Mendes and Brasil 66, Spanky and our Gang, Herb Alpert to name a few. Not my typical choice of music, just when I need to have something different to decompress to. Usually when nothing else will. I see you added Sergio Mendes as well. Nice addition with the Rascals and the Searchers, Zombies.
Sticking to the 60’s I’d say any of the Kingston Trio’s albums released between 1960-1964.🙂
I love nearly all of your list. Three to consider:
1. Margo Guryan's TAKE A PICTURE
2. The Band's THE BAND
3. Antônio Carlos Jobim's WAVE
I might be the only person in America to say this, but? I’m no fan of pet Sounds. Genius? Maybe, but I’d rather listen to car songs. But that’s me. I had that Dillard record. It left my collection during the great purge. But to my experience, anything on the elektra 4000 series is worth collecting. Didn’t Doug firm Dillard and Clark with Gene Clark from the Byrds? Oh Sunshine Superman is one of my all time favorites. Season of the witch is a stone classic. But front to back it’s a keeper. American Beauty is the only dead record I kept. Village Green! The Kinks really were able to morph with what was hot at the time. The Rascals drummer is a vastly underrated musician. I like how can I be sure. But? My favorite is you better run.
You are not alone in your assessment of Pet Sounds. When I do my Beach Boys series, I will attempt to explain the divide on this album. Thanks, Earhead.
Quite a few members of the record buying public agreed with you as PET SOUNDS did not sell very well. Even Mike Love disliked it - which is maybe why I love it.
it's such a shame village green came out the exact same day as the white album, i feel like if it had been just a month apart then it would've been instantly recognized as the classic it is, along with their other works like something else and arthur getting more legacy recognition
They weren't even on my radar during that period. Had to be Doors or something "heavy" man 😝 Luckily, I caught up later in the 70's, and Village Green is def in my top 10 all time favorite albums. God Save The Kinks! 😻
Oh man, thank you for not playing the Days of Future Past closer. Almost the song that killed this record., not because it's bad, but because nobody plays anything else.....from their entire catalogue!
Have you done a video of spooky tooth?
Village Green is a great album but I think Arthur is their masterpiece. It has great songs and it's a little bit better than their previous albums.
Yeah, they had so much great stuff come out in a short period of time - especially from 1968-69. I feel that Arthur has always been overlooked with all the accolades going to Village Green. Thanks for watching!
@@popgoesthe60s52 Village Green barely sold at all. THEE critical fave was ARTHUR - John Mendelssohn leading the critics in praise. Me? My favorite is SOMETHING ELSE, but it all depends on whose ears does the listening.
How about an episode examining the early roots of progressive rock in the 1960s? A lot of prog rock took off in the 1970s but (depending on your definition) there were plenty of early precursors to the genre in the latter 1960s. Certainly the Hot Rats Zappa album qualifies as almost early fusion but Quicksilver Messenger Service, the German group Can, early Yes and there are plenty of other examples.
I will probably be continuing my discussion on psychedelic music, which may lead into more pre-prog talk. I have a huge to-do list! Thanks for the suggestion.
@@popgoesthe60s52 Awesome! Sorry, one last suggestion: your top pop/movie instrumentals of the 60s.
@@rdwwdr3520 That is a good one. I do have some film-based videos on my list including some soundtracks so stay tuned!
@@popgoesthe60s52: I’ve got a suggestion - have nothing whatsoever to do with prog rock!
IMO the sixties music is about exciting and ground breaking ideas in Pop / Rock music. This Soothe the Soul idea was lame when I followed the bands / groups at the time. Sergio Mendes was for my parents, not my friends and me. I know you are looking in the rearview mirror but I had to say my piece. I lived through the times and followed the Beatles since Love me do on Radio Luxemburg in November '62. EMI pushed them like crazy and they were a big deal suddenly in the media if not the singles charts. Keep up the good work otherwise.
Soothing music? You forgot Attila!

Vanilla fudge's version of season of the witch is better than Donavons in my opinion
