Mr. Mike, thank you SOOO much for your channel. My husband and I recently purchased a JD 317 (series 2 Kohler engine) with a snowblower attachment AND a tiller attachment. The guy we purchased it from said he bought it with the tiller attachment but never used it--he only used the snowblower. So, we were able to see the hydraulics lift the snowblower, but now that we have disconnected the snowblower, we cannot figure out how to attach the tiller to get it to lift & lower using the hydraulics. We have everything hooked up except for the lift bar. Can you tell us (or show us) where the lift bar attaches under the tractor in order to actually lift/lower the tiller? Any information you can provide on this would be greatly appreciated!!
If you look up through the hole that's cut in the back plate you will see a piece sticking down with a hole in it for a pin that's where it hooks it sticks down instead of up
Hey Mike, love the channel! I bought an old hydraulic tiller and am wondering how to attach it to my tractor. I assume I need corresponding attach hardware on the back of my tractors (317, 318) but don’t know what that hardware is or where to find it.
@@richardjensen2380 it's probably a three-point hitch one so you'll need one of those it's made to run on only the open frames not a 317. Some of them require a rear PTO and some of them have their own hydraulic pump that runs off the front PTO of the engine.
Thank you for the quick reply! My tiller is like the one shown in this video: ua-cam.com/video/v5Awv7b8BlM/v-deo.htmlsi=x2gJyRPOq6kLaF5S. It’s difficult to tell what the hardware on the back of the tractor is.
Do you know what size battery these mowers use? I just picked up a 1981 JD 317 today and really hadn't looked too much into it yet. Just noticed you didn't mention that in the video. (my 4yo is in here and loud so it's possible I missed it). Regardless, I liked the video. I am probably going to try and find a snow blower for this 317. I have a 210 with a snow blower and the 317 just seems better to be honest.
I liked the video couple of questions since i have the same John Deere 317 first off on inner hydraulics lever wont move don't know why but the outside one does and have you done a carb rebuilt on the carburetor as well and my PTO isn't working properly when I engage it the engine wants to stall out its not the switch I replaced it. Idid check the gap on the PTO and set it at 19 thousands all the positions if you have any suggestions to help me it would be much appreciated. 👍
Hydraulic lever is probably just rusted. The carbs are easy to rebuild, I've done tins of them. Turning on your pto likely kills the engine because there's a safety not happy
So bought it back in late March and it ran fine went on a short vacation middle of April come back and it's got now crank to it at all. I'm sure the battery is dead atm also
@@mikestarcher The outer lifts/lowers the deck, and the inner is for front hydraulics . Oh and also the outer one would be for the angle in a blade if you have power angle.
I just bought a 317. Mine has a single cylinder 17HP kohler and all others I’ve seen online are twin cylinder 17HP. Did any of them come with single cylinder kohler 17HP?
I've been having an issue with mine running at Idle for like 5 minutes, once I throttle up it dies very quickly. Let it sit over night, fires right back up and does the same crap again... Any ideas?
I have an 80/81 317 model, my parents got it and my dad never changed the oil. I’m trying to get it going, where can I find the oil and fuel filter on the mower?
@@GRADGRAD-jq9nk that's two different issues you've described. Letting off the key it should have power still, meaning your key switch isn't good. Unless you're accidentally letting off of another safety at the same time.
With oil? Depends how far over you go. If just a little it in my opinion is better for it, buy on the other hand if you go way over full oil will get into the cylinders and start burning oil
Mike I do know that if the engine oil has not been changed it loses all of its additives in it and the valves will or the lifters will start to get sticky or even the wrong oil

No, they have no down pressure.
