  • Heading into the 2024 season, it was viewed as a make or break year for Marcus Freeman. The Irish lost some key players from the 2023 team but replaced them via the transfer portal or through in-house development. There were high expectations for the team and those only got higher after they beat Texas A&M in College Station. But then the season almost got derailed as the Irish would be upset by NIU at home in week two. In previous years, this would have eliminated Notre Dame from College Football Playoff contention but with the expanded playoff, it meant the Fighting Irish were still alive. They would proceed to dominate most of their opponents and were gifted with a home game for the 1st round of the college football playoff. This is how Marcus Freeman turned Notre Dame’s season around from a disaster to a magical one. This is the road to the college football playoff, Notre Dame edition.

Side note for those who don't know: Miami and Notre Dame were originally scheduled to play this year, but Miami cancelled the game because they had scheduled one too many out of conference games. Notre Dame replaced Miami on their schedule with Army.

For Notre Dame, especially. I grew up near South Bend. This program and especially its fans folded like wet cardboard at the first loss every year. The year they made the championship game, they pretty much *had* to win out, because most years, the team would go like 7-0 only to drop their first game and end up 8-4 or something. (Well, also there were a lot of teams that went like 10-0 before clearly dropping out of the top two, but Bama was the only team that won out, so they still could've made a case among the swarm of 11-1s if they didn't give up for once.)
I still don't know what to make of Freeman, especially since I think the team has underperformed its talent in the start of his tenure, but he deserves credit for changing the quitter culture at ND, as well as the team playing better after NIU, of course.

Disrespectful to IU. I think you're crediting ND with two too many TDs. I still think Notre Dame's defense is too much for IU to figure out, but IU has a really good defense in its own right, and both teams are better at running than passing. IU's a little undersized on the defensive line, and I think that's probably the difference maker. This is going to be the kind of physical, hard-nose football that oldheads complain never gets played anymore.

@ I can’t take IU seriously when their best win is a 7-5 Michigan and they almost lost, then the next week they got blown out by Ohio State

Thank you for this summary of Notre Dame's season. Indiana should be a good challenge for the Irish with both teams winning nearly all their games, and it being an in-state rivalry of sorts! Notre Dame should outlast the Hoosiers in this one . . . 31-17.

Riley Leonard was real bad passing early in the year. He is only an average passer now, but that is a big improvement. The key is his legs. His power running style actually a great compliment to the 2 ND RBs who both are HR hitters. With Love and Price at RB and Leonard Notre Dame has become an Elite Rushing Offense. NIU won in week 2 because Riley was terrible and he admitted such. Also we were telegraphing alot of our running plays which NIU coach gave us a heads up after the game. NIU is a good rush defense so between combination of that, knowing our plays and the fact that Riley was terrible at this point of the season passing and couldn't even make "easy" throws led to NIU winning low scoring game. These problems have all been corrected and ND is real threat in these playoffs

I’m going to ND IU with my brother and his wife, the only of two times I went with them ND lost to Stanford 14-16 and Northern Illinois 14-16. So, if Notre Dame loses to IU 14-16, it’s on me

That is EXACTLY the same score I called!
      Notre Dame - 38
      Indiana - 17
Somewhat close in the 1st Half. Then, Notre Dame dominates in the 2nd half. The Offensive and Defensive Lines will be unstoppable in the 2nd Half, and the Irish will get at least 2 turnovers.

ridiculous comment. They are ranked in the top 3 of pretty much every computer model, they are ranked higher in polls than their seeding. They pass the computer algorythms, they pass the eye test, they are 11-1. People act like NIU is trash can too which is ridiculous.

A team with a single loss at the beginning of the year that can be shown to be a lapse and not definitive of that team, with a top 10 strength of record, the highest margin of victory over its opponents in all of fbs, six wins over bowl eligible teams which is second only to Texas... That's the problem with the system this year? Seriously?
People who don't actually pay attention year in and year out to bowl games and championships in football whether it be the old BCS or the older cfp or the newer cfp, say stuff like this. Because teams have gotten into the championship picture with inexplicable losses to bad teams pretty much forever.
Also let's completely disregard the other teams that got in and somehow try to claim that conference champions over disastrous conferences this year somehow actually belong. Teams with worse strength of schedule because they are in a conference that somehow makes them worthy. Pretending every year that teams that win conferences you can't even locate are on the same playing level.
Friendly reminder in the 2020 season, Notre Dame was forced to play as an ACC member went undefeated in conference play losing only in the championship to a still prime dabo Swinney Clemson tigers. You know because conferences are so tough or something.

Playoffs should be neutral sites. If not, the home team should be required to distribute equal amount of tickets to the visiting school. These are NOT regular season, stack the deck with a hostile crowd games. NCAA Basketball tournament (men’s) is played on neutral floors. Football playoffs should be on neutral fields, no matter who is playing. This goes for every game, whether ND-IU, Ohio State-Tennessee or anyone else. The seedlings are sufficient advantage as it is. 31-21, IU.
