In this video Tayson takes the Outdoor Vitals LoftTek™ TopQuilt and tests the nature of the insulation against moisture. Many backpackers fear down sleeping bags due to moisture failure, but the LoftTek™ synthetic insulation could be the perfect alternative.
Watch as Tayson soaks the bag in water then sleeps in it to test the integrity of the insulation when wet!

I have the quilt in my shopping cart as I type this message. Is the 15 degree rating comfort level or lower limit as I tend to sleep a little on the cooler side. I did use a competitors quilt in late summer on a backpack. It is rated to 30 degree and the temp got down to 32. It did get on the cool side and my sleep wasn't all that great. Really want to make the switch to quilts as I toss and turn a lot at night and always get knotted up in a sleeping bag.
Our temperature ratings are lower comfort ratings. So if you sleep on the cooler side, you might want to add 5 to 10 degrees to the listed rating in order to sleep comfortably. So you'd probably sleep very comfortably in a 15 degree quilt on a 20-25 degree night.
Will you guys reproduce the OV Light series?
You can find a few still on Amazon.
"The camera settings make it hard to see the water that's on the outside of this."....no bro, that thing was SOAKED. LOL Great video.
thanks for wathcing!
I think that it may have that wet suit effect. In any case I'm wanting to gear up for my planned 2020 PCT. I think I'll try this. I've section hiked A & B. Laguna and Jacinto areas may be challenging. I think it will work. If I get it and it does well. I'll continue with it through colder sections. We'll see.
you crazy, boy! :-) Definitely strongly considering synthetic now.
Very good review. You really do deserve the CEO of the Year award for these tests and the honest feedback.
Thanks!
Good video, it's cool to see the one of the bosses do the test.
Dude super awesome test wow that is incredible
As a person who sweats probably 2-3 times as much as most people I have always stayed away from down. You may have finally found a good alternative for people like me. I will be looking forward to other things like puffy jackets as well.
We will be releasing puffy jackets in LoftTek insulation this fall!
How is the compresability of the synthetic top quilt?
Brave soul and your sacrifice is appreciated
I couldn't hear anything you were saying over my beard envy.
Awesome to see this style of gear review. Impressive.
Thanks for a great test.
I’ve been fortunate and not had a sleeping bag get as wet as your test bag. This is an extreme test and I’m glad you did it. I didn’t see your test on the Storm Tech bag but I’ll try to look it up. Thank you for posting this video.
Thanks for watching!
You're definitely crazy but you're starting to bring me around. I'm looking at your jacket now. Cheers
Let us know if you have any questions while you are looking!
@@TaysonWhittaker should I worry about wet polyester smell overtime compared to nylon ?
light and warm good combination
yes! do it with another down bag
This test was NOT a down bag...it was synthetic.
Taking one for the team! You really believe in your products, and the quality shows.
I feel like you mean quality
sprint702 yup! Damn spell correct.....
I’m sure glad you did that test so I don’t have to. I love all my Outdoor Vitals gear. Thanks for making and testing such great gear!
Thanks for the support!
I have to say I have been looking at y’all gear for awhile and I hear great stuff about y’all on the AT trail and after seeing u put urself through that I will be a upcoming customer and get a underquilt for my hammock...u guys rock and thanks for the view...oh and one thing y’all are crazy lol 👍
Thanks for checking us out!
Great test and video. When is your LoftTek jacket coming out!?
October/November
I bought one of their items. I will buy one of every item they have for sale if this dude shave that beard off.
Hey Mike, that is fantastic news! Here's a video for you: ua-cam.com/video/dyy45uL01rE/v-deo.html
How would my new Stormloft 15 do in a test like this? The filling is water resistant but that isn't defined anywhere.
StormLoft is down that has been DWR treat on the down level. But it is not completely waterproof. Though it would perform better than regular untreated down, the StormLoft down would still struggle to keep you insulated, especially when compared to a synthetic like LoftTek. If you completely soak a StormLoft down bag, it would fail. But if it just gets a little wet, then the StormLoft down will be helpful for keeping you warm/dry.
Hey Tayson. I can attest to this based on my own unplanned test. On a canoe trip out to Blake Island in the Puget Sound with our scout troop one of the canoes tipped. My bag was in that boat and during the tipping the dry bag my pack was in tore and my gear got wet including my new Loftek quilt. Once we got the island I laid it out in my tent since it was sprinkling so it wasnt going to dry outside. It was damp when I went to bed that night but it was plenty warm and I slept great. So happy I brought my OV quilt instead of my down quilt.
My iphone did not fare nearly as well...
Glad you were able to stay warm! Sorry to hear about your phone, though...
Anything that is wet is going to experience evaporative cooling so you have to expect some loss of heat.
Thank you for this video and test!
Thanks for the insight and for watching!
Is that one refilled water or did you just carry like 10 water bottles?
Definitely had to refill the water bottle in the stream. The water was freezing!
dunk it the stream and get on with it.
The depth of that stream would have made the quilt incredibly muddy had we just dunked it. But otherwise, that would have been a great alternative!
Super super cool test, thanks!
Thanks for watching!
Great to see you testing your gear. When I upgrade my sleeping bag, definitely getting OV gear!!!!!!!
