    First glance was the chocolate wine! All the canned goods in the ball jars look delicious and I know hours upon hours were spent cooking all of them. Years back, my mother canned like that, teaching us to do the same, and the jars were stored in the cool basement. Happy memories! God Bless!

    It's a few years later now, but I found this video and really feel you have done an excellent job on your wonderfully organized and displayed root cellar/pantry... I am new to making a pantry but I bought the same kind of shelving as you show here and I have converted a large closet into the mini-pantry... I hope I can do well with it... I have just got a pressure canner and some jars and only done up a few things so far... chicken, ground beef and sirloin steak in jars... I have a lot of catching-up to do... better late than never... I am all alone at age 75, but I will do my best to get prepared for who knows what may come in future.

    😍😍😍 My dream come true!! I'm an avid canner, but we don't have. basement or cellar or even a pantry so my jars are stacked as carefully as possible on one shelving unit and of course stacked all around it. You work with the space you've got :) Just found your channel today and I'm loving it!

    • @unemployedredneckhillbilly2023
      @unemployedredneckhillbilly2023  7 років тому +2

      As long as you live in an area with no earth tremors like I do it is easy to stack everything on shelves. It also allows me to rotate them easily to use the oldest jars first and have a place to store the empty jars safely. We started out with one shelving unit like you and a small garden. Both the garden and root have slowly expanded over the years to meet our needs for the taste of homegrown food that is better then anything commercially available. Thanks for watching my videos.

      Thanks. Buy a ball blue book for the best info on safe home canning. Not everything requires a pressure caner. It goes by acid content and it is very easy to get started with high acid recipes in a water bath caner. Thanks for watching.

      I have to admit that I bought the cabbage from a local farm. I gave up planting cabbage because all mine always had worms and I don't use pesticides. I buy jumbo heads for less then a dollar fresh picked with no insect damage that are grown for storage and the local sauerkraut industry. Thanks for watching.

    I always come back to this video as an example for my perfect pantry. Great organizations and the things that gets me most is all the fresh and home canned products you have in there. You only have a small amount of store bought canned goods. Everything else you do! And that so exciting because I make my own cider and wine for storage, I also make my own sauerkraut, grow a big garden and I am just getting into canning for food storage. I always look back to this video for how people pantries SHOULD be. More homemade and homegrown.
    Way to much people post pantries with nothing but garbage processed food. And in an emergency that stuff with run out and then you’re done.
    You have it done right. You grown and can all your own stuff from your own garden and your own fruit trees.
    Thank you for posting this. And please do another update so we can see how it’s changed!

    Wow this is great! My father in law used to make us maple syrup but sadly he passed away two years ago. We’re moving to his home in a month or two and my mother in law is moving to a condo...but we’ve also lost some maples so we won’t be able to pick up where he left off. He left us a huge spot where he kept his garden for 37 years. I look forward to learning how to can. I’ve seen green beans done before but that’s it. We always cut our corn off the cob with the juices and put it in a crockpot with butter and let it go till a little foam develops on the edges. Then we cool it and put it in containers for the freezer. I like it much better than canned because it’s the best creamed corn in the world. I do love butternut squash but I don’t think we’d use that many or that many pumpkins. I have recently tried my hand at making sauerkraut though! Pretty proud of myself there. I’d like to make my own canned peaches and apple sauce this summer. I’ve got a peach cobbler recipe that’ll knock your socks off. I’ve been in the city for too long, but the housing crisis of 2008 ruined my dreams of moving then. We’re finally getting back to the country and I can’t wait to raise some chickens, but raw milk from a local dairy, pick apples from a friends orchard, and buy grass fed beef from a farm down the hill. Life should be pretty good after this next month or two! Thanks for this video! New subscriber!

    I love this! I wish that we had basements in the houses...here in Oklahoma. They no longer build houses with them [I heard it's because people would have major damp/mold problems] due to the weather. Not sure about it. I use my walk-in closet instead. We put an a/c vent in it for when it gets hot and during the winter time it stays pretty cool [since it's up against our garage wall that isn't insulated]. Hoping that when we sell this house and buy a new one...my husband will eventually let me build a root cellar in our backyard. *New Subscriber*

      A underground root cellar is the way to go if you have a place for it. 8 feet down and it can hold 50 degrees year round. In Oklahoma it could double as a emergency hurricane shelter. Thanks for watching.

      Unemployed Redneck Hillbilly Creations I was just thinking the same thing. In Oklahoma i have a circa 1950 keyhole storm shelter. Original owners told me it was a bomb shelter when they built it but not sure how it would save anyone. Right now it floods so I don’t use it at all. Just use a pump to get the water out.

    BTW I had watched that spice drawer/cabinet and told my hubby to make me one based on yours teehee. Love your guys' hard work!

      Once you make your own apple sauce you will never go back to store bought. Home canning many times will cost you more then buying a commercial version, but it always tastes better and is healthier for you with no chemical additives. This is the time of the year when we enjoy shopping in the root cellar. Hope your husband makes you one as my wife loves hers . Thanks for watching my videos.

    This is the first food storage video that I've seen that has a ventilation system like this, I would be interested in learning more about it if possible.... As always thanx for sharing.

      Just a simple thermo siphon system. Hot air exits the top and pulls cold air into the bottom. Vents on the north side of the house that stays cool all winter. I use a smartthings sensor to help monitor the temp and adjust the vents accordingly. Has worked great so far. Thanks for watching.

    Fantastic video! Thank you so much for taking the time and putting up with the few silly folks who go on about apples. I am hoping to start up a root cellar this next year and was really stressed about what you can and cannot put in there. Does it just come down to air circulation or do you have to worry about humidity?
    Also I love that you take the time to answer all the questions, you are a champion!

    • @unemployedredneckhillbilly2023
      @unemployedredneckhillbilly2023  5 років тому +2

      In my case the air circulation keeps the gasses from building. Items like cabbage do dry out the longer they are stored due to lack of humidity so we look at that and only stock a couple months worth. A sealed room with temp and humidity control would be best for longer storage but the cost would outweigh the savings. This works best for our needs with zero operating cost. Thanks for watching.

    Not to brag, but i have enough B&M bread, for a can, with baked beans, every saturday, for four persons, for a year. Thats a BEAUTIFUL cellar and supply. I wrote a cookbook, its on Amazon. I was the first doomsday cookbook author. Delicious Doomsday Recipes, cooking for Everyday Living. Im a little jealous of your cellar and VERY jealous of your green thumb. Our cellar is a connex, buried. Alot of work reinforcing it, because a connex only has reinforcements at the corners. My husband used 4x4 pressure treated beams every 4 feet, put a solid roof on, using downed trees, tar, plastic sheeting, covered with two feet of dirt on top. Its also our tornado and fire shelter. Thank you for sharing.

      So famous people do eat B&M bread.😉 That's the right way to make a root cellar that will hold cooler temps year round. Having a garden is the only way to know what you are eating anymore. Thanks for watching.

    Great video, nice root cellar, you must be in the Northeast, because I see Wegmans that’s where I live upstate New York, I just got into canning myself loving it hope to build a pantry like yours thanks for sharing

      Thanks. Yes, out by Rochester. We don't shop at Wegmans much anymore because their prices have skyrocketed since they remodeled our store. Canning does take a lot of time but is well worth it. A root cellar is a great place to go shopping in the winter. Thanks for watching.

    Beautiful. Well organized, clean, and we'll lit. What I especially like is that you practice common sense. Most of these videos out there are under the impression they have to fill a cellar and pantry to impress viewers.

      There's another showing it better but no video abou building it. It's just a thermosiphon system that lets hot air out the top and brings in fresh cold air through the bottom tube. I adjust the valves to control the temperature. Thanks for watching.
