One thing i've realized after being in this pandemic the past two years is that what i was doing with my channel i'm not into anymore. It has become a chore and i know that somethings have to change. I want to get back to my roots of my channel and experiment and have the courage to do so. That last tip really came at the right time. Thanks Jeven and Happy New Year!

I had an art professor that told me I over analyzed everything I made, so for that semester I had to create a new project every 7 days and just create without planning. It was a total change in my mindset for creating art, I discovered that making art is about your expression and style and what anyone else thinks is pointless, make it for you and it will always be better. After art school I tried to work in the industry and found that it killed everything I loved about the creative process and now only make things for myself.

Hi Jeven, I have to admit while I was going through my list of video content subscriptions a while back I canceled yours with others. To shorten my list. And suddenly here i am impressed again by your sincerity and insightful point of view. So in a word (I'm back) Just another guy with a camera.

So true. As an amateur UA-cam filmmaker, I find the iPhone gives me the best video for my skill level. I still have a lot to learn before using anything more advanced. I’m focusing on the storyline and limiting chaos this year.

I can’t remember when i watched a video two times in a row. There are two words that come to my mind while watching your videos! “HONESTY ” and “HELPFULNESS ”. Thank you for putting in the time and the effort to help us with you experience.😀👍🏻
“COURAGE” and “JOY” are the two words i choose for this year. In my heart i have the dream of starting a series of videos where i share about how i turned from being a young drug addict to becoming a follower of Jesus. And what i have learned about the Bible the last 25 years of my life. But it will take a lot of courage. And i want to enjoy doing it. Once again thank you for helping us content creators. 🙏🏻😇❤️

Dude, I found your channel after I bought a DJI mini 2 and since then I’ve learned so much from your videos, I’m truly thankful! I don’t know if you write scripts or memorize any lines for these type of videos but you’re amazing at vocalizing your thoughts in a very clear and easy to understand manner. It’s something I’m trying to apply to my content.
I think my word for 2022 is “change”. Happy new year my friend 🙏

I agree so much with what you've said. My channel is criticized a hell of a lot because I don't 'Niche Down'. I have too varied a content. No one ever, has asked me why I don't 'niche down'. Like you I watched a lot of You Tube education channels and to be honest they used to depress me somewhat because I couldn't do everything that they said I had to do to be successful. I have learned some things from them like not having too long of an intro and trying to get good thumbnails. None of my video's have exploded as such. My biggest viewed standard video only had 13k views and the biggest shorts video hit 318k views. Most of my video's only ever get just over the 100 view mark (some a lot less). However I'm not going to let that stop me from making the videos. I really enjoy the whole process. I don't think I'm very good at making them at the moment but I can only improve over time. So my one word for 2022 would be - perseverance

This hit me deep in my soul as a creator. All you mentioned here described everything I’ve been thinking. I always look at the numbers and I waist a lot of time and energy just focusing on numbers. It makes me frustrated in a way that I asked my self why I’m doing this.
I have all the time in the world to create content because few months ago I got hurt at my job and I have to get surgery on my knee, but during this time I’ve been focusing a lot on UA-cam and sometimes it gets me depressed because I see similar channels to mines that are doing so well and mines is just so slow. I love what I do, and I love creating the content for others but I get so stressed because sometimes you want your channel to do so well right away. But watching this video today made me realize a lot of things. Thank you so much for your words of wisdom and for making me realize that numbers don’t matter, that what matters the most is to be happy and enjoy what I’m doing.

I started off as an “adventure channel” then changed it to a photography channel. Now I just do the things I want to do, film them have fun with the edits and upload them. Since doing this I am gaining x10 the subscribers but more importantly, I am having fun doing it. Although it isn’t all about the subscribers for me, it is nice to know that there are other like minded people that share the same passion as me. I appreciate the video and the comments on here have been very positive from very successful people. What a positive community you have made. I hope I can do the same. Much love from down under 🇦🇺

I found this video incredibly valuable Jeven, thank you. I have been full-time in UA-cam for 9 months and will use your lessons. My particular favourite was 'take on less' - I have a rule for myself and that is 'keep it simple'. Like you, I work on one video, one thing at a time.
    Love your videos, thank you!

Mate I cannot agree more. The more I analysed the worse I felt.
Taking time to find out what resonates with your tribe is important, but I was getting bogged down in the weeds and not doing what I wanted, namely create content by taking adventures with my family and friends.

I left my Sony a6400 at home on my African safari last October/November (due to luggage restrictions on the last plane landing on the dirt airstrip in the Arusha region) and shot exclusively on my Samsung S21 Ultra+ and didn't even use the gimbal, external mic, filters and macro lens I took with me. I'm no pro, but the video turned out pretty good to commemorate my trip! I don't have a lot of subscribers but my primarily instructional videos for backyard/urban homesteading don't need to be perfect!

My ABSOLUTELY favorite Creator out there on UA-cam right now. Now only do you create AH-MAZ-ING content but the fact that you share your passion through tips, tricks, tutorials, reviews and advice are beyond GEMS! I started creating content on my other channel back in 2012 with just my iPhone 5 and I made the mistake of focusing too much on everything you mentioned not to in this video. I don't live life with regrets but I can seriously imagine what if I didn't stop. It is now 2022 and although I've been following you for the past 4 years, I'm so glad you came out with this video Brother!!! Thank you! I finally have the $$ for the Sony ZV-1 (the Sony ZV-e10 is OUT OF STOCK due to chip making shortage) and I get to start out with that (yes, I watched your review and it convinced me)! KEEP BEING AWESOME! You change lives!!!

I don’t think you realize how the lessons you covered in this video correlate with real life. Things such as…quit making comparisons, things don’t have to be perfect - start with what you have, learning to say no and working on one thing at a time, or it’s okay to figure it out as you go along…all of these can be used towards everyday life. It’s crazy because I’m not a creator but I love watching creators on YT, and I was really depressed today and riddled with anxiety, but I came across your video. I didn’t know that you would reaffirm some very important things that I forget about when I have these ‘lows’. Thank you for your content. I think you’re making much more of an impact than you’ll ever know. 🙏🏾

Thank you for this Jeven, I have struggled with coming to terms on what direction I want my channel to go, one month I want to niche down because that's what I hear all so often, then another I want to just concentrate on what I want to make. It's relieving to hear it from a large scale creator like yourself, that I can develop as I go. Loved the cinematography in this video too ;) !!

Re: The part about the trolls
I just want to spread some positivity here! Your videos have been some great inspiration for me for how I can make content in the future. Most of the content I worked on alone was not well received and thanks to you I realized I put way too much work into the technical side with editing etc but neglected the story part, as I'm not so good at planning, story writing, but my new years resolution is to learn to write engaging stories, as I'd really like to create a documentary.
Thank you for sharing your tips and being an inspiration!
And the people who write that oH yOuRe oUt oF bReATh stuff probably never tried hiking up somewhere steep and talking AND holding a camera. I can't even talk more than 2 word sentences when hiking up somewhere lol

Such valuable tips and knowledge Jeven. As an aspiring creator, I have to constantly remind myself why I am doing what I am doing (and it's not to get more subscribers). Primarily, it's my creative outlet and secondly, if it's an educational video, I want to be able to help out someone as if it was myself watching the video. That is what keeps me going and not the numbers. Getting more subscribers is a byproduct of those two objectives - at least for me. Thank you for this and hope you have a successful 2022!
As for trolls, I definitely had a comment that attacked my character and it did hurt but like you said, the best thing to do is to IGNORE and so I deleted that comment and hid the channel from them. Most trolls hate because they don't understand the challenges that come with creating content. So much goes behind the scene that yeah, your video isn't always going to be perfect. I believe if you create videos, you will be less inclined to criticize others. As creators, we all know the hard work and effort it takes to making one video. So, as you mentioned, ignore the haters and move forward.
My word for 2022 is INTENTION. I will create, live, and take action with intentions.
    Cheers!

Having watched your video just now.... my word is "Go!" I tend to put things off. Your expression "analysis paralysis" hit home with me. I tend to over-think things and end up not doing them. Unfortunately (for me) I'm 'time limited' and don't know how long I have. So I must get things done (make videos, learn the guitar, learn the piano, learn music theory.... many many things. So yes.... My word is "Go".

I enjoy just about all your videos, but your adventure videos with a splash of education are the videos I enjoy the most. Product reviews are fine on occasion, but I've learned so much from you as it pertains to equipment, studio creation, presentation, editing, videography, and more.
After 1 1/2 years of trying to figure out a direction with my channel, it has only been since October that I have found a niche that I'm passionate about. I'm going to enjoy creating my content and let my channel do whatever it will do.

If you listen to everyone giving instruction you might end up getting stuck. All of the best for 2022.

Great insights. I don't fully agree that quality doesn't matter. There's a minimum quality level that makes sense and arguably beyond that, it doesn't matter. But you should always do your reasonable best even if it's not as good as other channels, because it's harder to gain traction in anything you do in life if your quality is poor.

So apologies in advance for the length of this comment. You asked in the first section what success looks like for us as individuals? My wife and I live in Scotland although she is originally from England. She keeps in touch with her old friends via social media platforms. She told me recently about a friend of hers who had just died of cancer aged 50. The guy goes to the doctor feeling unwell, gets sent to the hospital for tests and one week later gets the results which tell him he has one week at most to live. Completely unexpected, completely out of the blue. The guy died 6 days later.
His story, although I never met the guy, never even knew he existed until that point, impacts me like very few things have ever done in my life. I'm 54 now and for the last 6 years I've been talking about doing a UA-cam channel based on fitness and yes, I appreciate there are already loads of channels on that subject but I thought I had a slightly unusual angle to come at it from. But when my wife's friend died I ended up questioning everything in my life and finally arrived at one question. If you could wake up every morning and go do what you WANTED to do rather than what you HAD to do, what would you pick?
Recently I read a report which stated somewhere in the region of 75% of Americans were unhappy in their job. That would not surprise me if it was accurate, nor would it surprise me if the survey area was extended globally and a similar figure was found. Hundreds of millions of people worldwide unhappy in their job, unhappy with their financial situation, unhappy with their fitness, or weight and unhappy with the mundane, miserable lives they lead and I can't help but wonder why? I don't mean to criticise others because I am most definitely part of the 75% club myself but I think by and large most of us are there by our own choice. A failure to act and an overly keen willingness to just complain keeps us were we are.
In my heart what I'd really love to do is start a channel documenting the story of a 54 year old guy who decided to change his life because he doesn't like the one he's living that much. Choose what it is I want to do and document that journey of working towards that. Sorting out a new job, sorting out my finances, sorting out my fitness and my enjoyment of my family and my life. I know I don't do that because I worry I'll be dismissed as a guy with a mid-life crisis thing going on, and maybe I worry no-one would want to watch such a thing. But I guess the only real worry at the end of the day is what will you regret when you're told you only have 7 days left? Will you regret what other people thought of you or will you regret the things you wanted to try but never did?
So if you don't mind Jeven I will pick 2 words for this year instead of the one you asked for. No Regrets
Thank you for the content you create, I've watched you for quite a while and just realised I'm not subbed. just corrected that mistake, thanks again and keep doing what you do. Be safe.

I appreciate your sincerity and gracious thoughtfulness in providing the lessons you’ve learned through this experience. It’s quite refreshing seeing a channel of your size being honest and vulnerable, you’ve brought value to my experience and given me thoughts to reflect on within my endeavors. Thank you 🙏

My word Jeven is FORWARD. I want the next day to be no less than equally as important as the previous, but the goal is that it should be better. I'm not talking about the day that happens to us, but the one we control. I had a lot of plans this year, and they changed abruptly. So the realignment of what plans I had, or even possibly imagined I had, now need to include the possibility that I won't ever realize them. Therefore I need to only try at this point to move FORWARD. I want to return to my original plan, but there is a new path that's laid before me. For example, my day today concludes pretty much FORWARD because I watched this video. I had a few other things to back that up of course! Thanks man for the great video.

Spot on advice. I find the hardest part about the platform is the isolation from other creators.

So first and foremost thank you for this video. At the very beginning right before covid I dropped a little over 12k on cameras and camera equipment. Drones, lenses, gimbals, action cams, microphones, lights. You name it I wanted to make premium content. Then the world locked down and I gave up. Now all I want to do is practice shooting and work on editing again to actually launch my channel. Thank you for the tips. Its time to apply them.

Jeven, first of all, I wanted to thank you for your advices. I found them very useful. As a new creator I am trying to think about the development of my channel. I can't be consistent in uploading videos or mentioning to the audience that they should subscribe to the channel, but I see that I have to do it. My word for 2022 is "patience". In time it will all get done. Much love from Greece. Have a happy and creative year!

    Happy new year Jeven!

thank you, it means something to hear someone with so much experience and in my eyes success, tell about what really matters. for one often forgets his focus. at least I often forget my focus and get to look at all the others with more subscribers than me and get angry that it's not me. But I love making videos. and that is what is important. so thank you thank you thank you for reminding me of that.

THANK you so much.. Ive put off doing videos for the last year and half.. because Im trying to do it all, started to learn adobe illustrator, then realized, thats not my goal.. and I have been binging on "schools" and " learning HOW to really do it right on You tube, but My creativity.. is suffering, worried about make up, and all the gadgets.. and I know I just need to make videos and learn the basics of editing.. so THANK you for reminding me WHY im here, and that I dont have 1niche.. im me, and a creative soul, rarely goes one way..

Hi Jeven. First off... Well spoken... And thank you so much for sharing your wisdom. Like you and others alike, I've fallen victim to some of thee things you've mentioned but I had to tell myself to stop and just trust in my own truth... I say this because for as long as I can remember, I have been a creator in one form or other. 3 years ago I was remodeling my basement and while I was in the mist of it my husband said to me; I can't wait for you to be done so you can sit and watch TV with me. I just stared at him and suddenly words came out of my mouth say; Well I'm not sure what's I'll be doing next. But I don't think I'll be sitting and watching TV. The next thing I knew I was creating videos... So I "TRUST" that I'm doing what I'm meant to be doing for however long I'm supposed to be doing it for...so I'm enjoy what is here and now and decided not to sweat the small stuff...

Thank you for sharing your story. I‘ve learned something today, so many content creators want their videos to be always perfect and that is one of the reasons why we suffer burnout and stress.

This was so good. Thank you, Jeven. I just started my channel in 2021. I stalled out BIG time after like 17 videos from exactly this "paralysis of analysis" and overthinking what I "should" be doing to move forward. I basically took three months of total focus on "the plan". I'll stop this comment as I've already exceeded my limit of "air quotes". But ya, all 9 lessons really resonate with me, but #9 hit means the most right now. Thanks again.

    Great Video man.
My word is: Consistency. I've always been quite good at picking things up like academics, sports, music, but haven't *consistently* done anything to the point where I would consider myself an expert. This year i'm going to stay consistent in the things that I care about, even when it gets tough. Thanks for the great tips.

This spoke to me on so many levels Jev! It is nice to hear this from someone because you're right I do sometimes overthink about how some channels may be doing better than me or checking analytics which then might put my mood down. At the end of the day, I'm happy that I made these videos in the first place as a memory and if there are some people out there who got inspired to travel because of it, I've done my job! Safe travels out there!

These are great thoughts. In 2021 and the start of 2022 I've been spending HUGE amounts of time and some money on youtube education courses and gurus and really haven't seen my channel's growth explode any differently. I've learned some valuable things about thumbnails and titles, but I think there is some truth that that can derail and make you go crazy. I think I might step back from all the obsessive analyzing and feeling the pang in my heart that I lost a subscriber and joy as I see I gained 2 or 3, and just get experimental this year. Try different content formats. Different content types. Not stress too much about "is it exactly in my niche or not". And focus more on more interesting storytelling, topics that I'm really passionate about, and showing more of who I am. I'm a tiny channel still, but that gives me extra freedom to just play around and try a lot of things.

Thanks, Jeven. As I work on getting my own butt in gear to start the channel I've been thinking about for the last year or so, this video nailed the exact issues I've been dealing with. Nine very good lessons-thanks and when I get up and running I will be sure to mention your helpful advice.

‘Courage’ is a powerful word. My word for the year is ‘fearless’, and about to release an MV called ‘fearless’ and a documentary on why ‘fearless’? I totally agree that a word is more effective than a plan. Thanks for the inspiration.
