he does use his tongue for that growl, he has made a video demonstrating the rolled R on the growl already.
For the rolling growl part I'll say my two cents; it's how they and we Turks pronounce the letter "R". To my ears the English "R" sounds like "aR" with an open vowel before it on it's own, not touching the palate with the tounge. When we pronounce it directly it's with the tounge touching the palate (Try saying BRR or GRR and take the later part with the tounge palate relation). So on a basic level he's saying "RRRRR" while growling with plenty of air so the tounge basically flaps against the palate. It transitions into "....RUUuuUOH" which he relaxes the tounge to it's usual growl position. With the control over his voice, support of diaphram and experience behind Alex, he sounds like a damn alligator.
Alex has been doing harsh vocals for over 12 years. Developing throat control like that takes a loooooong time. Great reaction!
He will make a crowd go quiet during a break down, drop his mic and scream and you can hear him project his voice in the back of the room. Alex is a fing animal.

You’re spot on about the growl coming from the throat bro! There are videos of people reacting to this trying to explain how they think he’s doing it but it’s just one big breath and a tonne of practice! Kind of like he’s gargling air 👍. Not everyone can do it and it’s not painful at all and for the people who can do it, it’s easier and feels more natural to do than any other vocal technique or style.

That gator sound he showed a tutorial he actually curls his tongue back behind his top teeth and rolls it while growling 😊

Thank you! You're the only other person I've seen who also thinks that's Corey Taylor in the audience, like I do. I swear that looks exactly like him, if it isn't him, but I'm pretty sure that's him. I've seen dozens of reactions to this video at this point, and you're the ONLY ONE, dude, the only one who sees it and mentions it. There are still fresh unseen reactions left here on UA-cam, so maybe someone else will, too, but so far it's just me and you.
Edit: The very next reaction video, by That Metal Guy, he says it, too, "Was that Corey Taylor?" So it's not just us. We're not crazy, that definitely looks like him.

you didn't do anything wrong. That's my correct reaction when I first heard this band. 😂
What you did there is used your epiglottis to simulate the growl. (or at least it seems to me that's the case) which is definitely Not the correct base for the sound. The proper technique using false chord engagement should not be painful, whatsoever. What you want is simulate an"exaggerated sigh" type of sound and work from there. Using your epiglottis is not advised.
Slaughter to Prevail could do a soundtrack for a doom game. It's weird because it's heavy, sounds heavy, but just doesn't feel heavy if that makes sense.

What Alex Terrible is doing is called a false chord. They are located above your vocal cords. Without the right technique, you will ruin your voice.
