Episode 26. Project six-three-six. Black Hole

  • In this episode of the Combat Approved we will show the most silent submarine in the world. Its official name is Project 636. The unofficial name is Varshavyanka. And the foreigners nicknamed this submarine "Black Hole" because it is very difficult to detect. A special type of rubber, high-technology steel, cutting-edge equipment, all of these make the Varshavyanka invisible. Every part of her is quiet. Everything from the hull to the air conditioners has been made and put together so that it doesn’t produce any noise. She can hunker down, take the enemy by surprise and attack her targets not only at sea, but in the air and on land as well.

Great idea to keep little stores of food in other compartments! If one part of the boat had to be sealed because of a leak, at least no matter where you are, you'll have some food to b survive on until help comes or you can get to port.

Having multiple hulls inter-spaced with voids with no gases in between and putting a coiling over the screw would drastically improve sound reduction. Then again it is diesel powered so there is only so much polish you can put on a turd.

I am beyond shocked that wood is being used in the propulsion system, that's just insanity. Very cool - it must work well, otherwise they wouldn't be doing it. I saw no mention of the rafting technology, which tells me it's either super secret stuff, or it has problems, especially around the diesels. I'm leaning towards the latter.
These boats are fairly loud when underway according to the French sonar man I'm friends with - detectable from 25k yards in ~70 dB sea state conditions ain't great, but I'm sure it was traveling quickly when he encountered it. I'd expect these boats would get annihilated by your average NATO surface combatant if under way.
However, I'm sure these boats are very quiet when rigged properly, and are undoubtedly tremendous for coastal defense. As long as the submarine moves slowly and calculates it's moves carefully, it would very likely wreak havoc on adversaries and be able to escape after firing the majority of it's weapons.
