As part of our Estuary Stewardship, Project Watershed has committed to the restoration of the Field Sawmill site in partnership with the K’ómoks First Nation and City of Courtenay. We have been given a name for the site by the K’ómoks First Nation and are now calling it Kus-kus-sum.
Our vision is to create a vibrant and productive habitat and connect it to Hollyhock Flats, which is adjacent to the site and one of the most productive areas in the K’ómoks Estuary. We have to raise $8 million, remove 8.3 acres of concrete, and recontour and replant the site with native species. It’s a big job and it’s going to a take a lot of work, please scroll down to find out how you can help unpave paradise and put reconciliation into action.
The site was purchased from Interfor in November 2020 and is being held by Project Watershed in trust for the K’ómoks First Nation and the City of Courtenay. The City of Courtenay and the K’ómoks First Nation will be on title as joint owners in the near future. Restoration of the site began in March of 2021. All funds raised from this point forward will go towards the restoration and protection of this important habitat in the heart of our community.

Can hardly wait until it's done. 2 more years. I hope I live long enough to see the completion. 😊
