I have ridden in the middle, dual turning lane along Skinker, which, I suppose, is six of one, half a dozen of the other.
Some riders don't know about riding in the lanes that go in your direction of travel. They're usually young and new riders. Unfortunately, the vast majority know full well that riding like that is not only dangerous but, it's against the law (which seems to never be enforced by the local PD). Most riders in my city are not only respectful of the laws about direction of travel but, they are very cautious to respect drivers who (again, for the most part) are respectful of riders.
That beginning would give me pause too. haha
I ride my bike going against traffic occasionally, specifically in this one spot I ride often. It’s a very sharp right turn that has a blind corner and a narrow shoulder. I have discovered, on sharp right hand corners, drivers tend to “lean into” the corner more and ride with one tire over the white line. It may be completely in my head, but on that section, I’m afraid if a car comes around the corner, they won’t have enough time to react since it’s a blind corner, and they’ll hit me. For that reason I ride on the left side of the road because, as I mentioned, the cars tend to “lean” to the right, creating more space for me on the left side. And it’s less blind coming around on the left side. Other than that, I never ride going against traffic for what you said. If you’re going 20mph, and a car is traveling in the same direction, going 30mph, and they hit you, you probably won’t die from a 10mph impact. But if you’re traveling against traffic, 20+30 = 50mph, and 50mph is much more likely to seriously injure, or kill you.
Love your videos BB!!
Merry Christmas
If I'm sharing the road with cars, whether using a bike lane or the road, I feel safer going the same way as traffic is going, but on the sidewalk (we have wide ones here, especially along busy roads with higher speed limits)), I'll go either way, depending on where I need to cross the street.
My route to work is 60% sidewalk, 30% with traffic, and 10% against traffic. This is the shortest and safest route to my work. We don't have bike lanes so the sidewalk is legal.
I need a good meer! I used to have a cheap one but that meer broke. 😢
I have family that would rather ride on the sidewalks, and never on the road. The idea of riding on unpaved roads or in the country land scares them.
I enjoy riding with traffic. I can split the lanes between slow cars. Always some healthy adrenaline
On the other side of the road through a big and busy intersection might not only be confusing to the rider but the drivers as well. Very dangerous.
Yeah, I see pedestrians walking on the right and bicyclists on the left all the time. It makes me want to yell, "you're on the wrong side," but I don't😄 IMO, riding on the left against traffic is dangerous because other drivers don't expect to see traffic coming from that direction (from their right) at an intersection. There have been several accidents here where bicyclists have been hit at intersections when riding the wrong way in a bike lane or on the left side of the road. I never ride on the left side of the street, but I occasionally ride facing traffic on a sidewalk.
Riding on the opposite side at night though would be bad, one reason not to ride there lol.
no i do not ride the wrong way
I ride against traffic. I want to see them coming and dive off my bike if they come towards me. If you go with the flow of traffic, you must depend on them being sober, and smart enough, and a good enough driver to not hit you. They might even fall asleep.
In the city I drive in, bicycling on sidewalks is illegal. You must ride in the road. So I advise to ignore those de facto laws. Rids on the sidewalks. Far safer, and this is 2023 America. Virtually no one walks anywhere anymore, so who are you going to hit?
Until you come flying down the sidewalk and get flattened by a car coming from a side street or parking lot.
If you are riding a bike with any kind of speed you’re asking to be hit on the sidewalk
@@Aus10c well, that is why God invented peripheral vision. But you do not have eyes in the back of your head when on the street.
Merry Christmas
