The fact that Steve Allen had the forsight to know how important Birdland was to New York Jazz and the Jazz music business.

Historic footage of the original Birdland. The building should be a landmark. It was one of the greatest cultural institutions in the country.

What a band... swinging hard. In 1968 I sat five feet away from Basie's band in a small club in Arizona. The must exciting musical event I've ever seen.

Incredible footage. This band was unmatched, although the announcer at the end would spend the latter part of his career trying to find one.

Saw Basie and this aggregation at the Pasadena Civic, maybe 1958, and the two sets consisted of the charts on “Atomic Basie” which I don’t believe had been released yet; but when it was I immediately acquired the vinyl followed eventually by the cassette followed by the CD followed by the thumb drive.

I think this is the only??? Really good clip to give the experience of what the inside of birdland was like. Sadly no Peewee.

Would someone please state who is the drummer on this set? It is NOT Butch Miles, who came on board in I think '74 or '75 and is the most known. This dates back to '56. Was it Sonny Payne? Was it Jo Jones?

I can't understand why the raves about this post -- sound is absolutely awful, the music is all chopped up, and there are lots of great recordings of of the Basie band during these years. Yes, the Basie band was absolutely spectacular -- I got to hear them maybe a dozen times between about '62 and the '80s when Basie passed. But this mess doesn't come close to capturing it. Check out this broadcast from 1953, which does!
