I thought Christmas was based on paganism too, but I recently watched a video by wes huff that made a great case for it. Basically, the same method of connecting Christmas with paganism is how some cherry pick ideas of myths to say the whole idea of Jesus is based on older myths. The scholarship shows that it was actually the pagans that tried to adopt Christian practices as their temple attendance fell more and more and they got desperate.
People can link anything to pagan practice. I mean pagans used to wear sandals and a robe well so did Jesus Christ. Does that mean Jesus Christ is also a pagan? No of course not. Christ/Mas is for all who love Jesus Christ, and they should celebrate his birth. The Holy Bible does say to celebrate God all day and every day. The way we understand Christ/Mas is when all the believers come in a gathering as one to celebrate our Lord Jesus Christ. Hanukkah was celebrated by Jesus Christ and his dis disciples which was a celebration of the victory by Judah Maccabee where they defeated their enemies and reclaimed the temple. When did they win? This was on December 25th 165BC. The temple was reclaimed and celebrated, and Jesus Christ became the temple when the word become flesh.
@badonlikoy5571 Hey bro, thanks for the comment. Yes, Christmas is about honoring and celebrating the birth of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, but we also have to remember that this is ultimately about the sacrifice on the Cross. Jesus had to be born, live a perfect life to accomplish what humans couldn't, suffer and die to pay for sins, and rise from death to grant eternal life to those who believe in him. So even though we celebrate his birth, we should always remember his sacrifice.
Hey bro. I didnt watch the video bc its 35 mins long? thats too long. Here is why you should celebrate Christmas: its marking the birth of Jesus Christ which is in the Bible. But what about the winter solstice and the fact that pagans were worshipped then. Bro, that is intentional. Duh! When christians first came about and said "we believe in only the one true God and Jesus Christ" it was not accepted easily. They were persecuted and many were killed. So Christians would sneak away and purposefully coincide their celebrations with pagan dates. Sometimes would even worship in catacombs just so they could praise God. That is why it is good. And that is why you should come to Christ and celebrate his birth.
@arilew1306 Hey brother, thanks for the comment. I purposely tried to avoid these types of arguments in my video because it's impossible to know for sure. What you're saying makes sense, but someone will present different information, and it leads you down a rabbit hole. You should take some time to watch the video. I also believe that Christians should celebrate Christmas, and I make my case directly from God's word. It's a more reliable argument than trying to use extra biblical sources.
@@BuildingChristianDisciples Even in the Bible the three wise men come to visit Jesus. In the Bible all await the arrival and birth of Jesus Christ. It is very important to celebrate Christmas.
I haven’t watched the video but yes you can be celebrate Christmas as a Christian. It’s funny because protestants are the only ones that has a problem with celebrating Christmas. Protestants go around speaking on what you can and can’t do, but yet fail to realize that they have no authority because they broke away from the church. If the Catholic orthodox Church came out and said this holiday is pagan this holiday is wrong then we wouldn’t celebrate it. But if a protestant comes out and says this holiday is pegan this holiday is wrong. They wouldn’t be speaking on any authority.
@quentindorsey9902 Hey bro, thanks for your comment. I agree that Christians should celebrate Christmas, but what makes you think that the Catholic church has the authority to decide what Christians should or shouldn't do??
@quentindorsey9902 Read Colossians 1: 15 to 29 and 1 Corinthians 12: 12 to 31. The only authority over the Church is Jesus Christ himself. He is the head, and we (the Church) are his body. As members of God's Church, we have different roles and responsibilities, but there is no human authority over his Church. The Bible gives no authority to the Catholic church, all authority belongs to Jesus Christ.
@ I don’t think you understand that as a Catholic we don’t reject Colossians 1 and 1 Corinthians 12. We actually affirm that stuff lol. But the claim Catholic is the true church or orthodoxy is the true church. First off I’m not orthodox or Catholic I am trying to debate between the 2 but I know Protestantism just isn’t fulfilling. And exploring and understanding Catholicism and orthodoxy I’ve came to the conclusion that Protestantism is just not it. And I’m not saying that protestants are not Christians and if I get confirmed as a Catholic, I’m not saying that orthodoxy or a Protestantism isn’t Christian because I believe they’re both Christian. However not all Protestants are Christian. But every Catholic or orthodox are Christian. But anyways ill reply to the verses and your response
So TMH says don't do it but we should do it anyway because we need to tell them about Jesus and the mixing of Paganism and the word of TMH is fine so its ok to again forget about TMH warning? Make it make sense. There should be no comprising of the word. He says we should be set apart. Not partying in the name Jesus when it is clearly documented that Jesus was born in the milder months of the year. Its documented that the pagan gods were and are celebrated on 25th. Is going through a ritual dinner. You comprise the word of TMH.
@Maz8501 Hey sister, thanks for your comment. You're right that Christians should be set apart as holy for the Lord, but what does that mean, and how do we do that? This gives me a chance to elaborate on my point in the video about Cain and his descendants. God tells us that they were the first to build cities, tents, musical instruments and tools, and they were the first to have livestock. Since Cain and his descendants were the first pagans on earth and those things came from them, should we abstain from all of those things? Should we not live in cities or play music, is that what it means to be set apart? Romans 1: 1 Paul says that he is set apart for the Gospel of God and he wrote what I was talking about in 1 Corinthians ch 10. He also wrote Colossians 2: 16 to 23. Please read it, and also read Matthew 11: 16 to 19, and you will start to understand what it means to be set apart. Jesus ate and drank with sinners and tax collectors (the pagans of his day). He also went to the Jewish festivals and celebrations, then he rebuked them. Being set apart doesn't mean that we can't participate, it means that we are not participating for the same reasons that the pagans are. For example, two people are doing the same job, but one is doing it to sustain his adulterous lifestyle, while the other is doing it to feed his family. It's not what we do that sets us apart (if so, we couldn't even go to church, there are pagan things in modern day church), it's the reason why we're doing it that sets us apart. Also, there's nothing we can actually do to set ourselves apart for God. It's TMH that sets us apart for his good work when we believe and put our faith in him Jesus Christ. If you read the passages I mentioned, you will see that I'm not compromising the word of God in any way. I am not saying that Christians can live any way they want to, or do whatever they want. We are not to be yoked with unbelievers, righteousness has no partnership with lawlessness, and light has no fellowship with darkness. There are some things where what you do is directly tied to the purpose, like lying, stealing, murder, adultery, homosexuality, and God has spoken on those things. There are other things where we determine the purpose for what we do. For example, you have two Pastors, but one is doing it for personal gains, and the other is doing it for our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. They are both pastoring but they are not equally yoked. In the same way, one person celebrates Christmas because of Santa and the other celebrates Christmas because he wants to honor the birth of TMH on earth. They are not equally yoked, they have no partnership or fellowship, but one of them have the truth and should share it. There's a reason why God left us the book of Proverbs. He wants us to apply wisdom to the gift he has given us. You don't have to believe me, but please read Matthew 11: 16 to 19 and see what Jesus has to say about it.
Shallow... First, it's very obvious and clear the tradition to celebrate 25'th of December came from pagans, not from Christians. Second, you mix growing up in pagan culture with celebrating pagan feasts. There's a difference between those things. For example, Joseph was in pagan land, but he didn't act as pagan, he kept God's commandments. We all grew up in pagan culture, but we don't have to be like this culture, we can be set apart for Creator. Third, do you really think that we reach people with gospel by becoming like them? I thought we reach them by being different and showing a good example. If you don't celebrate Christmas, people will see you are different and it will make people think about what God really is and how He really has to be worshipped.
@deeeew100 Hey Sister, thanks for your comment. Before I reply, clarify something for me. You said that if we're different, we will make people think about what God really is and how to worship. What is God and how should we worship??
