  • Francesco Piemontesi is a pianist of exceptional expression, technical brilliance and musical refinement. Born in 1983 in Locarno, where he grew up, he made his concert debut in 1994. He studied the piano at music schools in Lugano and Hannover, and was taught by the likes of Alfred Brendel, Murray Perahia and Alexis Weissenberg.
He has been invited to perform at the best concert halls and festivals, such as the Lucerne Festival, or the BBC proms; he plays with the Los Angeles Philharmonic, the London Symphony Orchestra or Tonhalle-Orchester Zurich, and has performed with conductors like Vladimir Ashkenazy and Mirga Gražinytė-Tyla.
Apart from his work as a soloist and his numerous prize-winning recordings (e.g. Best Newcomer Award - BBC Music Magazine 2012), Francesco Piemontesi also performs chamber music with various ensembles and partners - such as Gautier Capuçon and Tabea Zimmerman, to name but two. He has been art director of the Settimane Musicali di Ascona since 2013.

I think Francesco is now at the top of the list of living pianists in their prime. Truly remarkable technique, combined with deep integrity and metaphysical greatness manifesting through extremely sensitive and powerful pianism. We are lucky to witness such talent. Please please come to Australia after Covid.

All of that well said, and more I cannot add, other than that he also has big hands. It’s time for us musicians to acknowledge that this otherworldly simplicity of almost impossible technique is aided by large hands and the sizes of keyboards. It would be interesting to see in the mainstream smaller keyboards as days before. I’m not trying to reduce the pianist’s work. Confer with the latest Chopin Competition winner; hard work with this blessing: surreal results.

They truly seem to possess some kind of unique ease of control coupled with transparency, clarity and delicateness. It’s amazing to hear and look at!

Heard him the first time at the BBC Proms back in 2015, during which he played Mozart, if I remember correctly. Was absolutely stunned!
