Absolutely I love when lens makers take a chance and try something new. No it isn’t for everyone but at that price point damn there def is a market for it!
Yeah, but they're sleeping on bodies. No new APS-C camera that isn't a Z50 bodykit since many years. It's time for a Z60, Z70 or Z50 II or whatever they'll call it.
@@RedlinerSeven Because neither of the Z5, -Zf- , Z6 II or Z7 II have AI subject detection (nor does the Z50). Which isn't a full frame problem though, it's a Nikon problem. And part of the reason why they need to wake up and release new bodies. EDIT: The Zf does have it. Because APS-C tends to be smaller and lighter (both bodies and lenses). That gap is definitely shrinking though. Because some people care about reach at full zoom more than about high ISO quality. And the 1.5x crop factor gives them that reach. Yes, high-res full frame can do it too, but that's a lot more expensive. Because full frame did not have any credible megazooms until today.
@@RedlinerSevenYes it is. And in same way as D500 was a small D5 with all fearures, high speed and AF advantages. That's why is a good idea to introduce Z90 as a apc-c flagship (small Z9) with 30 Mpix sensor to make long lenses even longer. But I don't believe that Nikon will do it so that's why i bought Z8 45 Mpix and that's a good replacement of my D500 for wildlife with very similar details at 500 mm because Z8 has in DX mode also ca 20 Mpix. Z5 is a entry level FX and its aps-c equivalent id already existing Z50 and they aren't the bodies whih are wildlife photographers looking for.
Tamron was able to pull off a monster 35-150 f/2-2.8...I'm not surprised that 28-400 f/4-8 is actually doable at that size and price package with modern manufacturing and engineering methods. Optics have steadily been getting better and better over the past two decades, almost exponentially better in some cases.
I'm wondering if at F/11-F/16 the performance is good enough for landscapes. Incredible zoom range for a full frame lens. Nikon's 24-200 is well regarded in the landscape community for a super-zoom.
There are plenty of even more aggressive superzooms in the professional video world. The catch is that those lenses cost tens of thousands of dollars, have _extremely_ complex optical formulas, and are constructed to exacting tolerances that are beyond what is possible in a cost-constrained consumer lens. Nikon apparently feels that with modern simulation and manufacturing they're able do an adequate job. We'll see if they're right once these are out in volume (cherry-picked preproduction units as here don't count).

The video work in this one was great :) Great job Jordan. May I ask what lens you were using on the Z8 to shoot this, there was a nice pop to the image :)
The first zoom lens I ever bought was the Tamron 28-300 XR DI IF 18 years ago. Got great photos with that. I can imagine how much better this lens will be even going all the way out to 400 mm.
Superzoom has also been made by others, but not as such a small lens, so it's great that Nikon came up with it. Of course, you don't get everything with such a lens, but there will surely be many who can see a purpose with this lens 👍
Thanks for your review - very objective, and exactly what I wanted to hear --- I am pretty sure I will be buying this lens before summer... as I want it in time for my trip to Banff, and for lazy days at the cottage in Haliburton Forest, Ontario.
Already have the preorder in but part of me would have liked to see the range tweaked a little to open up the aperture a little more. Also seems sort of another semi redundant lens with the 24-200 and this one, and the 24-70 f4 followed by a 24-120 f4 version.
I'll be interested to see a later test when you look at sharpness. This seems like a Tamron lens; they just partnered up with Nikon and now this one has the relatively useless locking switch while omitting the very useful stabilizer and AF/MF switches, just like the 28-200mm. People shoot different things, but this trend toward zooms starting at 28mm is sad; I was on a trip recently with the 28-200mm and it was shocking how often the 28mm was just not quite wide enough and I was often switching lenses. Maybe that's the price to pay for a smaller size (maybe there's some sort of physics law involved where 24mm is much harder to engineer than 28mm) I'm not sure. I'm appreciating the recent superzoom releases; I'm always trying to lighten my kit and lately it seemed like the companies were only focusing on those who want giant lenses and a bag full of primes (due to thinking that everyone else must have switched to a smartphone and they could maintain profit margins with the remaining enthusiasts who don't care about weight).
I have the 24-200 F4-6.3 Z lens as my easy travel kit lens ... And I got the 70-180 F2.8. The one I use more often since I got it is the 70-180, but the other one is often my choice if I need a lighter kit. The advantages of the 70-180 si that I can put my TC1.4 on it. ... So I have plans to take that one on my vacation this summer. But if I had this lens!? I wouldn't min changeling 24 to 28 at F4 to be able to reach 400 at F8 instead of only 200 at F6.3 ... This is a perfect Safari lens for any one going on Safari to Africa. (Not for the professional photographers, but for tourists) If you have this lens on your cameras and bring a 28 F2.8 and 40 F2.0 as your low light lenses. You have it almost covered. But I would never recommend any one going on a once in a lifetime trip to Africa with only one camera! If I had this lens, I would still bring my 400mm F4.5 + TC1.4 and my two Z6II cameras. And my 20mm F1.8. But one of my cameras would have this on!
Sounds reasonably good, but I'm still waiting for a proper test. I mostly go with the 24-120 S and the Sigma 150-500 (both are superb, IMO), but if the IQ is good enough, I just might switch... third of the weight compared to that combo is something to be considered. I use the Sigma at f/8 anyways, so the loss of light is not necessarily a huge issue... it all comes down to price for me at this point. €1500 or thereabouts, and I might be tempted. €2000 or above, I wouldn't bother with it.
Intriguing. Yeah, definitely interested in the 400mm zoom. Kind of a shame about it being f8 from 200mm, but with the enormous zoom the trade off still seems good.
Yeah, mine on the A6700 is also great. Just very slightly soft at 18mm and mindblowing at 300mm. I rarely use anything in between, but macros at 50mm are also super sharp. The 18-300 on the 40MP sensor has slightly more reach at full zoom than the 28-400 on the Z7/8/9.
I’ve got my Tamron 18-400mm on my D5600. A totally cool kit if ever there was one. FF equiv of 27-600 is just the “ant’s pants” travel camera of all time.
I always prefer to divide the focal lengths (24-120, 100-400). But I've been in some circumstances where changing lenses was impractical. for those who stay in places with a lot of wind and dust, it is a great option.
I love my Tamron 18-400 ... but this Nikkor is a full frame lens, so (on my Z50) it's actually 42-600mm. The difference in snappiness between my Tamron and my Z mount lenses is palpable and I'm drooling over this new offering.
It just goes to show that there is a market for super zooms. I also feel that full frame is the new APSc as Nikon don't seem to be developing anything major specifically for their APSc range. I would expect them to release a true budget ff camera soon
This, in fact, can make me return to Nikon back from Panasonic L mount. I've waited for Panasonic Ultrazoom but I was VERY disappointed - ONLY 28-200 is crap. And now Nikon does this! Veeeery interesting!
I have to say, there is nothing wrong with the video out of the G9 {I just watched the Sigma 50mm 1.2 Art video}. However the video out of the Z8 is something else. This video looks great.
I'm kinda looking forward to picking it up for my afternoon walks. It'd be perfect to snap a sunset or a hawk on a pole and everythign in between...during the day in good light of course.
This lens looks great for sports and wildlife shooters when the light outside is good enough, or when cranking up ISO. I will stick with the Z 24-200mm for now which I have my eye on for my Z5. I don't do much wildlife or sports. And 200mm is still good for some sports in close range. I also bought the FX 28-300mm previously for my D780, which I like a lot and have used it at ballet recitals and weddings. Good work and praise to Nikon though, for making a Z 28-400mm, and so light for wildlife/sports shooters!
The thing I am most pleased with is actually the polygonal bokeh... I wish, more lenses would offer just that. Maybe... 20mm F1.0 with 6 Aperture Blades? 🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤
Really wanna see the contrast between 24-200 and 28-400 since I just got the first one about eight months ago. The moment I saw the launch of this new lens…Ohhhh boy am I so regret buying 24-200 right now😂
The size of the lens is probably silly on a Z30/Z50. But the range for something like soccer or baseball would be awesome. If only there was a D500 style mirrorless body for it.
@@djxcel23 Sorry. I was implying things. More directly...Why would Nikon make an E mount or RF mount lens? That's what Sigma and Tamron are for. Why would Nikon make an F mount lens when they would need to entirely reformulate the optical train to account for the smaller opening and the greater distance between the rear element and the sensor..and then of course the complexity of stepping motors being integral to this new lens vs. the old style mechanical motors. With that little bit of extra specificity, what mount exactly are you thinking Nikon is going to adapt their Z- mount to?

Was this video shot on the same camera and lens? It would be great to know what the rig, including wireless mic, for the shoot was.
This was shot on a Nikon Z8, Nikkor 24-70mm f/2.8, and recorded with a Shure MoveMic.
I got Tamron 18-400 which maxes out at f6.3, but still f8 on full-frame is better than f6.3 on APS-C...
I wonder if this is Nikon original or a tamron made Nikon branded lens. I wouldn’t mind getting 28-400 for my Sony.
It's nikon
What focal length does the max aperture drop to f/8 at?
200mm
Chris said 200mm
2:35 Whats a VR in a lens?
vibration reduction = stabilization
@@truthseeker6804 what? first time i heard somebody use that term
@@coin777 only nikon uses such a complex term.
hi. how is the image quality compared to the sony rx10 iv?
Thanks guys! Well done for Chris getting BIPs (birds in pipe) 😂
It seems very versatile..can it take the z teleconverter?
Which camera bag was chris using?
This, in fact, can make me return to Nikon back from Panasonic L mount. I've waited for Panasonic Ultrazoom but I was VERY disappointed - ONLY 28-200 is crap. And now Nikon does this! Veeeery interesting!
How is this lens compared to the 28-300mm 3.5-5.6 lens?
I have to say, there is nothing wrong with the video out of the G9 {I just watched the Sigma 50mm 1.2 Art video}. However the video out of the Z8 is something else. This video looks great.
No sharpness tests?
What about chromatic aberration? I remember I had chromatic aberration on a similar lenses that I had over ten years ago.
Hello, is it suitable for Nikon Z NIKKOR ZTC-2.0X Teleconverter? Thank you
I dont think so
F8 ? at what focal length ?
Should I sell my Z 24-200mm? I do sports event video with my Z 5 and also nature photography. For both uses 28-400mm range would be useful.
Such a classy shot of Jordan in front of this sign!😂😂😂
That lens very much reminds me of Tamron 18-300 f/3.5-6.3 for APS-C sensors - construction is identical, capabilities too.
I'm kinda looking forward to picking it up for my afternoon walks. It'd be perfect to snap a sunset or a hawk on a pole and everythign in between...during the day in good light of course.
Ich fotografiere nur Sonnenuntergänge tagsüber 😂
thanks!!
Is that a crop sensor or full frame lens?
Perfect for parents taking photos especially soccer
The thing I am most pleased with is actually the polygonal bokeh... I wish, more lenses would offer just that.
Maybe... 20mm F1.0 with 6 Aperture Blades? 🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤🤤
More versatile for air shows than a 100-400 as you are able to get close up shots of the planes once they land or are in large groups.
Honestly I would consider getting a Nikon Z camera purely for this lens.
What camera mount/s with it be for ?
What mount do you think a Nikon Z 28-400 lens could mount to?
@@leonidous888 i was asking if it will be in other mounts
@@djxcel23 Sorry. I was implying things. More directly...Why would Nikon make an E mount or RF mount lens? That's what Sigma and Tamron are for. Why would Nikon make an F mount lens when they would need to entirely reformulate the optical train to account for the smaller opening and the greater distance between the rear element and the sensor..and then of course the complexity of stepping motors being integral to this new lens vs. the old style mechanical motors. With that little bit of extra specificity, what mount exactly are you thinking Nikon is going to adapt their Z- mount to?
