- Here I sing a powerful folk song from Buryatia that comes from a very dark time in (Mongolian) history. The story of this song originates from Buryats who missed their family, children and lovers. The people in this time were extremely oppressed. A time with mass killings under communist regimes. Also including executions, famine, hard labour (Gulags). During this Great Repression (Их Хэлмэгдүүлэлт) in the 1930s many innocent people, in this case specifically Buryats (But also Mongolian, Kazakhs) were imprisoned/tortured by the Stalinist Purges under leadership of Choibalsan. Buryat women sang this folk song to sing for their lost/killed/imprisoned family/children/husbands.
The song is known under various titles, but most commonly "Hadiin Oroigoor" ("On top of the rock") or "Kholoo l baina" ("Too far away"). If you want to read the translation of the songs lyrics, turn on the English subtitles!

Hi Rowan, super cool, I love this version. Btw, khada in Buryad means mountain, rock is khabsagai. So "Khadyn oroigoor" is something like "Over the top of a mountain" or "Over mountain-tops".
