Tip from a female. Use a sanding block. If you just use your hands, you are going to get dimples and rises. Start with a higher grit and lower it to about 240-360 depending on the finish you want and when it's close to level sand past the area to at least twice the surface area so that any imperfections blend. Clean the area well and make sure it is dry before applying paint - any area you think will be touched by paint so you don't pick up dust which can cause clumping. Do a few coats of paint so you get the 'not new board' effect and it blends better with the final coat.
Pro Tip: before you begin your repair gently peel away a decent sized piece of the material with paint on it so you can take it to Home Depot or wherever and have them color match the paint. You're already patching it and it's no harder to patch it with a little bit more of the material gone. If you are not patching something up but do need to color match the paint, same thing, but just cut a little piece out of a corner somewhere patch it and then paint that when you get your color match paint for whatever it is you're trying to do touch-up painting with.
I use all purpose joint compound and you can hold the scraper as a 90° angle to scrape excess off easily. Done it for a long time now and it works great
This is a great demonstration of drywall mud. Just a few things. 1) if you see cardboard texture stuff make sure to apply GARDZ before the mud so that the mud can form a chemical seal to the fiber. Alternatively, just gash it past that cardboard texture stuff carefully and apply it to the drywall directly. 2) Make sure to wear a dust mask and vacuum it up, that stuff is pure silica dust. 3) Before you paint it you need to apply primer otherwise the mud will show through the paint and the paint will come off when the moisture changes. Otherwise very good stuff, subbed.
If i didnt already know this from my failed painter education, i would be really happy to know this. You being here, teaching others how to do this makes me really happy. Thank you. ❤
Im following you because of the Ham Dammer in the door hindge adjustment video brother. I bought my son the Black Panther electric drill set for him to help do electrical work like tie plugs and light fixtures. Ive done all of the work it takes to build a house for years. From electrical to hvac to op equipment and block laying to framing so some of this stuff ive done and seen. What I haven't seen is that Thor's hammer tool kit. Your mother is a legend brother. Cant wait to show my kid that tool kit!! Keep on keeping on!!!
The “i dont have the paint so we are just gna fukn leave it like that” earned u a sub sir. I do that shit for a living and instead of giving it “the landlord special” and making it worse with random colors and a fukd up patch u just evened it out and left it. Salute
Coming from a professional, it really is that easy. But you do want to put some primer over the spot first if you see brown paper. Otherwise, the moister from the putty can cause the brown paper to bubble off the drywall
They make drywall sand paper too that looks more like screen material. Saves from a lot of binding and friction sticking regular sandpaper tends to do on those large flat surfaces
With only dry dex, you can also use a damp sponge to smooth it. Not so dusty. That trick KINDA works with compound 40 but does not work with the rock hard stuff.
Use spatula first to scrape imperfections making it smoother when you place the mud. Then before you place the mud check the texture of the wall first and match it so that when you paint it next it would look like the hole was never there to begin with. Best to do all the prep on that wall before painting it.
It’s a “blade” and “spackle”. Different grit sandpaper can make the texture smoother or rougher. A roll on brush will get you that desired texture. Don’t use a bristle brush.
This is excellent however if you want a paint match you just need a chip of the original paint, it's best to take it to a Home Depot or Lowe's, any place that has a sizable paint department, they can scan it and make you that match.
Hack for sanding, take a stack of post-it papers, line up a few with the glue all lined up to make it the length you need, fold up the bottom and stick this strip under where you are sanding. It will catch a majority or the dust to make cleaning after easier😊
I would also like to add: put some sort of towel, cardboard, or drop-sheet under where you are sanding. This will collect the bulk of the dust, and protect the surface below it. Also remember to dust and vacuum after sanding to get up the last of the dust.
You can also use a sponge and water to sand it (dump the water outside not in the drain). Its cleaner in the fact u wont have plaster dust everywhere but it does take slightly longer. Also for best results let it cure over night before you sand it down
Dont mud over exposed paper like that, peel off any loose paper, then spray it with a few coats of shellac based primer, kilz makes one and they sell it at home depot, let it dry, THEN mud over the hole, sand and paint
Sheetrocker here. What grit of sandpaper? "Also bend your thin metal spatula " away from the fill and you sand less. You can call your landlord to find what paint they use and buy a 9$? Sample of the eggshell or semigloss paint from home depot F*** lowes. Edit 7 likes!?! Thats more then ive gotten in my life! Ty guys!
I just got some random like 220 and 320 grit, and hey let me ask you some for another videos I’m guna try to fix my ceiling it’s made of the same stuff as the walls would that be the same process to patch ?
@Justbored1214 So if its just flat and not "popcorn ceiling" then yes BUT if it is popcorn ceiling you can buy that spray in a can at your local home depot F*** lowes
@@Justbored1214if it’s the same material yea same process, just lay down a dropsheet and use a respirator if dry sanding cos u will get dusted af and u don’t want that in your lungs n stuff
@@Justbored1214i use 120 but 220 is probably better to keep you from sanding too far if your new at it, if you can break/peel off a 2 inch piece of that drywall that IS the correct color you can bring it in to any paint store and have it matched, just make sure you get it from a spot that the paint looks fresh still and not exposed to marks, moisture or frequent contact. Usually behind a couch or something because it will need to be patched as well I prefer dunn-edwards, sherwin williams, and home depot
Pro tip, when you use a sanding paper get a hard surface that fits on the paper. A block of wood will do, so that you can use the paper more effectively.
Pro tip, if you buy drywall mud you can do the same thing, but instead of sand paper to clean it up, you can use a damp sponge so you don't get dust everywhere
If you are through the white sheetrock paper like here, you may want to put on a primer 1st to prevent issues later. I would also recommend using drywall compound over DryDex, but ya, it will work fine
That’s going to shrink and crack later. Compound right onto that paper will pull the moisture out too quickly and absorb/give up moisture more quickly than the drywall around it. Cut out all the loose paper around the edges, paint with killz, let it dry, proceed with the drywall compound.

I love working with this stuff. I know its not like a perfect fix, but my moms wall had this huge dent in it and i kinda used it as clay and shaped it to fill that space. It took a couple days to dry but uh, with paint over it. You cant tell that there was a giant dent there. 😂😅

@@your_uncle_barry_6700 I'm not sure how accurately the screen on your phone picks up the color I think there might be an app for that though

Close your eyes and feel with your hands only so you can tell how much of a difference in texture there is.
