Agreed. I always sort of disliked how in later Z and Super the ONLY thing Goku ever did was train and fight. Like they act like that's the only thing he ever does but earlier in the series we see him do other stuff. He fishes, he collects wood, he explores, he's self sufficient and has a life outside of fighting. Like don't get me wrong, Dragon Ball is all about fighting the bad guys so obviously the vast majority of Goku's screentime is him training and fighting, but I don't like the implication that that's all he does. I would have loved to see more of these normal moments when he's just doing stuff with his family rather than the characterization that he can't even hold down a job and ONLY lives to fight.

Honestly one of my favorite scenes in the whole show. Minus the obvious part of the series that is fighting, a huge part of the Dragon Ball genre is the value of family. The good parts, the bad parts and the ugly ones too

Goku was never a bad father, he supported Gohan when Gohan decided to go to Namek and He was proud of Gohan in lots and lots of cases and in fact Goku was the reason that Gohan defeated Cell, so he isn't a bad father.
He ain’t that great after the cell fight he refused to be wished back too life knowing he has a wife and son and another kid on the way but chooses to stay gone for 7 years
