You can take an Airport rail link from the airport to Bangkok cheaper and faster than anything else. After that you can take Sky train (BTS) and Underground train (MRT) around Bangkok easily and conveniently.

I recommend that if you want to experience true Thai adventure and friendship, venture away from Bangkok. Then travel to the countryside of Thailand and associate with the Thai way of life and will find true kindness. Don't worry about accommodation and food. You can stay and live with a local person. They would be delighted if you would stay in their house for a night.
