How to Build a DIY Trailer Ramp for under $50 bucks

  • This is a video of my trailer ramp & gate for my tandem axle, 4' by 13' utility trailer. I used 1.5" square tubing for the frame and some heavy duty expanded metal grate for the ramp.
    The whole project took me about 4-6 hours spread over a few evenings and it has served me very well so far.

    Just found your channel, awesome video, I would like to do same with my trailer over here in the West of Scotland! What type of welder do you have? I'm looking towards getting a mig for my wee workshop.

      Well Johnnystrang74. I'm glad you found it too. my friends are actually going over there this summer and are renting a place for a month. not sure where. they're thinking of possibly moving there from canada and stay for a year or longer. anyways, about the welder, i just used my old (50 year old) sears stick welder for that project. in the meantime I got me a used mig welder for $250 and i much prefer it but for heavier welds like these ramps i would still use the stick welder. i find i can place thicker beads quicker. in any case i hope things work out for your shop; there's just nothing like having your own tools to make/fix your own stuff. thanks for watching and i hope you stick around.

      Your friends will love it here, I'd recommend they take a week and tour the NC500 route, taking in the Bealach na Ba' pass and sampling the Whisky straight from the distillery! Re the welder, I've got a small inverter stuck welder which is awesome for repairs, but looking at Sealy migs for the new shop as I feel will be a better all rounder general welding fabrication. Keep the videos coming!

    Hey there, just subscribed. I just wanted to say thank you so much for this video. It’s very helpful for my current small boat trailer I’m converting to a motorcycle trailer. More important to me though is your style of how you made your video with the music, camera angles, informative, peaceful personality and just all around everything. It switched a very depressed state of mind with no mental drive into a grate day this morning. I just wanted to thank you for this video and keep up the great work. I might put my trailer build on my channel.

    Great craftsmanship!
    One thing to think about…that tailgate will act like a parachute when going down the road at highway speeds. I like to build mine a bit narrower so that if the load permits, I can lay the gate down flat in the bed of the trailer. I nearly ran out of gas on a long trip with an empty trailer!
    One more thing for the future, instead of the long pieces to support the gate in the up position, build a bracket at the rear of the bed rails with a pin or a spring latch to secure the gate.
    Looks great!

      Do you want some tissues? Years of investment in tools yields continuous pay off. You also don't need 3/4 of this equipment to build this - Some things are just easier to use if you have them available. I've built full sets of steel recovery bumpers with sub $200 welder and a $10 angle grinder.

    • @jasonmcnair3940
      @jasonmcnair3940 4 місяці тому +2

      @@ADVTOURER you're mocking a very valid comment. Doesn't matter if you don't need a lot of this equipment, if steps 1 and 2 are to learn to weld and buy a welder, you're definitely in for way over $50. Don't get me wrong, it's still a very useful video for some people, but the title is a little clickbaity.

  • @Gantzz321
    @Gantzz321 5 років тому

    only change I would make is the last thing you built, the bar that goes from the trailer to the ramp, I would weld the "bolt" to the bar. It does not need to be free to move (or lose). the bar has enough flex in it to move back and forth without damaging it to allow the bolt to slide in and out of the hole. Then you just pull the cotter pin, pull the arm/bolt out of the ramp, and put the pin back in the bolt so you don't lose it.

    I realize this is an older video. Very nice design and execution. However, I don't see how you were able to buy all the metal and even the expanded metal and be under $50 bucks. You must of had most of the metal and didn't include that in the cost... Thumbs Up!

    Dude has a machine shop in his garage. Him building this ramp
    Is like me trying to build an iron man suit in the middle of the desert.

    Nice build. I had to rewind I'm like did he say moncton lol. Wish it was still a 50$ build tho just checked at tri province and the mesh alone is 160$ 😣

    How did you come up with $50 with all that material?

    • @ChrisOfAllTrades
      @ChrisOfAllTrades  3 місяці тому

      @Quetzachapin this was like 12+ years ago. I think the final total for the gate was $47. Couldn't build it for that nowadays anymore...that's for sure.

    What welder are you using? Is it shielded?

      I think when I built this gate I had a cheap Mastercraft (canadian tire) mig welder with c25 shielding gas.

    OMG the only reason I can't stand this video is that you made it look to easy so it's one of those love hate things.
    All kidding aside you are a great metal fabricator.
    Beautiful work...

      I checked a local supplier today, it's almost $8 per sq. ft. for 6 gage, 1.5" expanded metal. I'm looking into using 9 gage, 3/4" instead.

    The only thing I would change is the angle iron that was screwed into the deck. I would weld it on or just weld the other pipe to the trailer itself so the screws don't back out while your on the freeway.
    Great job on the rest though!

    My question is how heavy is this thing??? Gotta be over 100lbs

  • @joecraft4409
    @joecraft4409 6 років тому

    Ok, the upright braces could be hinged in the middle to make them scissor to half length during the time the ramp is down . This way they don't stick up in the air while not in use. Could poke someone's eye out,,, lol.

    • @chuckadam9046
      @chuckadam9046 4 роки тому

      He used a single piece of angle iron at top of his ramp not the sides. For minimum lip when the ramp is down

      After fabricating the hinges he attached those to another piece of angle iron he attached to the trailer frame

    what size hinges are those and what are they called. also what size angle did you use

    • @ChrisOfAllTrades
      @ChrisOfAllTrades  7 років тому

      I made the hinges myself starting at 6:30. I think the center rod is 1/2" diameter and the pipes are 5/8" inside diameter. The angle iron at the bottom was 1.5" and the square tubing for the frame was 1.5" if memory serves me right.
