    I realized I forgot to mention that the chart used in this video comes from PGA data from 2003-2010. The strokes gained baselines have definitely been updated since. This brings me to another point... these baselines will be updated regularly as the game evolves.

    This is the best explanation of SG I've seen so far. Thanks for taking the time to put this content together.

      Thanks Neil! I plan to make another Strokes Gained video soon that will further explain how they are calculated and how certain scenarios change what they look like. Stay tuned!

    I have one more question -- just to see how an example of a real world strokes gained scenario would play out. Every explanation of Strokes Gained that I've ever seen always stops the example at 5 shots from tee to hole out. But what happens if a player:
    1. Hits their tee shot out of bounds
    2. Hits their 2nd tee deep shot into the trees 270yds out from the hole
    3. Hits a recovery chip back onto the fairway
    4. Hits the 1st approach into a fairway bunker
    5. Hits the shot out of the bunker to 170yds out
    6. Hits the next approach to 60yds out
    7. Hits the approach 30ft from the pin
    8. Hits the 1st putt 10ft from the pin
    9. Hits the 2nd putt 2ft from the pin
    10. Finally holes out
    What does that look like for strokes gained/lost?
    Thanks in advance for your help 🙏

      Thanks for the question. I can't calculate that because there are missing distances remaining to the hole for some shots including the first tee shot. I started to make up the numbers to make it work out but get stuck at step 4 and 5 as there is no yardage associated with the fairway shot from 3 (chip back into fairway) to shot 4. So, if this is a real-life example that you want calculated, I certainly can. I know SG: OTT is -2.95 for certain. Approach is a bit ambiguous to figure it out entirely. I know certain numbers, but nothing of value to add here. And 3 putting from 30 feet away would net -1.02 SG: Putting. Anyways, hard to do the full calculation without complete data.
      Secondly, my calculator stops at 5 shots per hole because each shot added after that doubles the amount of code that I need to write. Just easier to stop at 5.

    Heĺlo, really enjoyed the video. I cam see expected shots off the tee, approach from all kinds of lies, but struggle to find short game data. Eg 10 yards from green in rough. Is this available please?

      @@SweetSpotDFS hello. There ia a tab in your spread sheet ' ATG'. Isnt that 'around the green' ? What data is in that?

    • @SweetSpotDFS
      @SweetSpotDFS  3 роки тому

      @@rharris608 Yeah, I wasn't able to get this data yet. That tab is currently blank. Lou Stagner on Twitter has these graphs if you wanted to do a deep dive for it.
      I do plan on creating a second strokes gained video. Once I do, I'll hopefully have that data.

    Just need clarification re: the SG Calculator sheet. For example, when calculating SG, you type a value in the "TEE SHOT" column as "yards" remaining, then another value in the "2nd SHOT" or "3rd SHOT" columns as "feet" remaining. But, how does the SG formula discern yards from feet?

    • @SweetSpotDFS
      @SweetSpotDFS  2 роки тому

      I have anything that is off the green measured in yards and anything on the green measured in feet. So, if they hit the green... it'll be "feet remaining". If not, it'll be "yards remaining". Just makes everything easier for the calculations... but not limits the examples I can provide.

    I have a query re Justin Thomas example and the strokes gained putting. 1st putt was 50' = 2.14. 2nd putt was 3' = 1.04. For the 1st putt (2.14-1)-1.04 = 0.10. For the 2nd putt (1.04-1) = 0.04. This means Justin had +0.14 strokes gained putting from the 1st hole. Is this correct? I ask as when I calculate the results out for the entire round the strokes gained putting is +0.04 not -0.30 as you've shown it. Figure I have it wrong somewhere so just wanted to check in with you :)

    • @SweetSpotDFS
      @SweetSpotDFS  Рік тому

      I guess I'm confused to your query. Are you personally calculating his entire round of golf and got +0.04 SG: Putting instead of -0.30?
      For the 1st hole, it would be +0.14 SG: Putting. An easy way to think of this... from 50 feet away, the PGA Tour has a baseline of getting the ball into the hole in 2.14 strokes as you have noted. Since he was able to hole out in 2 strokes, he gained 0.14 strokes on putting (2.14 baseline - 2 strokes). Maybe we have a discrepancy in our calculations? Here's what I have for each hole:
      1. +0.14
      2. +0.23
      3. -0.22
      4. -1.06
      5. +0.61
      6. -0.22
      7. -0.22
      8. +0.61
      9. -0.02
      10. +0.04
      11. -0.13
      12. +0.61
      13. -0.39
      14. +0.13
      15. -0.02
      16. -0.02
      17. +0.23
      18. -0.60
      Total = -0.30

      @@SweetSpotDFS Hey there! Thanks for replying :) I can see that what you have for Hole 1 Putting Strokes Gained is +0.14 so I feel like I have the thinking correct, I just have some values that seem different. For example: Hole 16 -- Putt distance is 4ft = 1.13 -->> 1.13-1 = 0.13 but you're showing it as -0.02. How do you arrive at -0.02? Hole 15 the putt is from 3ft = 1.04 -->> 1.04-1=0.04 but you're showing it as -0.02. Different distance putt.. but you're showing the same -0.02 value. What am I missing? :) I have 15/18 values the same as you... just have 3 different and can't work out why I am getting different values.

    • @SweetSpotDFS
      @SweetSpotDFS  Рік тому

      @@johnpilato6101 Hole 15 and 16 were 2 putts from 30 feet away. It's weird to follow, but anytime you see a "lie" as "G" just remember that's the first putt's distance.
      So, JT hit his drive on hole 15 to 220 yards away from the hole, in the fairway. He then put it on the green, 30 feet away from the hole and 2-putted from there.
