1996-09-29 ITV News reporting on Nintendo 64 release

  • Gordon Steinke and Lynda Steele discuss the new 64-bit game machine (plus, bonus innuendo with the weather lady!). From CITV-TV, now called Global Edmonton. No date given during the portion of the news that I recorded, but the other shows on this tape imply the airdate as September 29 (the N64 launch day).
There's a screen saying who's on Letterman "tonight" and the guests were from the Friday, September 27, 1996 episode. This confused me when I first posted the video. I just realized (Oct 2016) that this is because Sept 29 was a Sunday, so the Letterman episode was of course a rerun. Hot damn, I'm smart.

Odds are, they most certainly did. Space invaders was super popular and those guys are working behind the scenes with technical equipment, so their interests already skew in that direction. They probably played it at the local arcade just off campus almost every day. They especially played on the weekends. They were the first to arrive to the arcade when it first opened. They'd be there all day eating pizza and nachos. They knew the owner so we'll he'd let them stay an extra half-hour after closing just so they could have a chance at getting that record high score. After they graduated they all went and got a space invaders tattoo to commemorate those good times.

I was a pretty sheltered child who lived out in the country, so didn't see or hear anything about the 64 until I was told by my parents that our cousin had gotten a new nintendo for christmas. Bear in mind that I thought they were talking about a super nintendo. The shock and disbelief of my 6 year old self when I walked into my cousin's house and saw that sleek, curved box operating for the first time is something that stays with me still.

I was born in 1988, fairly late in the year. Back in early 2009, I got back into gaming a bit after watching AVGN's stuff. I bought myself a Nintendo Wii and a bunch of games, including old N64 ones, and I had a period of nostalgic euphoria. Now I'm sitting here, thinking about how my memories of being nostalgic for the N64 back in 2009, are older than my memories of the console were back then. January 2009 is much closer to late '96 than to the present. My mind can't handle that fact.

Man I miss the 90's so badly. I'm born 1993, and my first console I got in 1998 or 1999 was the N64, and my first game was NBA (Idr what year), but those graphics blew me away. Two days later, my folks took it back because they wanted me to be able to play the SNES diabetes games mainly (yes I'm type 1 diabetic). I loved the SNES, but around 2000, I missed having the N64 so I got one from "Santa" that Christmas, and my dad had rented me a few games, and my grandma got me Super Mario 64. @LondonOntGuy GamePro used to be a good magazine back then. EGM was always best though. Now the only mag left seems to be lame Game Informer and a chopped reformatted EGM.

How I never got a n64 for Christmas I never know why I just bought one for the very first time this last week I have to say probably the best Nintendo console there is and I grew up with the SNES and the genesis in my 30s now I still love the old school video games kids this day and age have no idea what it was like growing up in the 80s and 90s heck with the Xbox PlayStation that does not compare with Sega and Nintendo rivalry that was the golden age of video games I don't care what my age is I am all classic gaming and that will go to my grave with me

there were plenty of news stories in the 80s and 90s with parents and news reporters who talked negatively about video games, especially when Mortal Kombat came out. If anything I’d say video games are a lot more accepted today amongst than they were back then.

Yeah, but you weren't old enough to play games until the n64 generation. Same with me, I was born in 1993, and didn't start playing video games till I got n64 for my 6th birthday.

I don't understand why Nintendo is so far behind in gaming today. I mean they have been in the game twice as long as Microsoft and Sony. Nintendo's systems should be miles better than the Xbox and PlayStation, but the hardware is weak in the graphics aren't that great. If they were at the top gaming back then, I don't see a reason why they aren't now.

+Sal Hunter (Lordxsal) Atari had been in the games for more then 10 years when nintendo had come along and look where they're today, how long you been around means nothing. Nintendo just fucked up with the Wii focusing more on the gimmick of motion control rather than improving graphics and better, easier to use online play. If nintendo wants to be back on top they need to adapt to the times or they'll end up like Atari and Sega

Sal Hunter I think they were trying to target the casual audience. It worked with the Wii but after that they moved on to mobile games. I think Nintendo will make a come back with the Nintendo switch.

Nintendo has said that it's not about the specs but the entertainment value you get from playing which they do have a point but it's a double edge sward. If you don't have a console that is capable of the current technology like Unreal Engine 4 and Uniti no one would want to put the amount of effort to develop and port games. Not all developers want to put the amount of effort to develop and port games as Nintendo do they just want to make it as easy and straightforward as possible to make money from the sales the game makes. I think Nintendo is finally getting it through their heads and trying to catch up with the competition with The Nintendo Switch. One developer Inti Creates was developing Blaster Master Zero originally on the 3DS and when they heard about the Nintendo Switch and once they became official developers for it and they got the dev kit in it took two months to port the game which was at the time 50% complete and have a prototype build to show and they were able to release it on The Nintendo Switch release date of March 3rd. I think Nintendo is finally getting it through their heads that not all devs want to put the amount of effort to develop and port games as they do and they shouldn't force their beliefs onto other developers. I think Nintendo should have a good look at Sony Computer Entertainment and how they do things with The PlayStation Network and the systems. Nintendo can still be their innovative and family friendly developers but with a capable system that is competitive with the other systems that on the market but have their own games and innovations that they are known for people would buy it. I think Nintendo Switch is the stepping stone for them to get back to the times so I think the next console will be powerful.
