  • Hi everyone! Today's video is going to be about the one thing that I believe all photographers should stop doing to their photos. 🙅‍♀️
    This one thing is particularly true if you are wanting to pursue commercial beauty, fashion or portrait photography.
    **One thing I also forgot to mention in this video, is not morphing or changing facial features either! **
    Let me know your thoughts below and what you believe is a major 'no no' with commercial photography! 👇

    I love that you said to stop over retouching skin. My philosophy is if a model had a bad breakout day then it's okay to remove a pimple but I love the natural texture to the skin🌸✨

      @KayleighJune  Рік тому +1

      Absolutely! I think it’s all about striking the right balance, I usually like to treat retouching almost as an extra layer of makeup, but I really love allowing natural skin texture to shine in images! 😊

      @@KayleighJune I love that mindset, I totally agree!(:

      If you’re doing broad spectrum actions such as frequency separation, you’ll lose the texture. One of the best things I’ve done to improve my work is to be far more manual in what you want and don’t want, and don’t be afraid to zoom in (but don’t forget to view full!!)

      @@hughfinnerty9558 omg I feel you on not forgetting to zoom out! Haha sometimes when I retouch I’m doing so much fine detail zoomed in and it’s like a big painting every once in awhile you gotta step back and look at the whole picture✨

  • @luisdhh
    @luisdhh Рік тому +3

    I agree with you.. lately I’m trying to avoid frequency separation because it is difficult to go back once you hace created those layers unless you create a mask, so I’m using dodge and burn, however I’m having a hard time tying to make the skin even, for example for those subjects whose skin is uneven (different textures, spotty skin, etc).

    • @KayleighJune
      @KayleighJune  Рік тому +2

      Yes I actually rarely use frequency separation with beauty, but I know that it is preferable for some other photographers! I do prefer dodge and burn as I believe it keeps more of the skin tone intact.
      It can be tricky to create an evenness across the skin tone with dodge and burn, but I think this is where global and local d&b comes into play. I actually have an updated d&b tutorial on my channel if you want to check it out! 😊

      @@KayleighJune it is a little bit difficult when working with darker skins, but little by little I’ve been improving. Your Domestika course has really helped me a lot :)

    love your topic and approach still a lot of magazine covers are way overretouched and I think nothing will change if they dont change....

    Maybe you can provide some examples of over retouching. Some of the new tools, like Evoto, do a pretty good job with one click. But I am not sure if you would consider it overdone. Using that, and other tools, could make for a good video to show what is considered too far.

    • @KayleighJune
      @KayleighJune  Рік тому +5

      Oh I’d love to do this! I just didn’t want to single out any specific photographer, but maybe I can do a video where I over-retouch some images myself to explain further.
      It’s interesting too that you mentioned the tools out there that can help with retouching. I’d love to go a bit more in depth with that topic because I’ve seen some AI tools that have done a fairly decent job, but then others that have worked more like an Instagram filter. There’s definitely a balance that needs to be met and my main rule would be to allow skin texture to show. (No blurring of pores, etc.) 🙂

      @@KayleighJune If you do this, please do it from the scope of yourself. How can a pro photographer over retouch skin and what it looks like, so we can compare it with our own images. I feel like when people talk about over retouching, they mean overly blurry skin or bad photoshop but I'm more interested into the mistakes a PRO can make, using methods like d&b and frequency separation.

    When I began I could spend 5 hours retouching the face on every picture I took. And the more I was becoming professional, the less I retouched. The first time I collaborated with a model agency 4 years ago they told me it was over retouched, I was a little disappointed at the time but they were totally right. When you like at the high end fashion photography in Vogue or Harper's from the best photographer in the industry, the pictures look very natural!
    Now I do skin retouching in just 10-15 minutes and its better.

    • @KayleighJune

      Yes it's funny isn't it! I feel the more experienced you get, the more minimal the retouching feels. 🙂

    I understand this but I do believe if you’re trying to go for the magazine editorial look is okay

    • @KayleighJune
      @KayleighJune  Рік тому +1

      I think this really depends on the magazine. Many magazine editorials have been steering towards a more raw look with retouching too, but I do agree with you to an extent. There’s a certain level of artistic freedom that comes with editorial imagery and you can push ‘digital art’ boundaries a bit more. 🙂
