- How Australian full time, slow travellers buy a car in Malaysia, to drive around Malaysia, Thailand, Cambodia and hopefully Laos (if they let us bring our car into Laos?).
We have the car transferred, registered and insured in our name, so it's all legit.
We go on to prepare the car for the massive road trip, by installing dash cams, replacing the tires, replacing some old parts in the engine to avoid any potential breakdowns in the future 🤞 get a roof boot installed and buy camping gear 😊

The spare parts for this myvi are among the cheapest and easiest available in anywhere in Malaysia. RM10,000 is quite ok price for an almost 17 years old car. The seller should have given full tank of Petrol. They earned so much for that price
My uncle (he's from scotland) bought the myvi on 2006 and the car still excellent and last long till today..he love the myvi so much

Myvi is actually a toyota in disguise. Very reliable. Mine was bought 11 years ago and never had any issue.
my cousin bought it since 2006 until today his myvis still alive in great condition my neighbors also use the SE version also bought new in 2010 his car also running today this car really reliable 👍

One thing I love about Myvi is the fact that the size of it makes parking your car so easy and it doesn't consume much fuel if compared to bigger car.

I've been saying for years that travelling Malaysia and Thailand by car is a simple and cost effective holiday by comparison to the usual Grey Nomad route.
I've subscribed and will watch your trip with interest.
Take your time at the borders and make sure you get all the car stamps. It's not hard but unfortunately moving cars cross border is much harder than taking yourself.

welcome to 'King of the road' club....hahaha my family car since 2003 and still alive rocking on the road...im used went to Thailand flea market in Krongek,Sadao every Saturday or Thursday...from my home its just took 2hours...from the Malaysia border(Bukit Kayu Hitam,Kedah) maybe around 45minutes...but because of the bad currency, I had stopped going there...6 years ago we still in the same level.. now the rate is rm100 = 700-750baht... we lost rm30

@@adventureswithtoyahandmurray 10 years ago, its like a cowboy town ..u easily can crossing without stamp your border pass..the locals just want take a breakfast there or going to massage hotel....the crazy was, my friends had got caught, then their family paid 'gift money' to the Thai police and released them in the same day..luckily im not joining them during that time

Myvi is the right choice for reliability. How many kms has it clocked? If travelling to Thailand, you will need separate Thai insurance available at the border. Looking forward to your trip. Have fun and have a wonderful adventure.

Awesome. That is relatively low mileage. Mine is the same model year albeit the SE but nearing 250k kms. Still running smooth especially the engine 🖒

Its a Malaysian plate car, you can fill it up with Ron 95 petrol
If planning to fill to the brim of the car, please check the suspension and brakes for safety.Not to forget the tyres too . May see that have good thread, years not exceed 2 years. Here rain and sunshine are unpredictable
We had the suspension replaced, along with lots of other things, we also had all the tyres replaced with brand new ones because they were 5 years old. We had everything checked and it’s all good 👍

Dont forget to buy a touch n go card as you will pass thru tens of toll plaza 😂. The card can also be used to pay for cashless street and indoor parking.
We have a touch n go card and a torch, we used the torch last night because we are camping at the moment 😄

Another Malaysian car that you could buy is the Proton Ssga. It has a booth. In my family we have owned 5 Proton Sagas, the latest and still being use is a Proton Saga FLX. My family have upgraded to newer Proton models such as Proton Preve sedan turbo (1), Exora Turbo mpv (1), Iriz hatchback (2) and X50 turbo suv (2). Non Malaysian cars include a mpv mitsubishi Xpender and a honda city sedan. Cheers

Instead of Rent a car, you bought one. Thats rare. But it really a good choice anyway! Thats cost saving alot.
Perodua Myvi 1st gen is originally a Daihatsu Sirion / Boon or Toyota Passo. So the durabilty is undeniedable . Hence you wouldn't have a problem for the car parts at all even IF you using it to Thai and other SEA country.

Add turbo unit. Add extractor and change spark plug to iridium. Replace suspension with hi-lo, hard-soft absorber. Add stabiliser bar. U r good to fly

Welcome to Malaysia, this is a good way to travel around Malaysia using the 1st gen Myvi.
Here's a few checklist, that you need to add into your car.
#1. Try get a good set of spot lights to install on the front, beside replacing the driving lights with better quality bulbs as some of the area at night aren't that bright in some of the outskirts rural area compare to the main town.
#2. A set of toolbox and hand gloves, will come in handy especially when needed for qiuck repairs.
#3. A good pair of working torch 🔦 to place in the car for standby
#4 Try fix a lamp both in the car boot and inside the roof rack for easier locating item during in the night.
#5. Do replace the brake fluid and brake pad for safety reasons even though they are working fine now.

Malaysian cars are known for it's toughness and reliability considering the 'challenging' road conditions here. Be it Perodua or Proton, both excelled quite nicely in terms of longevity of use. Yeah it may break down sometimes, but nothing no sideroad's mechanic couln't fix.

BTW, 30L for RM90, so you buy RON97 fuel(green). As far as I know, for Myvi, RON95(yellow) is more than enough. Cheaper too.

I suggest you install tint on your car window to prevent heat and UV rays and to protect the glass from breaking.
