RE7 is one of my favorite games in a long time. I loved seeing them go back to their roots for a lot of design aspects. The first person approach actually worked really well with it and ultimately made the experience both refreshing and nostalgic. How is that even possible? I don't know, and I don't care; I can't stop replaying this game and I'm craving more. Speaking of which, time to play Madhouse with unlimited ammo; watch the fuck out mold monsters-here I come.

While I haven't played the game myself yet, I have to agree that one of the biggest issues with Final Fantasy these days is the abandonment of fantasy, in favor of these weird semi-sci-fi settings. I guess this has to do with the fact that Square, for the past 20 years now, have been obsessed with creating another Final Fantasy VII (with the exception of games like IX, Tactics and maybe XII), desperately attempting to emulate its success, while having little to no idea what made it one to begin with.
I'm not upset about the boyband music whatsoever. Fits right into the context, doesn't detract from the character since it's not a recurring thing. Monsieur Razeurfouixst knows what he's doing.
That after credits bit with cup noodles an actual scene from the game? Cuz that is just blatantly product placement, as in I thought it was an actual joke that you made. I'm really not sure cuz I wouldn't be surprised if it was real.

I felt that had they added in like 4 open world chapters in-between chapter 14 and 15, and cut some of the fat out of the early game, FFXV would have been incredible. I enjoyed it a lot and sunk 60 hours into it (which I haven't done in an RPG for quite a while), though it did have some disjointed story moments and some Grand Canyon-sized pacing issues.
As someone who routinely writes urban fantasy stories, I was actually on board with the modern setting 15 was sporting, but I was never sure how the final product was going to do. And now...Eh, I guess I can check it out when the price drops.

Honestly I'm not going to lie but I enjoyed XIII a hell of a lot more than XV. Say what you will about the quality of the plot but it at least had one. XV just has a bunch of random cutscenes all glued together with no cohesiveness whatsoever. And at the end of the day I at least felt like I was playing a jrpg not a watered down western RPG. XV at least for me a was a complete disappointment and one that was certainly not worth the 10 year wait for something that is being compared to the "worst" FF (XIII)

The worst FF is obviously XV, because, it's not even a Final Fantasy game and it's unfinished product sold at full price. Even Tabata says it's unfinished, which is why Square Enix is STILL working on the game.

Nearly a decade later, Crystal Chronicles is still by far my favorite game with "Final Fantasy" in the title. We used to take our characters to the bucolic farm town, run off into a field, and position our characters facing each other in a circle. Then we'd form a real-life circle of our own and smoke a blunt. We did this every time we smoked, and to this day no Final Fantasy game has left me with such fond memories. I'd guess it has something to do with the whole "local multiplayer" thing that they failed to ever properly replicate in subsequent games. Oh, and the game was really fun, too.

Am i the only one that found the "war" more interesting than this boy band simulator ? i wanted to see the large scale war i wanted to see struggle and chaos set in the FF world with magic and machine clashing, not search half the planet for the best cup of instant noodles.
I'm enjoying the game so far. Don't really care about the product placement of the car since I cared more about killing shit, hearing people bitching about dubstep is basically an internet checklist at this point ("it's basically I hate it because internet" not saying that's you, you actually give reasons), but the Cup Noodle placement is annoying as hell. I like the stuff but fuck we get it they paid money for it. At least with past ads in FF games they stayed in Japan and you rarely saw them.

I remember watching a stream and i did a doubletake when i saw the Coleman logo. For me that breaks immersion hard i could never get into the story while seeing these irl brands. I think they did it recoup some of the money on development.
If you're a PC gamer and like turn based JRPGs, I would recommend Trails in the Sky (also known as Sora no Kiseki) if you sort of want that old school JRPG experiance. Trails is my favourite JRPG series ever, and I've played Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG. The combat is a lot like Final Fantasy X, which personally is one of the best things about FFX with light SRPG elements in the sense of character positioning being important. Be warned it does have cutscenes rivaling Metal Gear Solid and there is a lot of reading, but the writing is excellent and so are the characters. If you feel like Trails in the Sky could be a bit better, well Trails in the Sky SC improves on the first one, you have to beat the original Trails in the Sky first, since SC picks up where the first one left off. Trails in the Sky the 3rd is being localized as we speak with release window of Spring 2017. Music wise the first Trails game has a some jazz music and some kind of elevator music, but the second game has a couple of metal like soundtracks, it's made by the same developers of the Ys series (Nihon Falcom) who's soundtrack has a lot of metal like soundtracks. Personally the first Trails game IMO has the weakest (not bad) music. Zero no Kieski (Trails to Zero? Sadly it's not localised), Ao no Kiseki (Trails in the Blue?) and Trails of Cold Steel have amazing soundtracks. Look up "Get over the Barrier" which is Zero's standard battle theme and "Glint of Cold Steel" which is Cold steel's standard battle theme.
One thing I also like about Trails to the Sky series is that it keeps the melodrama to a tasteful minimum compared to some JRPGs. If anyone's reading this it's definitely a good buy and the best part, the first two games are on Steam. Get that shit.
As if you being a fan of the series is a surprise given the Avatar, but yeah I actually really enjoyed Trails in the Sky and I generally do not enjoy JRPGs - it is also the most difficult JRPG I have played and combat remained interesting throughout the game and the lore was tastefully sprinkled though dialogue and was not overbearing (unlike FF12) and the main way of gathering lore was one hunting for it (again unlike FF12). The worst thing about Trails in the Sky is that it is impossible to abbreviate and be taken seriously.
What can I say? I like Estelle and this is one of her best facial expressions. But I do agree, these games are very long and split into 2 to 3 games. Well The 3rd is considered to be an offshoot, it seems to have a strong connection with what happened at the end of SC. But Falcom have done it in a way where you can start at any story arc, but not start in the middle of it, that's kind of a no, no. I think quite a few people got into to the series first with Cold Steel. be prepared for the long haul when you play these games. Not to mention the games warrant a second playthrough, since I pick up on things that didn't see the first time around, but maybe that's just me.
That lore statement is very true. In finding little bits here and there and getting invested you WANT to find out more about the story and so you hunt for it. Very rare for a RPG let alone a JRPG to do that to me.
They tried to appeal to people outside of their usual revenue model, without actually changing their revenue model? While tailoring the entire gameplay and aesthetic of the game towards product placement? I'm curious to see the sales of their next game, because I suspect that the series has just committed suicide.
To me it just felt like they forgot they were making a Final Fantasy game a third of the way through and wanted to make Fallout instead.

Am i the only one that found the "war" more interesting than this boy band simulator ? i wanted to see the large scale war i wanted to see struggle and chaos set in the FF world with magic and machine clashing, not search half the planet for the best cup of instant noodles.

They made a movie about that set just before the game. I dont suggest it for you tho, its still character drama driven thing.

I'm enjoying the game so far.
Don't really care about the product placement of the car since I cared more about killing shit, hearing people bitching about dubstep is basically an internet checklist at this point ("it's basically I hate it because internet" not saying that's you, you actually give reasons), but the Cup Noodle placement is annoying as hell.
I like the stuff but fuck we get it they paid money for it.
At least with past ads in FF games they stayed in Japan and you rarely saw them.

animeasskicker look for dubstep pre 2011 you'll find what it's really meant to sound like I hate that the Internet is all dubstep hate yet only hear the new really annoying sounding tracks once it got big America, where no offence but the whole feel and sound of dubstep got raped by robots, listen to chillstep even.

Sad thing is that 4 years later, Final Fantasy XV has sold ~8.5-9 million copies. It had to sell 10 million (in that one article briefly shown at the start) in order to just break even. Ouch.

I remember watching a stream and i did a doubletake when i saw the Coleman logo. For me that breaks immersion hard i could never get into the story while seeing these irl brands. I think they did it recoup some of the money on development.

If you're a PC gamer and like turn based JRPGs, I would recommend Trails in the Sky (also known as Sora no Kiseki) if you sort of want that old school JRPG experiance. Trails is my favourite JRPG series ever, and I've played Chrono Trigger and Super Mario RPG. The combat is a lot like Final Fantasy X, which personally is one of the best things about FFX with light SRPG elements in the sense of character positioning being important. Be warned it does have cutscenes rivaling Metal Gear Solid and there is a lot of reading, but the writing is excellent and so are the characters. If you feel like Trails in the Sky could be a bit better, well Trails in the Sky SC improves on the first one, you have to beat the original Trails in the Sky first, since SC picks up where the first one left off. Trails in the Sky the 3rd is being localized as we speak with release window of Spring 2017.
Music wise the first Trails game has a some jazz music and some kind of elevator music, but the second game has a couple of metal like soundtracks, it's made by the same developers of the Ys series (Nihon Falcom) who's soundtrack has a lot of metal like soundtracks. Personally the first Trails game IMO has the weakest (not bad) music. Zero no Kieski (Trails to Zero? Sadly it's not localised), Ao no Kiseki (Trails in the Blue?) and Trails of Cold Steel have amazing soundtracks. Look up "Get over the Barrier" which is Zero's standard battle theme and "Glint of Cold Steel" which is Cold steel's standard battle theme.
One thing I also like about Trails to the Sky series is that it keeps the melodrama to a tasteful minimum compared to some JRPGs. If anyone's reading this it's definitely a good buy and the best part, the first two games are on Steam. Get that shit.
As if you being a fan of the series is a surprise given the Avatar, but yeah I actually really enjoyed Trails in the Sky and I generally do not enjoy JRPGs - it is also the most difficult JRPG I have played and combat remained interesting throughout the game and the lore was tastefully sprinkled though dialogue and was not overbearing (unlike FF12) and the main way of gathering lore was one hunting for it (again unlike FF12).
The worst thing about Trails in the Sky is that it is impossible to abbreviate and be taken seriously.
What can I say? I like Estelle and this is one of her best facial expressions. But I do agree, these games are very long and split into 2 to 3 games. Well The 3rd is considered to be an offshoot, it seems to have a strong connection with what happened at the end of SC. But Falcom have done it in a way where you can start at any story arc, but not start in the middle of it, that's kind of a no, no. I think quite a few people got into to the series first with Cold Steel. be prepared for the long haul when you play these games. Not to mention the games warrant a second playthrough, since I pick up on things that didn't see the first time around, but maybe that's just me.
That lore statement is very true. In finding little bits here and there and getting invested you WANT to find out more about the story and so you hunt for it. Very rare for a RPG let alone a JRPG to do that to me.
Glad to see Trails in the Sky get some love on here. Nihon Falcom is probably the only company keeping the old school style alive these days.

While tailoring the entire gameplay and aesthetic of the game towards product placement? I'm curious to see the sales of their next game, because I suspect that the series has just committed suicide.
