- A Christmas Festival (Parts 1 & 2) (Anderson) by Leroy Anderson and his “Pops” Concert Orchestra
At the request of Boston Pops conductor Arthur Fiedler, Dr. Anderson arranged the well-known piece consisting of nine familiar Christmas melodies. This first recording of it by Anderson was released over two sides of a single 78rpm and 45rpm record in time for the 1952 holiday season. His more commonly-reissued stereo version of “A Christmas Festival’ was not recorded until 1959, but this post is from the original 1952 mono single.

My highschool band performed this wonderful piece in Dec 1964. I was the nubile and very green tuba player for the band. The other bass player was ill and I had the bass line to myself. My grandfather was sitting in the school auditorium. He was a WW1 vet and had played in an Army band, as a Sousaphone player. The grand, sweeping Christmas songs carried the young orchestra into the musical ether. My grandpa was pleased and I felt relieved , surrounded by the Spirit of the Season.
nice addition to the Xmas playlist- like an introduction to the top 100 or something...
Takes me back to the 1960s, playing this on my parents' Bush record player.....
this the very recording I asked about earlier only it was on a 78 thanks so much for bringing back wonderful childhood memories !
You are most welcome! By 1952 the identical single releases were being issued in both 45 and 78 speeds, and this has long been a particular favorite of mine, too!
This is fantastic!!!
Perfectly, absolutely, wonderfully Christmas.
My parents had this recording, but it was on a 78. Wonderful memories.
A little more convoluted than the concert band version; beautiful and historic.
Dang, now I wanna cut into the Christmas ham and scoop some mashed potatoes on my plate with this tune in the background.
It is a bit more than a "tune."
This is the original 8:48 version of A Christmas Festival completed by Leroy Anderson on June 12, 1950. In 1952 Leroy Anderson shortened the work to 5:45 by eliminating The First Noel and shortening the other pieces. It is one of his most popular and most performed works - worldwide.
According to what I've read, Anderson first _performed_ "A Christmas Festival" on the June date that you cite but made this original first recording of it on October 27, 1952. Where can the 1959 stereo-remake of "A Christmas Festival" be found?
Wow, this was all on one 45?
Yes, using narrower grooves, both 45 & 78 singles had no trouble accommodating 4 1/2 minutes per side by the 1950s.
