  • At 6.30am on this date at the Volunteer Park, The Hon Provost Watson McAteer charged Cornet Connor Brunton to ride the meiths and marches of the commonty of Hawick to check they were in good order.
The Cornet replied to the charge and proceeded to the Coble Cauld on horseback along with his Right & Left-hand men and Acting Senior Magistrate, Acting Father Alistair Crawford, to dip the un-bussed colour. The Lasses were also in attendance at this ceremony.
Following the marking of that boundary, they then rode via Buccleuch Street, Beaconsfield Terrace, The Loan, Rosebank, the Nipknowes, round by St Leonards, Williestruther and around Acreknowe, and headed to the furthermost boundary point, where a sod was cut in the customary time-honoured fashion.
This ceremony was witnessed by the Chairman, Vice-Chairman, Master of Ceremonies and Assistant Master of Ceremonies of Hawick Common Riding Committee.
The Silver Jubilee Cornet, Ex-Cornet Alan Wear, read the oration at the Cutting of the Sod. This was followed by the singing of Teribus, led by the Official Song-singer Michael Aitken.
The Cornet then passed the un-bussed colour to the Acting Senior Magistrate who carried this to the Moor gates before handing this back to the Cornet to ride with around the Moor racecourse. The Cornet then returned the un-bussed colour to The Hon Provost in the paddock, who accepted its return and thanked the Cornet on behalf of the people of Hawick in carrying out this important ceremonial duty.
The Halberdiers were in attendance and read the Proclamation. The singing of Teribus, led again by the Official Song-singer, concluded events for 2021. The proclamation was then signed as tradition demands.
The Marking of our Boundaries was carried out in accordance with strict guidelines agreed with Scottish Borders Council and Police Scotland. No advertising of these events was permitted to take place.
