- Ahoy fisho's! What a video I have for you this week! I go out chasing extra large mackerel trolling dead baits. As is often the case, if you fish big baits, you catch big fish... and after a bit of a wobbly start, that's exactly what happened! Of course it wouldn't be a episode without a little bit of drama as well would it!
Throughout this episode I also run through the best practice for how to store your fish on the boat, filleting your catch as well as how to freeze your fillets without losing any quality. All useful things to know before your next session.

If you could note the name/source of the hardware used to rig the bait - The weight with push through stiff wires and hook, and does it come with trailing hooks or have to be rigged with the stingers?

P.S. I called that one for 23kg when it hit the deck, good fish.
I usually have a hand as well for lifting the fillet. Have had a time trial and can whip the sides off a 10-15kg Mack in 52 seconds, I’ll have to try send ya the video.

Nice filleting mate. If you want to see an absolute gun rip fillets off a fish, watch Fishing The Wild when they are on the WildCard boat. Old mate processes a Spanish in about 10 seconds. He also probably does 100 of them a day.

You can run a spoon along the ribs/spine to get any flesh you might have missed. These smaller bits are good for sashimi or in a risotto/pasta.

Hi Sammy little tip with the backbone get a spoon and rake the backbone meat comes off real easy like mince use it for fish cake

You’re not alone mate, nothing like seeing a well packed bag sucked dry 😳😄. Then the fun of stacking it in the freezer knowing you’ve fed the family for a week👍🏻. Duck season opens in Vic on Wednesday so hopefully there’ll be some duck next to the fish in the freezer🍺🍺🇦🇺🇦🇺

Hey Sammy, great vid. A quick question about the line you use for trolling on your overheads. Do you use braid or mono straight through and also what line class for the macs? I've recently purchased my 1st overhead trolling outfit of a tyrnos 20 and a 15-24kg trolling rod and wondering what line class and leader to run with for similar fishing. Cheers 👍

I use a similar rig but sometimes i run my baits behind a stainless paravane to get them down 5-10 mtrs, or whatever you require.
Try in future to just cut strait thru one side of the gills. Actually thru the hard boney/ frilly part. Then strop/rope his tail and hang with head just in the water ten mins.. Then ice/pack..
Also You may not be making mac vids in the future with the Qld Govt DAF Fisheries looking to potentially close East coast fishery due to Low mac stocks. looked like there were plenty out there to me. I certainly havnt seen any difference in numbers up North.
Yeah mate not sure what will happen with those new government restrictions. Hopefully they don’t start making rules without some real facts!

Me n a mate used a 450mm rainbow runner as a floating bait. The 4 9/0 gangs just made it to the dorsal. Happy days a 35kg 1.6mtr Spanish Mack chomped down on it. Nearly a km later chasing it, woohoo. Check out Reef Addicts for the action.

You should quarter a fish that size and cut the fillets in sections to make it more manageable. Its too hard to make a nice clean job with bigger fish taking a whole side off as you said.
Yeah any bigger I reckon I would quarter it like we do with the tuna 👌👌
