We planted 163 tomato plants of numerous varieties ...90Jetstar! My wife and I have had the caning equipment out in the kitchen about a week now we're working on 70 quarts..our goal is 100. We have a big family and will need at least half of that this year! But, we think having to may tomatoes is like having too much money...ain't no such thing! BTW..your Florida Weave 'take down' is impressive & envious!💪💪
Well crap a minute. 163 plants is at least 500 jars!!! I'm thinking something is wrong with growing medium. What are you doing with them anyway??? Grand Blessings to everyone everywhere.
@@MissBetsyLu Yea...a few to many, but we're getting closer to our goal...a good number of those are "tomato juice", so a lot of waste, unfortunately for us but fotunately for the chickens & compost! We felt like we had great quality & productive crop of tomatoes this year! Lots of work, but worth it!
Hey Travis, make sure you film Titus eating watermelon next time. We watched him eat melons before and he loves them! In fact last year he was wolfing down a tomato like it was the best thing he ever ate! That boy loves to eat! 😂
After all the canning last year (and still have a ton of jars left), I decided to plant a lot fewer maters...only 11 plants, mostly the big slicers for fresh eating. However, i started a bunch extra for selling, but didnt sell them all. Hubby said "put them all in the garden." No room for over 100 extras, but I ended up putting out 32 more. So much for not planting as many this year...
“That’s not a Watermelon plant” is said in my garden as well as a whole lot of “That’s not a Tomato plant” and many other plants as well! 😂 Great video 👍🏼
I shoot for 52 quarts of canned stewed tomatoes. Some years I get it and some I don't. This year....so far Ive canned 67 quarts along with gobs of tomato juice, Rotel, marinara sauce, and V8. I'm just about tired of canning all the things tomato.....but I know they will be so good throughout the year. I just noticed this evenin that I need to pic tomatoes again.
I grew 80 determinate 16 indeterminate slicers and 16 cherry tomatoes. I will never go that big again! But im glade i showed myself i could.think ill focus those efforts towards long storage crops or more diversity in the future 😅
I planted 48 this year and lost 3 so far to Fusarium Wilt but even with a couple of weeks of 100+ degree temps I’m still getting blossoms and fruit, although it’s slowed considerably, thanks to a couple of 70% shade cloths. For S TX that’s about a miracle. I’m going to try and nurse them through to fall but if not I’ve got a few more waiting to be planted.
I will be starting my fall tomatoes pretty soon. One month under lights indoors. Up pot from party cups to 2 gallon grow bags then to the final 7 gallon grow bag. By the time they get going with flowers it will be about September 15 or so and still too hot here in Charleston to self pollinate but a couple weeks with the little paint brush hitting flower clusters works until it gets below 70 at night when the real fruit set comes on. I grow early varieties for fall. Last year I was later and the Arctic blast hit me hard. This year I will be done before Christmas. I am going to try some of the "Mountain" determinates this fall since I could never grow them in heat.
We are having a terrible tomato year in Maine. Too much rain. Many gardeners will not have any production and no time to restart. It's a sad year up here.
Nice final harvest of tomatoes❤ Nice watermelon in different varieties, I wonder will we see the Ducks this Year? 🐤 I saw in the background the chickens are nearly finished their green manure crop😊

Awesome watermelons ! Yes, bombed by Leaf-legged kamikazes !! and noticed that tomato looked bad and I wondered if they wreathe cause of it's curled and yellowing leaves.
The native quail have been making a bit of a come back the last decade or so here in south GA. But they're pretty easy targets for predators. I rarely see one, but I hear them all the time in those pine trees.
Yep. And we need to replant bush beans, zucc, summer squash, beets, carrots, now(!) Pretty much the whole list of fast summer crops can be replanted in all but maybe Alaska. And some there too. Still time before Fall crops are started. Plant fast summer crops now (maybe in summer garden space. Or in containers). I just started community garden with only 5-gallon buckets. Many beautiful blessings everyone.
The Jolene tomato, which replaces the Grand Marshal is a really good tomato. They are doing better than any tomato variety i am gowing big time. Is the flavor as good as some of the heirloom varieties no, but for a reliable canning tomato, the Joline is a winner.
I didn't know Jolene was replacing Grand Marshall. I've grown both and found Grand Marshall to be much more productive, although I wasn't super impressed with the plant vigor of either.
I only need what I want to eat and can for different things, so I'd say maybe 20 would be enough if they are heavy producers, and very meaty. Hey Trav what's the heaviest producer you've grown, not counting cherry tomatoes.
The heaviest producer might have been that Grand Marshall tomato that we trialed last year. The plants didn't look fabulous and the tomatoes weren't as big as Red Snapper or Roadster, but they made tons of tomatoes.
My question is, you said you play the "thats not a watermelon plant" game 30-60 minutes before it gets dark. Is there a reason you wait until then to do it instead of earlier in the day?
@LazyDogFarm Makes sense. First time I planted some watermelon and I'm having the same issue. Weeds popping up in the patch among all the vining. I thought maybe it was because during the day, bees are all over the flowers, but they usually gone towards the evening.
I've planted 120ish tomatoes the last couple years. Never again. My girlfriend flooded the garden and killed every one of them. Now she's an ex girlfriend. I replanted and the southwest Louisiana heat has been whoopin em down. I'm about half and half determinant/ heirloom. No more heirloom tomatoes for me. Maybe a few to try something new but it's gonna be lemonboy, red snapper, and a roma type at least for the next planting. And no more than 30 plants. I enjoy growing stuff I can put up, corn, peas, etc. So my tomato space will be greatly reduced.

Haven't heard one in years here in Virginia

I agree with your tomato estimate. 15 plants is enough for a family, if you will be canning as juice, sauce or stewed.
I “needed” to plant about 50 dwarf tomatoes from 5 or 6 varieties this year. Some were winners, others not so much, but we have a LOT of tomatoes!

I usually overdo the tomato plants, maybe it's an addiction idk lol.
Do you plant fall tomatoes? Our tomato crop was horrible this spring and i am iching to try again....thanks!
I don't. We're usually tired of tomatoes come mid July.
Came for the tomatoes, stayed for the melons

You have an adorable family, really enjoyed this video. I love the way your farm is set up so organized. do you ever grow edamame?
We grow soybeans as a cover crop to feed our soil and chickens.
I started cutting some of my maters down today mostly romas no more romas for me they have the toughest skin i ever seen
