Many people forget to clean & lubricate the cable guide tube before feeding the steering cable through. It’s actually part of regular annual maintenance. Gets gummed up & sticky in there.
Man I have worked and worked on my steering issues for weeks now. This video could answer a very important question of mine. My steering cable seems to be acting up like this one but my question is hard and long to type out. Is there anyway possible to speak to you on the phone? Thank you
Can you tell me the length of the cable and the length of the Sea Ray Sundeck? I have on 06 240 Sundeck. Pretty sure I need to replace my steering cable but can’t seem to find length I need
@@OutdoorsmanChannel What year Sea Ray Sundeck did you change out the steering cable on? And about how many hours did it take? Mine is a 2008 220, just bought it has less than 300 hours, it looks like my fluid is low, so I’m going to top that off today , any suggestion on what fluid to use? Is it specific for this boat?
It was a 2005 SR sundeck 220. Suggest you refer to the owners manual which will tell you fluid to use. Probably Mercury Marine ps fluid. The 2005 looks like an old GM power steering pump. Don't recall how long it took to replace cable it was less than 6 hours Probably. One issue is getting the large nuts loose on the steering rack behind the engine. You need big open end wrenches. Long handle versions. Mine were bigger than 1" nuts. Suggest getting a repair manual to walk you thru it. Center steering wheel alignment took a few tries also. I am an associate of the Outdoorsman channel. Good luck.
Before you get started see what size wrenches you need to get the nuts off at the power steering end. I had to get a really big 1 1/8 open end wrench and maybe a 15/16 wrench. Big ones, maybe 16inches long to get the nuts off. A large adjustable wrench just would not get enough torque on it. This was the hardest part of the job. I am an associate of the outdoorsman channel. Good luck.
Question: with the steering cable disconnected from the drive.. How hard is it to push the drive left and right by hand? Is it like a 2 finger action or does it still require a bit of effort?
I am an associate of the outdoorsman channel. It is hard to recall. With the cable disconnected you still have the power assist actuator. With the engine off it is hard to imagine you can move it easily.
right now we call mine "thanos steering" -- ive taken it off at the helm before but ive never taken it off from the rear as it is connected to the steering hydraulics with a large nut
97 mariah 5.7 mercruiser bravo 3 -- have no idea of the length would guess about 15ft,, im guessing there is some part number on the old one ill have to examine
Oh boy really old boat. Oh boy 2000 50 boy you better retire it cut it up. I’ve been driving at 79 for years and after all these years and finally this year in 2023 finally the steering starting to lock up oh boy, I better worry about my old boat.
Thanks.
I'm pulling my cable free tomorrow. I can try it while still in the boat.
Great idea attaching a rope.
Thanks again.

How did you get the cable off from the engine side. I have the same boat.. It looks like a pin ?
Thanks for a very helpful video. Now to do the deed!
Thanks man . I think this is the problem with my Bayliner 195 as it’s so heavy to steer .
No problem. Hope you fix it!!
Thank you for the video. Just got a 2000 Bayliner Capri, and Hercules couldn't turn this steering wheel. I'm betting the same problem

how much time/# of hours did it take you to replace the steering cable
Probably 2-6 hours depends on the boat. Ours had decent access.

Also I must ask. Are you working on your gauges? Saw them out
Yes I have another video on the channel about how we got them repaired.

Do you have power steering on that boat ? What if you have hard steering with power steering?
Yes we do have power steering. We still had hard steering and this fixed the issue.
