- Alpe d’Huez, with its iconic 21 hairpin bends, is the most famous Tour de France climb. But can a non-road cyclist make it to the top? We’ve enlisted the help of Blake Samson from @gmbn to find out if a rider built for flying down hills, not going up them, can survive this legendary mountain. This is MTB freestyler vs Alpe d’Huez!

Amazing effort. I’m sure I heard Blake say on GMBN he hated climbing with the MTB, so to climb all the way up Alpe D’Huez is incredible. I feel like Hank was barely trying. He was never out of breath and was quite comfortable. He makes a great motivational coach though, egging him on all the way up and being really positive. They make a great pairing. It would be great to see Blake learning the downhill technicalities which, given both are thrill-seekers, would be highly entertaining. They’re like two children getting new toys on Christmas Day. We don’t get enough crossovers!

Rode the Alp in 2003 to watch the tour. One of the most amazing experiences of my life. I had been mountain biking and climbing in the the French Alps with a friend for a few week. Rode up on an old Specialized RockHopper. Should I share my time? 1 hour 15 on a mountain bike with no lockout on the forks. But I had been at altitude for 2 weeks at least. And we had thousands of people at the side of the rode cheering us on and we were riding up with the biggest bunch of cyclists I have ever been with.
Amazing job Blake! MTB rider representing. Get another climbing stage under your belt. LET'S GO!!!

I haven't ridden in like 5 years due to a series of knee injuries, but now I feel like im finally recovering enough to ride again. I've gained about 90 lbs (~40 kg) and have let my fitness fall to the wayside. Once I get back into shape, I plan on finding my own way up the Alpe D'Huez and the Col De Tourmalet. Maybe even ride in the Etape du Tour one day

I rode up in in 2016 on the Marmot sportive it killed me I was 6888 across the line out of 6889 1200 didn't finish and I did sprint the last 100 meters just for the hell of it .

No doubts at all! Blake is a fit and strong athlete with the lungs to do it.
GCN should do a duathlon. A road section up the Spittal of Glenshee all the way to Tomintoul via the Lecht, then onto the MTB at Glen Livet.

Loving the Hank and Blake bromance
Myself and my family sat on hairpin 7 for several hours with a temperatures in the 40s degrees C on the Alpe d'Huez. The riders came up the mountain at a crazily fast pace but what was even more amazing was that I think this was the 5th mountain climb of the day.
When you see the pros in person it is pretty mind blowing!

Seriously tho if you want to attemp such a thing, in summer : early morning or late afternoon is the way to go (bring a wind breaker for the descent) in order to not have to deal with the heat on top of the exercice
