- This is a video of an Academic Parent Teacher Team (APTT) meeting at Stanton Elementary school in Southeast Washington, D.C.. APTT is a family engagement strategy that aims to provide parents the information they need to be effective partners in supporting their childrens' education. The APTT model was developed in the Creighton school district in Phoenix, Arizona by Maria Paredes.
Nice model, but how would this work with middle or high school parents? Most teachers will have any where from 100-165 students in a day.
Have sessions with smaller groups and stagger sessions. If training takes 2 hours, have the next group come in after, rotation stations can work with each station parents practicing a part of Dibels, experience it.After they demonstrate mastery move to the next station, use some. You could do small groups of people or you can fill an auditorium or Multi Purpose Room.
I dont feel that I get a one to one with the teacher because now is a big meeting. If I try to talk to the teacher in private about my child, they wouldn't have time because other parents would like to do the same thing. So once the teacher is done with this meeting, thats about it. The meetings are held way late, not every parent is a stay home parent, some of us work and its hard to get off from work, so If you dont end up going then your child suffers. That has been my experience so far with this.
Epperson, the APTT model should include also includean individual conference during the year. You should be given an opportunity to discuss your child's progress anytime during the year these meetings shouldn't be an inconvenience they were created to do the opposite. Make sure you let the school know how you feel. I hope they will find a time that is convenient for you.
Adrienne Eaglin my comment is 3 years old...different circumstances apply now and this is all irrelevant.
