If you don't like great music, you can skip ahead to 7:45 to watch the drum solo.
I am not sure where or when this performance is from, but it's my favorite recording of Buddy and his amazing band. The band is phenomenal. The sax and bass is awesome. I am not aware of anything for sale with this recording. Forgive me Cathy, but I think people should see this. I am permanently disabled and just do what I can to bring enjoyment and joy into as many peoples lives as I can.
"An undisputed master - skip to 7:45 if you must for the pure solo. Buddy pushed technique and control to the limit but he, unlike many drummers since also with excellent chops, possessed great musical sense. Remember kids; There are few if any great rock bands without a great drummer, and great drummers do not have to have great chops, only play well to create interest and drive the music. The Greatest drummer that ever drew breath
Bernard "Buddy" Rich
[ "ONE OF A KIND" ]
🥁 🥁 🥁 🥁 🥁 🥁
🎶 🎵 🎼 👍👌❤😇🔥🔥🔥🔥🔥🙏🙏👋👋👋👋
There are no words in any language to describe Buddy's playing on this video.
One of the great things about buddy rich was how he demonstrated just how many drums you don't need.
My brain can't even register what he's doing.
This is no longer drumming, there has to be another term for it.
Pure Genius.
@@muslimwillingandunwilling7576 I said my brain couldn't register what he's doing as a figure of speech to say he's good. I'm not actually saying I can't register it.
@@muslimwillingandunwilling7576 So why don't you move to the Middle East and become some savage's piece of property? Good times await you...
Since he said he never practiced, I guess he is practicing now while performing! RIP hero.
the great drummer stan levy was ever so right when he said that when buddy started to solo he made us all look like children.
The Patron Saint of The Drumset. Buddy was, and always will be, KING. Poise. Grace. Attitude. Musicality. Skills. Power. Technique. Buddy Rich is The Frank Sinatra of DRUMMING. 'nuff said.
He makes it look so effortless, ho hum, like a walk in the park, he looks like he's going to yawn, and I'm sweating just looking at him play.......that's how good he is. A humming birds fluttering their wings can't keep up with his sticks. This clip is definitely insane. I'm speechless.
An F5 tornado coupled with Hurricane Thelma, could spit buddy out, and the guy would still land on his feet lol!
After this solo everyone else is a joke!
Pretty much, yea. lol
Greatest drummer of all time, without a doubt.had the pleasure of being on stage with his daughter kathy in Liverpool in the seventies and was invited back stage, in the interval by buddy. Being only a couple of yards away from him while he was drumming was mind blowing. I was very lucky to get the chance to watch him up close. I will never forget that day.
I wish everyone in the audience
would STF up!!!
I see your point. However, Buddy fed on PRAISE. That encouraged him (like as if he needed it)LOL.
There’s clips of him telling the audience to “Shut up” while he’s soloing!!!
Buddy was a Drummer who after watching him can make you leave with your head on backwards. His Left hand and Right foot could sing. His Precision and Timing was just incredible. I and my Father had many good and pleasant times with Buddy and watching him perform, even when he did not feel like it, would leave us in awe. Truly, Buddy Rich was and still is in the Hearts of many, the Greatest Drummer who ever picked up a pair of sticks. Say what you want, he was a Drummers, DRUMMER.
To second what the previous commentator said this is no longer drumming this is something else entirely buddy rich was something else entirely watch channel one suite the drum solo you are watching is insane fantastic
After seeing the man perform live (like I did probably some 36,763 times) you just get up and, with wobbley legs, attempt to get to the exit door without stumbling, you just cannotquit thinking and attemting to realize what you just saw! No words to describe it.
36,763 times? Did you go on the road with him, were you in his band? You would have stories! lucky guy !
Thank you so much rbogan9199. That was wonderful. Buddy demanded the best from his band because, he simply was the best. I hope you have more coming in the future.
I am lost for words - simply phenominal playing by the whole band!
No better drummer than Buddy his patterns ,speed endurance dynamics, his left hand leaves all other drummers wishing that they could do half of what this man could do
man, he was ON. best clip i've ever seen of him, the crowd knew what they were witnessing and buddy was eating it up!
God could be a drummer coudn't play better than this!
I saw buddy twice in 80/81 ive never forgotten it! phenomenal!
First time I ever heard this first one.
I hear it, but I can't tell what he's doing.
One of a kind. The best there will ever be.
There is only One “Greatest Drummer”, And you’re watching Him…….
This clip is insane.... In a great way!
Traditional or match grip, he could do anything he wanted. Every shot in the book. Thanks for posting rbo.
You're welcome.
It's a Bob Mintzer chart called 'Saturday Night'. It's on the 'Man From Planet Jazz' (1980) album. It's Bob Coassin on lead trumpet, and, I think, Turk Mauro on baritone.
I believe you are correct about it being "Saturday Night" The second part where he does the solo is the beginning of "Channel One Suite".
Woooohooooo! What a great post! Loved those live concerts back then. I saw him a lot during the 70s & 80s. Hey guys, check out my tribute clips to Buddy's style of playing on here. No, I don't think I play like Buddy Rich. But I am one of the few drummers out there still trying to keep this way of playing alive as best I can. I hate to see this great tradition lost to the past with all the mediocre playing that seems to be out there today.
Relentless effortless blistering spanked accents stop 'n starts .....
I need to go lie down now ..... 🌟 👑
Just WOW.
His rolls were lethal.....
Uma LENDA chamada Buddy Rich! ! ! ! !🌠
Rare to see him using an alternate grip.
Being that great is simply insane!
I didn't know anyone play that fast , let's say you could think of him as the SIX MILLION DOLLAR MAN ON DRUMS
This is Great.
Yep. Buddy Rich played the drums like an expert that he was while the rest of the band played clams. Thanks for sharing this, btw.
Amazing!!!
They are some very seasoned players, I'll definitely give them that.
Thanks for posting this video! Awesome stuff!!
This video has to be from 1979 or after. At the 9:05 mark I can clearly see the rounded corners of the Ludwig "Blue and Olive" badge on Buddy's tom.
In 1979 Ludwig changed it's pointy cornered badge for a rounded corner version because of drummer complaints. The pointed corners were catching on things and bending the aluminum badges. Skin was among the things that it could get caught on too. Ouch!
7/79
Channel One Suite. My favorite Buddy Rich jam.
Impressionnant!!
me he quedado muda e hipnotizada. Grandioso.
An undisputed master - skip to 7:45 if you must for the pure solo. I went to see Bladerunner. Tyrells motto was more human than human. Buddy was a replicant.
So funky!
This is amazing. have seen every other BR video and just caught this. This is historic to say the least so hope it stays live. Many great drummers ( I play as well) but I have not seen a solo like this ever. The audience's yells, etc tells you they felt something special happening here. Thanks again!
around the 10:00 minute mark i start getting shivers HOLY.... !anyone who is a musician that believes there ever was a greater drummer than Buddy ...well ... you know what i mean lol
Great 👍
Who else loves the moment at 6:45?
The rim-stick, then the stick-only, rolls, beginning about 14:06 ... Oh yeah!! The pressed roll into single strokes ... Oh my!!!
When he was hot the gods cried.
Glad you enjoyed it. I may have to delete this particular upload but I will keep the solo posted on my page.
I met him 3 times, was in absolute awe countless times. What a gem you have!
:) I would imagine It won't be too long before there are too many comments and shares for me to reply to. lol.
P.S. If you go to my channel and scroll down a little you can see I subscribed to my cousin Charles Fleisher's page. You're not obligated to, just mentioning a coincidence, he was a patient at Kessler in the late 80's due to a spinal chord injury. He was also the 2013 recipient of a "Think First" VIP of the year award, from the Kessler Foundation, Think First, N.J. of West Orange, N.J.
Done. Thanks for mentioning this. We can never do enough. I'm thankful every day for the difference we can make in people's lives. And I always point out they did the work.
BUDDY RICH SPENT HIS TIME ,LISTEN AND MEMORIZE ALL THE CUTS AND FILLS OF THE SONG , THAT IS A BIG ADVANTAGE, AND WORKED OUT WITH HIS LEFT HAND TO GETS BETTER, BUT HE NEVER SPENT TIME TO STUDY MUSIC OR TRYING TO LEARN TO READ MUSIC, AND HIS SOLOS WERE MORE LIKE BOMBASTIC WITH CLIMAX AT THE END, BUT THERE WAS SOMETHING MISSING.AND THAT THING THAT WAS MISSING ONLY MAX ROACH WAS ABLE TO DO IT.
Buddy pulled the Anti-Steve Gadd during the bass solo. lol
PURE TALENT IN A WORLD OF CRAP NOW!!
one thing..I think it's completely idiotic that people come to a vid like THIS and ask for higher resolution..first of all be happy this shit exists at all in the first place..in the second place this rez is just fine man that is one of the main reasons I stopped posting because of bs rquests like that. STOP IT!
Kirk, It's ok with me. It was a learning experience for me. I'm glad you enjoyed it. Happy Holidays.
drummer myself ,hope to get near his accomplishments oneday
+Thomas Homolash
Ha Ha that's funny ! No drummer has ever or will ever got near to Buddy's talent, so good luck with that one mate
Thank you so much! I'm still sad though that The Drum Battle at JATP, and Apples (a.k.a. Gino) are not available in video form. :'(
U are witnessing a God
GENE WHO ?
The only Drummer who even comes close to Buddy's style is Mike Giles (King Crimson/Own bands/session) . Buddy does look like he's just relaxing, I shudder to think if he really broke a sweat, he'd probably levitate his kit&him and fly away !!!
Do you have any information about where / when this great performance was filmed?
Hi Bruno, this was filmed at the Newport jazz Festival in Newport Rhode island, on July 2, 1979. The entire day/night was taped but the video only included a cut or two from each performer. For the two cuts of Buddy to be used, the commentator, Gerry Mulligan, wanted to use the Bari Sax feature and a shortened version of Channel One Suite with the cut to Buddy's solo. I was playing trombone sitting next to Buddy.
Did Buddy take a hit of Mescaline that night ?
Mongo L No! maybe a joint!! He was a pothead FYI!!!!!
He's so intense, mesc may have had no effect...
What drumsticks was he using in this clip
If you have this performance on tape - is it possible to post it in a better quality than 480 dpi?
I don't know where or when this was from. I came across it on an old mixed VHS tape of my father's. The quality doesn't seem to be any different than the vhs tape. I am not sure what 480 dpi is. What would be better?
rbogan9199
dpi means dots per inch. You could transfer it on a computer in HD quality (1.024 dpi). That makes the movie a little better if you watch it fullscreen. There are some free programs on the internet (like AVS Video Converter or others) to convert the clip into a higher picture quality.
Bruno Kassel I'll see what I can do. Right now when I click on settings on this particular youtube video it says it's only at 360 dpi. My day is now ending at 4:22 A.M. I'll try in the afternoon. Thank you.
rbogan9199
Sure it says only 360 dpi, because you have upoaded it in only 360 dpi. You have to convert the clip first on your PC into a higher quality and then upload it.
Bruno Kassel I converted this from VHS to digital, or whatever you call it with the intention of making myself a DVD. So I had set my converter to DVD-standard definition t.v. resolution 720*480 DVD burning. Should I convert it again to-High Definition MPEG-2 (1920*1080) OR to-WMV Highly Compressed: ideal for web {ie. UA-cam) which are the other choices my converter gives me besides Blue Ray SD or HD? Thank You in advance.
If the Devil could play drums, that would have to be him incarnated as the most FEROCIOUS drummer ever to walk to walk earth. That's just not human.
I love Buddy! Most amazing drummer ever.
Sure was.
+david buda Real talk !
he said he hated playing match grip...so whys he playing it here?
Great question. He is only using match grip while doing the 16th notes on the HHs so his attack on them is even. It would be difficult to get the stick in his left hand angled the same way to get the sound he was going after. Hope that helps and you enjoyed the video. .
That certainly did answer my question and yes Buddy is one of my favs thanks for the response!
actually, he switches back to match grip at around 12:00 (albeit briefly). Buddy could play equally well with either grip
He certainly could.... he was the master at traditional grip.
Bob Coassin, lead trumpet?
Weird seeing him using matched grip on the intro
Can anyone tell me who the bass player is? Dave somebody I think.. Pretty sure he played with Holdsworth later and he's passed away now...
Jason Burns the bass player is dave carpenter, who once dated buddy's daughter, lucky guy.
alan cobain Bassist here is Wayne Pedziwiatr. Tom Warrington, bassist with B for 3 years, was the one who dated Cathy.
MarkR1957 I am not familiar with Dave Carpenter, but I do know you are correct about the bass player in this video being Wayne Pedzwater.
ua-cam.com/video/HnX3_AdeA_0/v-deo.html
rbogan9199
Carpenter was with Buddy in 83-84. Wayne was before him, in 79-80. They look physically similar, but have very different playing styles. Thanks.
MarkR1957 You're Welcome, Mark,and thank you.
How the heck is this humanely possible? He makes other greats like Neil Peart, Keith Moon, Danny Carey etc look 'just good'. Only Billy Cobham even comes close.
I tend to agree...I've heard some very able, and famous, drummers play in those Buddy Rich "Tribute" bands and the only one that seemed comfortable and could generate the same energy and excitement as Buddy was Billy Cobham
Roger C
There was a time in my life where all I did was eat, sleep, and drink Billy Cobham. Lucky enough to see him in clinic(with Dom Famularo-no slouch either)
robbopaloobop Steve Smith, too. If you never saw him with Buddy's Buddies, you don't know what you are missing, the energy and excitement are palpable. I've seen both Cobham and Smith about 20 times. BTW, check out Chris Dave. I'm not always crazy about his style, but he's beyond superhuman in terms of chops and he's an innovator. For musicality, brilliance and chops and total independence, see Dave King of The Bad Plus.
Yeah !!! Billy Cobham !!! Especially with Jack bruce !!!
uses matched grip.....-_-
this is almost funny "it doesnt get any better than this!
well, until you see another new vid that somehow will top this one
br man hell never be equaled the word PROLIFIC tends to fit him like a glove.. one thing i do NOT understand though its this..why do these dumb people mostly 20/30 somethings say they are maybe not as great as br but think theyre even close (but they honestly are light years behind i dont care if your drum ometer speed says you're faster, i mean that i think can be true but all around musicality showmanship finesse. Guys (esp that silly ass whiplash kid who keeps getting us to think he's in buddys back pocket..i got news, that kid is not even musical, i have child students who say more than that kid at half the speed no matter how fast he plays folks? technique is a "MEANS TO AN END" yes you NEED chops to pull off some of brs things but without the musicality thing or swing those wannabes no matter how well meaning they may be? just make absolute fools of themselves continually placing their name next to buddys..its getting annoying to tell you the truth i mean isnt it? any one who has big enough ears can hear all of the musical notes pouring out of buddy most times fast but he can do it at any tempo shit he can do it w one stick..yet these foolish little kids ask dumb questions like is "buddy rich the goat" I guess were all supposed to answer..well, he WAS but now you are?" lol sorry but no. id like to tell that knat to piss off and start playing musically then maybe he can call himself a drummer never mind if buddy is goat or not i personally think he is well anyway rant over..im just surprised at the number of seemingly musically deaf the people who say hes in ANY way close to buddy..its just not the case! remember butch miles? heres his formula.... touch time swing finesse then the musical 3d approach which that kid seems to have no clue wtf THAT even is im not going to explain it here too long already.. ill just sum it up for now unless asked..one word.......NOPE!
Love the drumming. hate the audience! What's with all the hollering and screaming during the solo? Just listen, and watch the Master at work.
Amazing, DD
DOUBLE AND TRIPLESE!!!!!!!!!!+++++!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!. !!!!.!!!!!!!HE IS MY BRUCE LEE, MY GOD!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!+!+++?!?!+!+??+!?!!?
I think I may wind up taking this down because of c o p y r i t e. I am putting up just the solo, so enjoy the full arrangement while you can.
NOBODY.
Very fast. Very technically correct. But no feeling. You want feeling? Listen to Krupa.
+StvMcQueen1 I disagree, but I'm not looking for an argument. If you're not feeling it you're not feeling. Gene always always played with feeling.. Buddy showed more feeling as he got older. Just because he's playing fast doesn't mean he's not playing with feeling. Again, You're entitled to your opinion. :)
+rbogan9199 I'm not looking for an argument either. Fast has nothing to do with it. The best way I can explain it is, both Glen Miller's and Lawrence Welk's bands could play "In The Mood." But which played it with more "feeling?" Get my drift? In this analogy, Buddy Rich would be Lawrence Welk. That's my story and I'm sticking to it.
I get your drift, I just have a different opinion.
+rbogan9199 You know, after thinking about it, I think I know the reason I'm so negative on Buddy Rich. He has the personality of a rock. By contrast, Krupa was always smiling and mixing it up with the guys in the band. I'd bet the bank that being a musician in Rich's band would not have been a pleasant experience. He seems like the kind of guy who would be a high-strung horse's ass (not unlike Billy Joel).. And with that, I'll shut up.
Sure he cou;d be a real asshead, but I wouldn't say he had the personality of a rock, He had a huge personality and a huge ego, but Johnny Carson loved to interview Buddy because he was quick witted and he enjoyed the back and forth banter.
ANYONE WHO STILL THINK PEART IS BETTER AFTER WATCHING THIS, IS CLINICLEY BLIND AND BETTER APPLY FOR A WHITE CANE AND A SEEING EYE DOG VERY QUICKL BEFORE THEY SERIOUSLY INJURE THEMSELVES.
alan cobain Neil who!!!! You got to be fucking kidding me!!!!
alan cobain - Different styles and musical sensibilities. Peart isn’t on same level with jazz; Rich wouldn’t be on prog rock. Stewart Copeland is a great example. Phenomenal work with The Police no one can touch. Even, Rich, who undoubtedly is as skilled as they come, wouldn’t have the feel Copland brings to a Police song.
where were Copeland, or Palmer at the Buddy Rich memorial? Collins and Bruford made the effort. Good for them.
Dennis McEvoy What a load of shit. "Oh, we can't compare, because they're different!" Justin Bieber and Mozart? Who's the best? None, of course! They are different after all! LOL. Excellent reasoning there.
Stop comparing Peart and Rich.
Neil Peart had the utmost respect for Buddy Rich.
Check out his "Burning for Buddy" recordings.
Neil was very good friends with Buddy's daughter Cathy, and in fact, she herself chose Neil Peart to head the Burning for Buddy recordings and concerts, stating that Neil was the 1st drummer she thought of to do it.
In the Big band there is nobody like him.
But if you put him in a dual, or trio band, he would no play well. He is not made to play slow. He needs 200 BPM metronome speed.
I've seen him 7 times & he plays slow songs perfectly.
