@@Chinchilla2310 There's also claim the mojave for a more recent one. I don't think you can rebuild rail lines but at least you can build new stuff in places you clear out.
Great video! I'm still baffled how much attention to detail went into a game developed in 18 months, like it would be fair and excusable if the railroad didn't make sense, but it would be absolutely practical after being restored (tho I wouldn't recommend making a hole through the walls of Vegas lol)
So, I noticed during one of the shots of the side of the locomotives that they read "Barstow Express AT&SF". The AT&SF, the Atchison, Topeka and Santa Fe (most well-known as just the "Santa Fe"), was a real railroad company. But strangely enough... They didn't have tracks to Vegas. The closest they ever got appears to be off the bottom of the NV map. Although, while I am unable to confirm whether it was an AT&SF subsidiary, there was a company that branched from their lines through Ivanpah and nearly to Primm. The real company that goes through Vegas is the Union Pacific, who are also the origin of that shield design on top of the station in Freeside at 15:36, although that may be down to nvRanger's mod, I'd need someone to confirm. The Union Pacific got control of the Los Angeles and Salt Lake Railroad, who had originally built the line through Vegas. The LA&SL met the AT&SF off the bottom of the map, however, at a junction in Daggett, appropriately enough, near Barstow, bringing us in somewhat of a chaotic information loop back to the name on the engines (which appear to be EMD E-Units, either E7, E8, or E9s, probably E8s for both statistical and AT&SF historical reasons) in game. Thanks for reading that wall of text, to those that do.
The station in frreeside does get its design from the Tale of Two Wastelands mod. You can access Fallout 3 by taking the train inside the station. Perhaps the devs of that mod are familiar with the rail lines of the area. Great information, someone else mentioned some similar info (not exactly the same). I find it really cool, but I don't know much at all about it. Perhaps the NCR is resonsible for bringing those locomotives into the region. I should mention that I do not believe the one at calville bay has the Barstow branding in vanilla. It may in a shot or two of mine due to a retexture mod (my fault).
This would be a great layout plan for any current or future model railroaders. The buildings, terrain and track plan could easily be replicated. The roll of the railroad would be just as you said would, restoring freight and passenger service to the area, with security forces on board to clear out death claws and other undesirables. Bill of ladings (assembling the train with the correct rolling stock) would be randomly drawn from cards, with delivery locations on a timetable. Random encounter cards could be drawn at certain locations with locals and enemies. A roll of some dice would indicate success or failure with the reward or consequence. Enjoyed the video, thanks.
Awesome, I would love to see a model railroad recreation of New Vegas. Might even get into the hobby one day and try and do it myself. That'll be a long time from now though so hopefully someone beats me to it
It's funny, just the other day I was playing New Vegas and I too was mapping the railroad. My friend walked in and asked what I was up to and I just responded: "I want to know where it ALL goes."
I've had this headcanon for a while that the second railway tunnel you mentioned (the one that leads to nipton) could potentially connect to Big MT. Big wall of pure mountain leading south, Big MT's train tunnel heading north through an equally large wall, and so on. If the Divide was a major roadblock to the north, it'd make sense for the Big Empty to be an equally large roadblock to the south... that, and the crashed satellite is very close to that train tunnel.
This is the content I need. I recently found Any Austin and it's similar content, just "boring" explanations for minor stuff in great video games. Inject it right into my veins.
Another banger video! Love this style of video and the premise Additionally those opening shots were excellent. Music added great atmosphere. Really set the mood
One cool thing I’ve noticed is the locomotives have AT&SF marked on the roundel at 3:57 - Also known as the Santa Fe railroad. Irl ATSF Merged with the Burlington Northern to form the BNSF, so ig we can infer that in fallout that merger never happened
@ quite a bit before New Vegas! iirc the merger happened in 1995. Also of note, The Union Pacific mainly operates the track in Vegas, and the BNSF runs along I-40 into Barstow irl. Not unheard of to see a BNSF loco in Vegas tho, but it is rare.
Very cool, thanks. Someone else just mentioned the Union Pacific and it seems the TTW mod used something approximating their logo for the station in Freeside. I love the detail and context that you guys can add to this given your knowledge on the subject.
Great video very in depth. On one of my many playthroughs I was legit curious to see where the tracks go. I remember that I would follow tracks to be met by a dead end and always wonder what's beyond that. Crazy to see that attention to detail.

The map construction details are great that you've put together, and the ghoul humor at around 10:25 is just perfect fallout cheek. Fantastic work here 👍
I would imagine that it has to do with different designers working on different areas and trying to keep things a bit streamlined in a cluttered section of the map. I also imagine that they try and give unique identity to each neighborhood with the quests involved in them. It would be hard as players to distinguish them if we were just going all over the place for the relevant quests. Its a good question though, one only the devs could answer.
@@joshanderson9391 that's exactly why Freeside is split up into 2 (technically 3 if you count the Old Morman Fort, which I do) areas. Triangle City has a nice breakdown on the development of New Vegas, if you haven't heard of him, I highly recommend giving it a watch when you're not too busy
This makes me want a quest to clear the tracks and get a functioning train to take you across the Mojave btw I used this mod www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/83902 by Spifferino for the base map I built upon!
The way I’d do this would be to make the quest givers The Followers. Maybe the group in the railway tower is there to find a full map of the rail lines of Nevada. The introduction quest is to go and find the rail map, maybe in one of the rail stations. Once you give them the map they then task the player with working with clearing teams. The motive for The Followers could be to establish a trade relationship with the Boomers, once done the rail line is then operational and you can take a train from the Boomers in the north to the tower in the centre(ish) then down to near the Mojave Outpost. Then throw in a few side quests about clearing other disruptions to open more stops and help maintain the railway. And a couple of scavenging quests to find parts! That’s how I would structure the quest line anyway.
The only difficult part would be the animations to be honest, it wouldnt be too difficult to get everything else in. Even more so if you skip the animations and make it essentially fast travel points
@UlyssesCrab the scavanging quests could be one of those repeatable ones where you earn little bits of xp and money or maybe discounts on travel fees, something too make use of unused scrap items in the game.
10:26 My thinking has always been that these crossings with no visible signage or markings and where the gravel of the railbed goes over the road were NCR repairs to the railroad. Just a thought anyways
Very Interesting Video. Thank you. FO NV was my favorite of the series, primarily because I was born and raised in the Mojave Desert, thus aliened myself with it on a real and fictional level.

Great video! There's an old quest mod called New Vegas Railroads that touches on this part of the NCR.. Maybe It's time for some modders to revive NV trains!
Thanks! I saw that when looking for some mods to support the video. I'm afraid to put it in my load order and break my game so I'd definitely love an updated iteration
I imagine the freight car wall was originally on the rails and the way the fiends, or someone else before them, manage it was to tip them over using a lever and fulcrum, which can output immense force with little input. however, what I can't explain is how they managed to stack two lines of freight cars on top of each other
While Repconn does have a guided tour, I think a lot of the employees might also be using the train station. The Rock Crushing plant might have originally be used for crushing limestone to be used at a concrete plant, or for crushing other stones into gravel, possibly for cement (mix of concrete, sand, and gravel) or train track ballast. Or for crushing ore-bearing stone to be used at the steel plant. In any case it seems like a useful place given that it's near a trainline with such things. Just something to keep in mind if you do get into office for the NCR. As for the train wall, I guess I shouldn't underestimate the capabilities of a large quantity of weirdoes tripping on hallucinogens, stimulants, and synthetic steroids.
Good point about employees who might be using public transit as locals. I hope I don't get into office for NCR, I think being a UA-camr would be more fun😅
Is it Hyce? Is the mystery employer Hyce? _Is it the Talyllyn Railway_ ? Pretty neat video! I'm surprised I never went following tracks when I was playing XD
12:40 Random thing, but I think the rock crusher plant is important because you need sand and gravel of specific roughness (not desert sand) to produce concrete together with cement (which requires limestone).

@@nvRanger. I do wish the NCR would have used something closer to steam locomotives, though, rather than what appear to be EMD diesel units; They're far more versatile (Being that, as long as you can get something to continuously boil the water, you're all good) and they'd also fit the NCR's WW1-esque vibe in New Vegas exceptionally well. (That and also fitting California's own history; Plus, who doesn't love a classic steam engine?)
That's a great idea, I don't . I'm no artist, not even a particularly good map maker, but perhaps down the line I'll try and compile everything in a data base of some sort.
It just goes to show just how important the rest of the infrastructure of New Vegas was to the NCR, not just the Hoover Dam. Hell, the entire reason the Powder Gangers are as prominent as they are is because the NCR had to rely on the inmates to rebuild tracks, with their attention split between policing the Strip, protecting caravans and fighting the Legion, I'd be surprised if the Powder Gangers weren't successful in their riot/revolt. Had the Legion not have become as big of a threat as soon as they did the NCR could've probably rebuilt Vegas. It's possible that their previous victory against the Mojave Brotherhood got to their collective heads and forgot just how spread thin they actually are. As it turns out, train infrastructure can be used as a narrative device. First video of yours that I've watched and enjoyed it. I think I'll check out some more vids. :)
Awesome thank you. Yea its interesting to consider what the NCR could do with Vegas without the Legion getting involved. They were cleaning up the Mojave and whats left of the BoS. From what the game seems to indicate, this is the end of that easy expansion period. The Legion is poised to win the second battle and I don't know how much of that infrastructure they will put to use.
I love a video that digs into the lesser seen parts of video games that developers put work into. The channel AnyAustin has done a few similar videos related to fallout games
I'm filing this in my reasons why I can make an Independent New Vegas thrive. We get the railroads working, plenty of jobs, trade, food and water, building material, and safe supply lines.
Rest of the video aside, that opening. A little more narrative and less random and that would be a solid NV tribute. It's got the light melancholy with just a touch of brewing evil.
The comments around the area of new vegas is interesting because games rarely make settings where its actually a world thats a shadow of its former self, when that was quite a common experience in post roman history and elsewhere in world history. The city of Rome had 1 million people in 100 AD, then only 50,000 for large parts of the middle ages. Living in new Vegas, looking on the trains and old buildings, probably feels a lot like a Roman walking through the overgrown coliseum.

I hope we'll someday finally be able to see trains (or any terrain vehicle for that matter) in action in a fallout title (^_^)
Thanks!, I'll have to look into 4's train situation. Work love to do a similar video for that game. Definitely agreed, train travel through Fallout (or metro) would be particularly fun
@@nvRanger. 4's railroad tracks don't have as many junctions from what I remember and most of the associated locations like Oberland Station aren't particularly useful, though there are, naturally, some exceptions. (There's also ZERO indication that the railroads in that game have ever been rebuilt or restored to operation, which makes sense for both 4 and 76 as there's probably not a lot of people left who even know how to operate a train, let alone maintain the tracks.)
I never noticed the UP shield on top of the Vegas depot. 😅 Union Pacific and Boston and Maine are Fallout cannon. Btw it’s just a locomotive. Cars are what the locomotive pulls. 😊
Yea are conductor earlier in the comments corrected me on the locomotive thing, thanks. The UP shield I believe is only there because of the tale of two wastelands mod. Not there in vanilla unfortunately
I would have split minor and major disruptions. Lot of the minor ones could be cleared in a day or so (week max) without heavy equipment, where as the major ones would be a much more expensive and time consuming to clear.
But what about the rails near NoVac? :) But I only remembered them from the Otters video and they also dont make alot of sense. The railsystem seems to be very functional, Fallout just has a habit of making them steep as rollercoasters in places :)
I think the steepness has to do with the scaled down map. What is a gradual decline become a steep one when condensed. I forgot the Novac rail line tbh. Couple others have mentioned the same. Not sure it’s relevant to the main anyway. Seems to be a product of cut content.

@@Chinchilla2310 There's also claim the mojave for a more recent one. I don't think you can rebuild rail lines but at least you can build new stuff in places you clear out.
Have you played claim the mojave? Sounds very cool, I have had it installed, but never actually got around to engaging with it
Interesting idea for a video. Would be cool to see one on 3, 4, and 76’s trains
Definitely on list 👍
Great video! I'm still baffled how much attention to detail went into a game developed in 18 months, like it would be fair and excusable if the railroad didn't make sense, but it would be absolutely practical after being restored (tho I wouldn't recommend making a hole through the walls of Vegas lol)
Thanks! Yea I was amazed to see how it passes industrial work sites as well. Something I hadn't noticed in years of playing.
You could probably make a gatehouse
You deserve alot more subs for vids like these keep up the good work! 👍
appreciated, I will 🫡
The algorithm reached me and knew I needed more New Vegas content. Love the internal lore man. I can’t wait to see you go from 13k subs to 200k subs.
That would be pretty neat. Thank you and thank the algorithm!
You’re ahead of the game then.
I like that theory but I thought Big MT was closer to the divide. I definitely could just be assuming that, not sure where that idea comes from.
This is the content I need. I recently found Any Austin and it's similar content, just "boring" explanations for minor stuff in great video games. Inject it right into my veins.
Awesome, I enjoy his stuff as well. Probably the only gaming related videos I still make time for. It’s a fun niche

Thanks a lot, appreciate the kind words and feedback!
One cool thing I’ve noticed is the locomotives have AT&SF marked on the roundel at 3:57 - Also known as the Santa Fe railroad. Irl ATSF Merged with the Burlington Northern to form the BNSF, so ig we can infer that in fallout that merger never happened
Interesting. Do you know when the merger happened? Was it post New Vegas or long before. Definitely could be an aspect of the alternate timeline
Thanks! Dangerous trail to follow as well. Definitely could of half-assed it and many people wouldn't have noticed, but they went the extra mile.
@nvRanger exactly and that's what I appreciate about the devs.
Thanks for getting me into TTW again, listening to yours and triangle city videos in the background. Would be nice to see some more FO3 areas covered.
working on a Fallout 3 video now

What about the "orphan" railway? The one that goes from (more-or-less) Helios to end at that tunnel entrance near Dead Wind Cavern?
Couple people have mentioned it. I completely missed it. Tsk tsk
I find it crazy how much new vegas youtube content there is ❤
I love it, saw MutantMods uploaded minutes after me. We gotta keep the community around this game alive.
@nvRanger the core fanbase is always out looking for more new vegas

Less than 1 minute in, and I'm already in love with your editing. This is fabulous, great job!!
And a little over 20 mins later and I agree with my initial thoughts, the editing is so good. The map construction details are great that you've put together, and the ghoul humor at around 10:25 is just perfect fallout cheek. Fantastic work here 👍
Thanks 🙏 kind works really go a long way. That ghoul had it coming
One question I want asked is why dosent freeside/north or west have any connection to each directly and almost no crossover quests?
I would imagine that it has to do with different designers working on different areas and trying to keep things a bit streamlined in a cluttered section of the map.
I also imagine that they try and give unique identity to each neighborhood with the quests involved in them. It would be hard as players to distinguish them if we were just going all over the place for the relevant quests. Its a good question though, one only the devs could answer.
Might also be due to console memory issues. That’s why the Strip is split into 3 seperate parts so maybe that also occurred in Freeside
This makes me want a quest to clear the tracks and get a functioning train to take you across the Mojave
btw I used this mod www.nexusmods.com/newvegas/mods/83902 by Spifferino for the base map I built upon!
Needs to be a mod
I know, right? A mod that adds functioning trains would be gold!
Amazing that Osidian craeted this dense and detailed world in such a short time, and we still find details in or worry about so many years later :)
very true, I'm regularly amazed and surprised at how many new things I find each year since 2010
10:26 My thinking has always been that these crossings with no visible signage or markings and where the gravel of the railbed goes over the road were NCR repairs to the railroad. Just a thought anyways
I like that theory, definitely could be
Very Interesting Video. Thank you. FO NV was my favorite of the series, primarily because I was born and raised in the Mojave Desert, thus aliened myself with it on a real and fictional level.

That intro will live in my dreams. Your videos are incredibly high quality. Incredibly comforting. Perfect to fall asleep to. Keep grinding king.
Love to hear it, I will no doubt 🫡 thank you!
@@nvRanger Just for that, I'm voting for you anyway.
I’ll take it. My platform is “Trains”

Is it Hyce? Is the mystery employer Hyce?
_Is it the Talyllyn Railway_ ?
Pretty neat video! I'm surprised I never went following tracks when I was playing XD
😅idk who Hyce is tbh
@ I think if you look up K37 Kitchen you can find out pretty quickly :P But it was him or Train of Thought who came to mind first XD
12:40 Random thing, but I think the rock crusher plant is important because you need sand and gravel of specific roughness (not desert sand) to produce concrete together with cement (which requires limestone).
Interesting, I’m not sure it was included in the NCR’s operations before but based on that, it would be going forward.
Can I just say this is exactly the sort of work that would get a special bonus from Mr. House? Given the initial premise.
that's what I like to hear

Imagine the people of the Vegas region seeing the NCR pull up for the first time in a full LOCOMOTIVE.
For real. They could tell something big changes were coming. Fun to think about
Do you ever post your maps? I love daydreaming about building up fantasy locations and having the map would be really cool for that!
That's a great idea, I don't . I'm no artist, not even a particularly good map maker, but perhaps down the line I'll try and compile everything in a data base of some sort.
@@nvRanger that would be awesome!
What an awesome intro! I love this game man
Thanks dude! Lookin forward to add some more NCR territory to my game
That intro was beautiful
Thank you
It just goes to show just how important the rest of the infrastructure of New Vegas was to the NCR, not just the Hoover Dam.
AnyAustin is awesome, love his stuff. Very interesting niche, I’m glad others enjoy it.
I'm filing this in my reasons why I can make an Independent New Vegas thrive. We get the railroads working, plenty of jobs, trade, food and water, building material, and safe supply lines.
Yea it helps the case for such. Lotta work to do, but not impossible.
I added the 1000th like :) Great video!
Satisfying, thank you very much
No way one of the first things I learn about Fallout from this channel regarding the original games is that the Hub is an actual location???
Yes, its placement is a bit off due to how they organized the locations in game, but it is meant to be Barstow via the Official Survival Guide
Rest of the video aside, that opening. A little more narrative and less random and that would be a solid NV tribute. It's got the light melancholy with just a touch of brewing evil.
fair enough 👍

The comments around the area of new vegas is interesting because games rarely make settings where its actually a world thats a shadow of its former self, when that was quite a common experience in post roman history and elsewhere in world history. The city of Rome had 1 million people in 100 AD, then only 50,000 for large parts of the middle ages. Living in new Vegas, looking on the trains and old buildings, probably feels a lot like a Roman walking through the overgrown coliseum.
Great parallel, I haven’t considered that angle before.
Big AnyAustin energy. Big ups.
Big appreciation. Big comparison.
U forgot one train track 😢 the one that leeds from ranger station charlie towards the back of gibson scrap yard toward helios one
But the important part where does the tunnel leed to on that specific train track bc its a fresh track they ar building it it looks like

13:28 the fiends ripped their entire stash of psycho in one go to muster the strength to move the train cars 😂
thats a solid theory, psycho and buffout mix to get that hulk strength.
Love the music at the beginning of the video man I love FNV wish they would remaster or remake it on newer hardware
thanks! completely agreed, we need a proper remake
Btw this video reminded me of the cartography series of radking but for NV (i know he did some for NV but ngl those are just sum of thr game's main quest and some side quests instead of actually looking at the map and analizing the enviromental lore)
I haven't seen those but I'm sure they'd be up my ally. The devs put in so much work to create an authentic Vegas region.
Subbed for the intro ❤
thank you, glad you liked it
My theory I’ve always had was the rock rubble laying around the tracks to the south and the just past the I-15 crossing was powder ganger sabotage.
Definitely a sensible theory. They’re all over the area and we know they go from Sloan to Nipton. Might walk the rail line for travel
Wanted to give a shout out to you nvRanger! Excellent video, so informative and really professional. My video isn’t nearly as polished. Hope to not steal any of your thunder, you deserve it. Cheers to all of those making New Vegas content 🍻 🦦
Ayyy my man, enough room for the both of us, no doubt. Appreciate the kind words. Onwards and upwards to both of us!
Might need to commision your army of otters to get this rail line back up and running.
Awesome video I love the railroads of fallout! I was fascinated reading about fallout 4's trains, and how they had functioning freight lines just before the events of the game!
It's going to be interesting to see how Fallout Season 2 is going to treat the area around NV.
It's gonna be wild in either direction. Good or bad, I imagine I'll be saying "holy shit"
Fair enough
Always wished someone would make a mod that brought back the trains and even let the npc travel from location to location
Would love something like that
You should collab with AnyAustin
Now this is content
🙏
And Barstow is the hub I believe right? So that first railroad line goes to the hub?
Yea I put a note in right around that point saying Barstow is The Hub. Very cool little detail connecting New Vegas to the original Fallout
I love the opening music
Good stuff, link in the description if you’re interested
But what about the rails near NoVac? :) But I only remembered them from the Otters video and they also dont make alot of sense.
The railsystem seems to be very functional, Fallout just has a habit of making them steep as rollercoasters in places :)
I think the steepness has to do with the scaled down map. What is a gradual decline become a steep one when condensed.
I forgot the Novac rail line tbh. Couple others have mentioned the same. Not sure it’s relevant to the main anyway. Seems to be a product of cut content.
the amount of views that these new vegas videos get in such a short span youd think that bethesda would try to revive it
Maybe if we keep at it that will be the result
It'd be up to Obsidian, really; Bethesda's main involvement would have been through their publishing branch: Bethesda Softworks.
I think it’d be up to Microsoft at this point
@@nvRanger. In part, yes; However, they tend to be pretty hands off for better or worse so either Bethesda would do such a project or a smaller team within Obsidian. (Who are currently busy with Avowed and Outer Worlds 2.)
Aw man, we are missing the DLC railroads!
Will have to be a different video. I know Old World Blues has some. I don't think Dead Money or Zion does, and I honestly can't recall if Lonesome Road has any
@nvRanger yeah, just OWB so it would have fitted here hahaha, still, that's for the future :)

I wonder what a fully realized map like a fully working new Vegas map a day before the nukes dropped would look like? Have modders done that already?

12:15 this rock crushing plant is one of my favorite places with nothing going on in it
That whole southwest corner just outside of the more urban area of Vegas is cool. Very little reason to go there in game other than to explore and try and make sense of a lost world.
