What is ITP?
ITP is a blood disorder where your body attacks and destroys its own blood platelets, which are responsible for clotting the blood. It is considered an autoimmune disorder because the immune system mistakenly sees the platelets as foreign and destroys them. This leads to a decrease in the number of platelets in the blood, making it difficult for the blood to clot properly.
Immune System Abnormalities:
One of the possible causes of ITP lies in the body's immune system. In people with ITP, there is a specific type of immune cell called T cells, which produce antibodies that target and destroy platelets. This attack causes the body to have a low platelet count and can lead to ITP.
Symptoms of ITP:
The primary symptom of ITP is bleeding under the skin, which leads to a purple or red rash known as purpura. This rash can appear on the arms, legs, and face, and it may also be present in the mouth and other mucous membranes. Other symptoms include prolonged bleeding from cuts or injuries, frequent nosebleeds, and bleeding gums.
People with ITP may also experience fatigue, weakness, and dizziness due to the decrease in platelets, which are important in forming blood clots. In severe cases, internal bleeding may occur, which can cause abdominal pain, blood in the urine or stool, and headaches.

ITP is often a diagnosis of exclusion, meaning that other conditions with similar symptoms must be ruled out first.
