@Rob Oh yeah thousands of us do, she was the best, just wish all of us could have helped her but it's such a terrible disease and even tough to beat today, but we have her music.
This song was written by my good friend Steve Eaton, a very talented musician and performer. I just love this song and how well the Carpenters mixed it and performed it.
He did a nice job on this song. Always one of my favorites. Perfect for the Carpenters and Karen was her usual outstanding on the vocals!! It should have done better on the charts!! What do people know what's good, then and now!
Super arrangement and of course, superb Karen vocals. Steve wrote a very catchy tune which is probably more appreciated now than originally released. I love the tempo. Upbeat but so smooth! Did Steve write other songs for the Carpenters or was this it?

By far the best of their late career singles - Steve Eaton composition, Richard Carpenter arrangement but man oh man nothing beats those Karen Carpenter vocals !
I agree. I watched and had the following observations. 1. Rhythm Section is huge and heavy especially from the beginning. Love the wood block. Gives it a lot of sparkle. 2.Is it me or were there a ton of instruments in general. Like I heard a bunch of brass as well. 3. So is the sax solo just a Carpenters thing? I feel like I'm seeing a trend of sax playing here. 4. Were those string instruments? I don't know I just want to verify to make sure I'm not hearing things here.
@@lourson55 Yes she did; she told her brother in 1981 that she realizes she is sick and needs help. She ate a big dinner her last evening, trying to help herself. The problem was she put on weight too fast for her weakened heart.
@@bobdavis4848her heart was also damaged from abuse of ipecac syrup, which is cardiotoxic when taken long term. She also abused thyroid medications to achieve weight loss
She was 27 when this was originally released in May 1977, reaching #35 on the Billboard Hot 100. Her contralto voice (pitch) was rare for female singers, but it gave her lower-register, and stunning 3-octave range an extraordinary emotional pull that I've never heard from any other woman! She also was considered one of the finest drummers in history. But it was her incredible voice that captivated everyone who heard it, and she will always be remembered as one of the greatest singers in both her soft rock (and ballad) genre, as Patsy Cline is in the country genre. Karen was only 32 (Feb. 4, 1983), while Patsy was only 30 (Mar. 5, 1963), almost exactly 20 years apart in their sad passing. This song has always been one of my favorites of hers, and one of her final ones with her health issues becoming an issue in recording more that we should have had from her. "Although tomorrow I know the Sun is risin', lightin' up the world for everyone--but not for me!" --Karen's lyrics at 1:28
Gosh, every time I see this video, I can't help admiring how totally, unbearably gorgeous she is in every possible way, including her voice, song delivery, bodily movement, facial expressions -- and especially the way she looks. Here in this video she is the most beautiful woman in the whole world.
To me, this song symbolizes the year (c1977) the Carpenters were hard-up for another Hit. It'd been 2 years at that point, they hadn't had any. I believe it was due to the Industry changing, as well as my young age. I was in my teens then & as the Carpenters slowly slid out of the limelight, along came Boston, Foreigner, Meatloaf, Paul Davis, England Dan & John Ford Coley, etc, etc with VERY strong Hits. They won me over during the late 70's.
Such a beautiful voice. What an amazing story. Her brother arranged the music and played the piano. She played the drums. One of my all time favorite groups. So sad I never got to see her perform.

I was always surprised by her spirit to sing those beautiful songs, especially the way she managed her voice, as if it were the coming and going of the waves of the sea, carrying the low and high tones in an excellent way. Karen was, is and will be; an incredible human being who gave herself completely to the people around her. And today, those of us who lived through that precious era, will always remember her for being a soul that had her own voice to speak for herself, and who only wanted to touch the hearts of those who listened to her to tell them what she felt inside ❤️🌈🌬🥰

I have everything they ever recorded and released & cried when she passed away, like she was family. I'm so grateful for all the great music they made and for Herb Alpert brilliance, signing them to a record deal, letting them stay unique.
Real natural singer. The Carpenters did heaps of ballads but also upbeat songs like this. Her voice had lovely vibrato and bell like quality and Richard was a top arranger. Their tunes so catchy. This one she uses both high and low range in her voice. They are my favorite musicians
She looks so pretty here. Also I wish pop music was this good nowadays. Most pop music nowadays is GARBAGE!!!! We miss you Karen and your magical voice. :(

Karen needed to go to a residential treatment facility for a long period of time. Richard and other friends told her so, but she wouldn't listen. And when she went for her 11 months of out-patient treatment in NYC, she wasn't committed to the program. In short, Karen resisted proper treatment. I wish the law would have permitted the family to have her committed to an in-patient facility. I know that's very harsh, but I'm afraid its the only thing that might have worked.
I listen to and play music from many genres. I dislike saying as song is "best ever" - forever is big and genres are so broad. BUT occasionally, you hear a song and simply say, "this song is perfect. THIS SONG IS PERFECT - from writing, through composition, balance, and talent. Karen and RIchard Carpenter somehow drew the heavens to them. Thank your for sharing the beauty you knew with.
This one has always felt to me like the upbeat mirror of "I Need To Be In Love." The singer finally found love but lost it, and it left a bad taste in her mouth! In particular, that song has: "I'm wide awake at 4AM without a friend in sight," and this one has: "It's got you laying up nights just waiting for the music to start!" Excellent song, and it deserved a higher placement than #49 on the U.S. charts!

Karen needed to go to a residential treatment facility for a long period of time. Richard and other friends told her so, but she wouldn't listen. And when she went for her 11 months of out-patient treatment in NYC, she wasn't committed to the program. In short, Karen resisted proper treatment.
