These days I just set up an FTP server and connect to it from the Windows 98 machine. But it's nice to see that there are ways to get Windows filesharing to work.
Considering, it is sometimes quite tricky to get modern Windows computers share files with modern OSes, this is a nice achievement. Good to know, there is this unofficial SP3 package for '98.
When having to deal with old hardware, I usually do filesharing via FTP. Is there any particular reason you do prefer the regular Windows filesharing over FTP?
Right he doesnt even have to leave dos just grab the packet driver for the network card load the com file into 0x60 and bootup ftpsrv which comes with mtcp
I use mtcp setup on a DOS boot floppy disk so i can boot right up and start a ftp server on my 386 and 486 systems then just connect to them to access the hardrive from filezilla on my modern windows 10 pc
This video helps a lot. and I definitely mean A LOT. I have a Toshiba 660CDT running Win98 SE w/USP3 and it's been hell moving files to and from my Ultra 10 acting as a webserver to move files to it while I have the biggo Xircom Eth card in the machine. This will save me a lot of headaches, and prevent me from having to make a lot of CDs for things I wish to install like games. Thanks a bunch for the tutorial!
This is a problem with various older pieces of machinery and test equipment, they work fine but can't communicate on the modern network. Industrially the trend has been to use a small form factor (like micro itx) to act as bridge. Then you can get communication without lowering network security. For home usage that might be an extreme way to go though.
With the unofficial service pack 3 upgrade for Windows 98, does it allow you to install newer drivers for newer chipsets? I have an AMD S3 chip set on a Compaq presario that I use for cutting vinyl and plotting out blueprints, though the vinyl cutter software I can only run on Windows 98. Windows 98 is not the default operating system for this machine, so it only runs in 640x480 with 16 colors. (This is after a software crash which corrupted the hard disk and forced a complete reinstall.) Since I'm unfamiliar with what the service pack does, would it be possible for new or chipset drivers to be usable?
No. The service pack update will not allow you to install drivers intended for different chipsets from your own, or for different versions of windows. You will have to source the appropriate chipset & onboard video/AGP drivers directly from the manufacturers website, or from an alternative mirror. If the drivers you're trying to install aren't working, you may need to try different drivers for your chipset/onboard AGP video card.
This is an interesting way to solve the issue. I do it a different way - I just enable guest account for network logon on a modern Windows (7/8/10) machine and create a shared folder for read/write by guest. Such solution doesn't require any special patches on old machines (Windows 95/98/NT3.5+) which was my hard requirement (I have multiple old machines with different versions of Windows). Btw I see the Dolch keyboard and it looks exactly the same as the one used on IBM ThinkPads. These keyboards tend to have harder and harder key press after years... is this a problem here too?
I don't know if the same thing happens under Win7 but under Win2k (and I think XP) if you have a password longer than 14 characters it will disable LM passwords and you won't be able to login from Win98.
Wouldn't it have been easier to setup a WebDAV or FTP server? Both those protocols are supported by Windows 98. Also note both can be added as "Network places" which are integrated in Windows Explore.
If you change the NTFS security to "everyone read" or "everyone full control" on your shares (rather: the directories/files behind the shares), you should be able to access them without having to enter any passwords or anything... Then again it's been a while since I last did that, so.... ;-)
Kinda funny how it's way more work to make old Windows talk to new Windows than it was to make Win98 talk to (modern) Debian IIRC all I had to do was enable some legacy logon in the Samba config, and I can browse through directories too, not sure what that's about I tried doing this originally but as you said there's not really any info about it (until now!)
I know it's a old video just you can enable smb 1.0 in modern windows , my windows 10 can talk with windows 98 and 3.1 natively without any update , just need to enable a windows function in control panel - programs and features - enable disable windows feature , you will find "smb 1.0/CIFS file shairng support" , now you can choose 3 option , complet remove smb 1.0 client smb 1.0 server smb 1.0 work perfectly with my mahcine between windows 10 and windows 3.11
@@CuriousMarc Can confirm - it was relatively simple to set up internet connection & file sharing by enabling SMB 1.0 & following other more basic guides online. People online will recommend against this as it is exploitable as a security vulnerability through windows 10, but for hobby/personal use I can't imagine it being a huge issue.
I was actually in the process of doing something very similar (with a Win98SE guest inside VMWare and a Samba fileserver instead of Win7) just a couple of days ago: the SP3 patch is great!
It looks like network browsing is turned off on the Win98 system. even though it's not an officially supported configuration, it shouldn't be preventing you from browsing shares. also, map them drives!!
it really scares me to watch those windowses installed; at time of win xp I needed to re install it so many times I remember 25digit license code by now. it was due to sound blaster driver doing shady biz with os. msvcrt32.dll is missing I sat once a week and only thing left was reinstall. it really brought me dark ages of my life this microsoft inventions
Thank you so much for this, I could not get the stupid FTP working and this worked great! Win 10 (in win10 you need to install SMBv1 because it is removed from win 10)
It seems there is a slightly newer version of your win98 service pack 3 unofficial updates. Unofficial Windows 98 Second Edition Service Pack 3.63 www.majorgeeks.com/files/details/unofficial_windows98_se_service_pack.html
It's quite a pain having to move the stuff on that machine with floppies and things like that. This is really worth it if you use the win98 machine a lot.
Not going to say anything about the serial at 2:56 this time, don't want to generate extra work for our hero. However, I'm not sure how not having networking would be more 'authentic'. Back in the day I was doing file sharing at home between a 386 and a 486 using LANtastic, a poor-man's Novell Netware. Of course, later linux took over server tasks, but for a glorious moment there I ran a DOS network at home.
Floppies are small. A lot of files don't fit on there... or you need to use rar and split it up on multiples. They're also not reliable. It's just a pain.

Yes. It's harder! Most sane people would do what you suggest, but I like the native integration. Works as Mr. Gates intented.
man i cant tell you how hyped i am to watch this rn i have been waiting
Alternatively, one could use FTP...
Right he doesnt even have to leave dos just grab the packet driver for the network card load the com file into 0x60 and bootup ftpsrv which comes with mtcp

Well samba? is more convenient once you get it to work....
Thank you. Finally answered the question since 2000 and XP times how to share files with 98 machines :) Network logon...

That Dolch looks sweet! Never seen one before. Thanks for the video!
We want these damaged bios images !! Please Marc, they are right there.

Hi Marc I'm really loving all your computer stuff adventures. Greetings from The Netherlands
I just find this video while browsing Shared Printer.... Can we do this for Printer too?
nope, that unofficial service pack always messed up the UI of my windows 98 install. only ever fixed by a re-install.

Thanks for your comments. I certainly took the more difficult road. No problems with the keyboards, soft as silk.
I wonder what Debian strech with mate would act on the dolch pc

yeah I was thinking this. But he likes hard. Let's not ruin it for him

“HFS ~ Http File Server” seems to work on Win 98. It’s just a single portable exe file.
I know it's a old video just you can enable smb 1.0 in modern windows , my windows 10 can talk with windows 98 and 3.1 natively without any update , just need to enable a windows function

server smb 1.0
work perfectly with my mahcine between windows 10 and windows 3.11
Thanks I will try it!

Win 95 startup sound???

Isn't this a problem with later versions of samba which do not allow network discovery anymore?
This sadly doesn’t work for me. I’m running windows 98, not windows 98 Second edition which the program your using was made for.
Install a FTP server on the Win98 machine and on your main machine, so you can access it and at home it can access your main modern computer
Why not set up an FTP server?

Awesome!
Thanks for sharing. 😉👍
Awesome ! Does it work in windows 10 also?
I don't know. It should, but I did not try.
lan man , regedit , net start , net view , net use
Why do all this for just filesharing? :D
It's quite a pain having to move the stuff on that machine with floppies and things like that. This is really worth it if you use the win98 machine a lot.
in less than 4 reboots!
One could also use EtherDFS to network old DOS machines (even 808x) to modern Linux, without config hassle, super low-level. etherdfs.sourceforge.net/
Dukto will copy from Win to Win, Win to Linux, ...
Seems like a USB floppy drive on the Win7 machine would be easier, and more authentic to the vintage vibe. i.e. sneakernet

That and they're also very slow.
Why are you messing with all this windows nonsense? Just use FTP. You can even mount FTP as a directory...
Any reason to not run freedos?
